KZfaq phases in these changes for different users at different times. I've already been phased out of this, and almost never get videos that are sub-1k views unless it's a channel I'm subscribed to now, so this'll probably be gone completely within a year. But who knows what stupid thing they'll do next in that time. In the long term, there's no winning for any of us.

Pretty sure YT is pocketing the money from ads played on demonetized content
@covahredro8370

They are and always have been doing that. Also they've already paid by the advertisers without the views. The whole Ad revenue thing was simply about suckering creators in and keeping them from going to any competition at the time. Allowing them to create a large enough Monopoly on content, they could then start to dictate and openly push and enforce "The Message".

Unless you get monetisation claimed by multiple claiments, YT has been known to run ads on demonetised content. Also yes YT policy states they take it all with no way to claim it back if this state changes unless it's claimed by a third party.

On the phone app it always now makes the keyboard lockup and you either wait a good minute or tap the voice to text cancel it for it to unlock. Even then the more you comment(like only two or three times)the worse this gets, to the point it no longer works and you can't comment anymore for few hours or more. I also know it's not the keyboard app either, as it functions fully on every single application bar this one. Then again no one will probably even see this comment, given how bad its gotten.

"Is KZfaq stealing from its creators??" Absolutely. There's hoardes of times when its even blatantly and openly done. Videos gets demonitized, but ads are still shown on them. Heck, CHANNELS gets permanently demonitized, but their videos STILL include ads. Doesn't get much more theft than that. And the reasons... Are often insane. People have literally got demonitized for playing music THEY COMPOSED in a video, for claimed copyright violations. And that's not even rare, that happens to LOTS of people.

I hate the way KZfaq is run, I absolutely don't trust the company and do believe they _are_ stealing from the creators. But. That said, I believe there are no free lunches. If KZfaq is hosting your videos and showing them to anyone and you're not paying them to do so then it seems clear to me they're morally correct to slap their ads on it and taking the money. Or am I wrong somewhere in this line of thinking? Personally I hate ads so much I think they should be banned but I also think "free" services should be banned. Facebook, KZfaq, what have you, they should all be forced to bill their users _fully_ to cover the cost of the services rendered. It should cost us something to post these messages. Only by seeing the real costs could we regulate our usage of these systems to a sane level and only by forcing the companies to take us as customers instead of cattle could we force the companies to _treat_ us as customers. Anyone trying to put up a "free" service should be served a sentence of crimes against humanity.

All I can think of is 2 things.1. For sites to have 230 protection, they can not edit, ban or moderate legal content. Give users the tools to block out what they do not want to see. 2. This would force a separation of ad networks and content sites, so ad networks can choose content by keywords and content. Thus giving creators an almost equal footing with the content site itself.

Not gonna happen, as their masters want full control over the narrative. Most of what seems contrary to that is merely controlled opposition. And by that I don't mean working for them, I mean they still push enough of "The Message" or angle or distraction that they're permitted to remain. Even Shad falls into this category on many things.

Nailed it Shad. If they can demonetize for what ever reason and promote small non partnered channels it’s a revenue grab plain and simple. If I can sell to advertiser that their ad will be seen 500 000 times why send that to a big partner and split the fee when they can farm that over 200 unpartnered unknowns and reap 100% ad revenue. Sly greed.

On the main page of youtube. I have two videos for generation zero with about 200 views (edit: This is out of the first 8 videos recommended to me). The thing is, i don't watch generation zero videos. I have been seeing so many videos on my main page for videos with anywhere from 5 to 400 views. I clicked on one the other day cause it had an interesting title and thumbnail, but when i started watching it. The first thing i said was no and clicked off, because the editing and sound were horrible. The sound was crackling and sounded like he was talking through a pringles can. I have seen many videos with absolute poor quality. I completely agree with you shad with how youtube has changed and not for the better.

"I have seen many videos with absolute poor quality" You watched a lot of adverts per minute of uploaded content, and the quality was not bad enough to make you go to a different platform.

A benefit of recommending bad monetised videos is that people watch less of the video after the adverts, so they watch more adverts per minute. I noticed the low-view-count recommendations starting a few months ago. There is one recommended below this video with 3 views in 7 hours.

