If you use a 3.5 tonne van as the base for your camper van conversion, you only have a small payload available to cope with all the stuff you're going to fit.

Hi Ben, Dee here. We've just sat and watched the video and I wanted to say thank you; not just the mention, but also for helping to educate others in the VanLife community. Ben; fabulous and truthful vid there. I’ve seen (as I’m sure you have!) other KZfaq ‘stars’ that are giving out incredible misinformation on this subject - it’s a real shame you’ve not got the 35k subscribers that they have. Watching the others and reading the comments from their fan base is terrifying; ‘well said’, ‘I’m putting a lift kit on mine now because you say it’s ok’ and their own ridiculous points that include ‘your brakes are rated at 7T because you can tow a 3.5T trailer’ 😳. It beggars belief and I hope you now get a much bigger following - you’ve nailed this one. Thank you.

Thanks for your comments and your support. It really is incredible that people seem to be happy to take the risk of burying their heads in the sand with this one. Maybe we need to see a couple of high profile prosecutions to help people understand the risk they're taking!

Hi Ben - thanks for the informative and thoughtful video. I dive a 5T Sprinter camper conversion done by Airstream. I've had it weighted at each corner after I upgraded the battery and inverter/charger. I was happy to know my modifications did not exceed any weight limits. Here in USA we don't have the strict requirements and enforcement on weight as you do in UK. But I always encourage my fellow owners that it is still a good idea to stay within weight limits for safety.

Great video. In my country it's pretty the same, B driver licence is good for up to 3500kg, but we don't have C1, just plain C, and it is needed to have classes and make test in a lorry for that. They have an exception for motor homes allowing B class to drive motorhomes up to 6 tons, but I would need C to be able to drive it legally while conversion is in the way. Building a van is a long-term goal for me, around 10 years in the future, but I'm already doing the math to know how much I will spend on that and what I wil need. From my calculations it's pratically impossible to build a motor home over a LWB Sprinter (14m²) without exceeding 3500kg. It's pretty heavy even empty, lefting only 1062kg for everything. I will probably try a 13m³ Fiat Ducato (less space to fill with furniture and 1308kg available for transformation), and use my model airplane builder ninja powers to try to keep it really light. In this case I will need to have CoG low and well balanced between front and back axle, as it is a FWD van and there will be lots of slopes in the path.

Hi, When you got your van Weighed did it include yourself? Also you must remember any passengers. It sounds like you may have to run with empty water tanks. Nice video many thanks Richard

Hi, thanks for watching. Yes all the tanks were full and I was in it when it was weighed. That should have been the maximum weight at that point, fingers crossed.
