Will definitely read this series. I love historical romance spy books.

Oh, did Bridgeton have an impact on publishing? It’s not my corner of literature, so I wasn’t paying attention, but this sounds like a rip off of that?

I wouldn’t really say so (other than more comps, though Julia Quinn has been a long established author blurb on especially Avon historicals); this is pretty standard historical romance-as is Bridgerton. If anything, I’ve been shocked that Bridgerton hasn’t ushered in *more* of a historical romance renaissance

@@bookishmelody Do the Bridgerton books not tweak the race and sexuality of its characters the way that the series does making them period inaccurate, but aligning more with contemporary conceptions?

No, the Bridgerton books are very much products of late 90s early 2000s romance

@@bookishmelody Oh! Interesting! I assumed they came to prominence because they played fast and loose with race, sexuality, body size and things like that, making them slightly progressive in a transgressive way. Did the author know what they were going to do to her books and approve, or was she just happy to take the money and smile and say thank you? At least now I never feel I need to read them.
