Thanks. I live off-grid, and run my well water through my Berkey first, then a Pur filter, then the ZeroWater filter. I still have a problem with hard water and mineral scale build up in my coffee pot and tea kettle. Is there a gravity fed water softener/filtration system that could help with this? Also, my well is hand pumped, and I have very limited solar electric that my DC freezer and refrigerator pretty much use up, so a pressurized water system is not an option right now.

@waterfilterguru

Slow filtration rate indicates the filter is reaching or has reached its capacity, which means it needs to be replaced. If the filter reaches capacity quickly, that means there are more and/or higher concentrations of contaminants present in the water. I'd be careful with ZeroWater - their filters have a notoriously low capacity, meaning highly contaminated water will cause them to need to be replaced more often. You may want to consider pre-filtering the water with the PUR before the ZeroWater, this will help the more expensive ZeroWater filters last longer

I've used zerowater for about 5 years and have been happy until the last few months. I use the tds meter after every filter change and I went through six filters in the last few weeks trying to find one that got the water under 60 ppm. Most were still in the 100s. I contacted zerowater and they didn't ask for a sku or batch number. They sent me a new filter that was also bad. I've finally given up on them. I'm so frustrated because I really thought I'd found a good system. Other than the awful sour taste when the filter needs to be changed, I've had no problems until now. I've been researching for a few weeks and have my options narrowed down to aquatru, aquasana, or clearly filtered. Thanks for your videos! They've been extremely helpful in my search!

@waterfilterguru yes, it was strange and disappointing. I read through some recent Amazon reviews and saw some ppl had the same issue. Maybe a bad batch of filters? I have so many questions that I don't know where to start! I'm deep down the rabbit hole of researching filters. I suppose my biggest concern right now is deciding how important remineralizing my water is. I eat a pretty balanced diet and take a magnesium supplement already. Thoughts? Also, have you done a review of the Aquasana water machine? That is the one I'm leaning towards bc of cost.
@Lightendog

I'm going to do my own tests with zerowater including looking at it under a microscope......so far the cleanest water is distilled water. I have been using my electric distiller for about 7 years now. Most people don't so the ppm's on different units so so zerowater really got me wondering. I'll be doing a video on it along with other things I have tested.
@waterfilterguru
@waterfilterguru 5 ай бұрын
@@Lightendog we'll be lab testing ours here pretty soon too, so stay tuned for those results! Also, PPM is a unit of measurement - not a contaminant. I think folks confuse this because the TDS meter provides readings in PPM. Keep in mind a TDS reading alone does not provide much insight into the quality of the water or what contaminants are present, as it does not distinguish what those dissolved solids are. For example, water with high healthy mineral content would have a high TDS reading in PPM.

@waterfilterguru
@waterfilterguru 4 ай бұрын
6 weeks is about standard for ZeroWater. The fishy smell comes from the ion exchange resin when it's starting to reach capacity. ZeroWater is known for it because their filters are so large and have such a large amount of resin contained within. That said, any filter that uses ion exchange resin that is not regenerated will eventually develop the same smell issue.

I wonder why zero water (and others) don't have opaque or at least a sleeve that prevents light from hitting the pitcher water.. Once they filter out the chlorine, nothing is in the way of bacterial proliferation so if your pitcher sits outside your fridge you may find that your water goes stale/bad after 48hrs. Add to that the filter would be bathing in this, nothing prevents the bacteria from also making the inside of the filter their home possibly corrupting your future X gallons of water... Also same advice when prefiltering, to realise that the 'stage 1' filter will also go bad quick and need replacement regularly. It would be good to monitor this. I'm very tempted to get the zero water but it seems all systems got gotchas... The reverse osmosis seem the best but are out of my budget. The TDS of my tap water is around 50 so I tend to boil the water for the kids which increases the TDS while eliminating bacteria, etc.. Seems there are no straightforward solutions :p