As an underdog KZfaqr, I appreciate the recent boost to my un-monetizable channel and low-tier content... but not like this. I've spotted the dirty tricks youtube are playing, not just with these poorly matched recommendations, but also with false-flagging and demonetizing legit content of reputed content creators for baseless reasons. It's dirty. I'm considering switching platforms for my content, going forward (once my health catches up with my ambitions again). Integrity is important to me.

You guys raised some really good points but there is one key part of the puzzle I think you're missing, the reason why the financial aspect of this doesn't make sense it because it's not about the money. Every election season in the US the platforms clamp down hard on content that they don't like, so I think that they're willing to bleed money for a little bit if it gets them an edge politically.

They make recommendations based on X - channels adjust to X, viewers adjust to X. then they change to Y, without meaningfully declaring the change. Channels and viewers feel screwed as they get none of what they want.

I am apparently part of Google's/KZfaq's test group. I always get hit with the changes first. When KZfaq started the whole anit-adblockers thing I was among the first to get hit the notifications; it took about a month before my sister get hit with it. Then, a couple weeks ago the entire user interface changed, with the comments on videos being moved to the margin, where the recommended videos were, and the recommended videos being moved to where the comments are. That was terrible, it practically hid the video/channel information, and made liking and subscribing difficult because they were hard to find in that jumbled space(it was all crammed together). They reverted it, it is back to "normal" now. And as to the recommendations... Yeah, the recommendation algorithm seems a bit psychotic at the moment. That said, I am seeing A LOT of new creators in my recommendations. Which is not altogether a bad thing. But for me it is, because I like what I like, I know what I like, and don't want/need anything else.

I'll have to keep an eye out on my recommended feed. I've noticed "new" videos that have subjects that don't interest me, but I never paid attention to the number of views for them. Scanning through my feed now, and all the recommended videos are over 5k or 10k views (which are decent for some of the smaller channels I watch).

I used to pay for a few of my videos to be seen, but i did it more out of curiosity to test the ability to advertise. buuuuut it didnt make a huge difference since i didnt spend a lot or use great videos for it.

A company that will demonetize videos or whole channels for no apparent reason then even if it is overturned will pocket any money made during the period of demonetization instead of making sure it is received by the content creator. Clearly not stealing from people using the platform at all

Can't say I've seen any of these problems with my reccs (the ones on this vid for example are fine), but there might be some reasons for this: I use an ad blocker (ever since the number of ads went through the roof during lockdown), I use a browser extension that restores YT Dislikes seamlessly, and I only ever browse from my subs page, not from "For You" or the Home page. YT might therefore have decided that spamming me with 100% ad-revenue vids from non-partnered channels is pointless since a) I'm less likely to click on the vid because I can see the dislikes and b) I won't see the ads anyway.

I have a small channel in Spanish (20K subscribers) and I have noticed the same thing: 0 growth in the last few months; and, as a user, it sometimes recommend videos to me with less than 10 views. I didn't find any specific bias in these: neither ideological nor regarding the demographics of the person who created the video. It seems completely random.

As a software developer, I know how easy it is to flag videos that contain things Google doesn't like (such as criticizing KZfaq or any other political thing they care about). And a lot of creators like you have a different channel for their more controversial topics, but what they don't seem to realize is that it is also very easy to predict what videos are likely to trigger people to watch those videos. One of the easiest and most clear ways is that if KZfaq recommends lots of videos from creator A and users enjoy those videos, users will look for more videos of creator A and find the videos Google doesn't want you to see (even if it is on a different channel) even if they aren't reccomended. So the best way for Google to prevent users from watching those videos is to limit the exposure of those videos. This works across channels and even with different creators (if you watch a lot of videos from creator B and creator B mentions creator A (or someone in the comments does) you're likely to check it out).

Single data point here, but I've been paying attention to this since you started to bring it up: You are in my recommendations all the time. I very rarely see a recommendation that isn't a channel I'm subscribed to, or related to something I've watched recently. Not saying this isn't happening to some people, only that it's not happening to me. So I think whatever is going on is a multi-factor equation.