@Airbag888

@@waterfilterguruRight. What I meant was that given enough time the bacteria would end up inside the filter element. In between the plastic outer casing and the last stages of the filter. THAT would be hardest to get rid of. That's why I'd love to get more data on 1. Evolution of bacterial content (as well as filtering of other things) as we approach the amount of gallons recommended (basically see what gets worse faster - the tds meter will not show this) 2. The speed at which bacteria forms within the filtered water 3. The presence of bacteria inside the filter (described above) after letting the water stand for 48hrs without consuming it. I think a sensible thing to do would be to always wrap your pitcher in something opaque to decrease sunlight (which worsens bacteria proliferation) Also remove the filter and keep in your fridge if you're away for a few days as well as empty the pitcher

It depends on the pitcher. Theoretically ZeroWater will reduce HAAs because it uses an activated carbon component to the filter media, but it has not been tested for HAA reduction

How much effort is it to replace the filter? Do yoi need to soak for 10 minutes and flush through 3 lots of water before you can use it? It takes my Brita several days of constant use before the TDS value drops and it onlt evwr drops from around 320ppm to around 280ppm. Granted perhaps not everything it's removing is contributing to TDS levels.
@waterfilterguru
@waterfilterguru 3 ай бұрын
Filter replacement is easy. Not soaking required, simply screw the filter in place. Brita is not capable of reducing TDS, so that is not a parameter you should measure to judge its performance by.

We have to use Zero Water because we have well water and it's high in calcium which is bad for your heart. It's the only one that removes calcium. A good way to tell if you're getting too much calcium is your hair and fingernails start growing faster than normal.

Considering most bottled water is filtered Tap Water, I have decided to filter my own water and not pay a premium or have a shit ton of plastic bottles left over. Zero Water filters give that great bottled water taste at a fraction of the cost., And you dont have bags and bags of plastic bottles.

Water with a zero TDS reading is not recommended for long-term consumption, this is because it is devoid of all mineral content. It is essentially the same as distilled, or 'pure' water. While those terms may sound good and cool - they're not

We recently switched from Berkey to WaterDrop thanks to this amazingly honest, accurate, and competent review channel. It’s only been a week, but IDK how we went without this system. No more fluoride, convenient, and the water truly tastes great. Hopefully the filters and unit hold up because this is a treat versus the chore of using Berkey. No offense, Berkey. If we were without power and somewhere without fluoride/city water, our gravity fed would do well. Especially with 6,000 gallon filters. Our water is simply too polluted, and filling up a slow drip canister which takes up counter space isn’t convenient.

The filters suck! Fishy and taste and smell after only a month and a half. And not all filters are doing this! Way too expensive to replace once a month. In Canada there costing us 50 dollars for 4. It's ridiculous. Want a water filter system to get rid of chlorine and fluoride!!! These two are dumbing us down and slowly killing us!

The fishy odor indicates that ion exchange resin in the filters has reached capacity (it's "full" of contaminants) and that they should be replaced. ZeroWater filters have a much lower capacity than other systems, which is in turn lowers the filter lifespan and makes them expensive to maintain, which is one of their biggest setbacks. Have you considered a reverse osmosis system instead? If you're renting and can't install a permanent solution, check out the AquaTru bit.ly/3w7nsB5 If you can install permanently install a system, check out the Waterdrop G series waterdropus.pxf.io/mg6A5a or Cloud RO cloud-water-filters.sjv.io/jrOrdP

While the ZeroWater does a 'relatively' decent job and the outcome flavor isn't the best, I'm actually astonished at how poor the filter works towards the end of its life and something YOU critically failed to mentioned! It has an ABSOLUTELY repugnant, repulsive DEAD FISH smell that emanates from the (filtered) water once the filter is depleted. It's beyond nauseating and disgusting! You have to literally use vinegar and dish soap to thoroughly disinfect the smell out of it and as an example, your coffee machine. This is THE ONLY part about this companies' product that is constantly making me search for another vendor and product line. The smell these put out at EOL is absolutely the worst on the human nose.

The carbon block media in the filter element is capable of filtering out microplastics from the influent water. I think the better question to ask is, although microplastics are filtered from the influent water, is the pitcher itself adding microplastics back into the filtered water? 🤔 Great idea for a project

I’ve been using a zerowater pitcher since then. Do you have an opinion on the Santevia Gravity Water System? I’m interested in this one because it adds some minerals back.
