The best part of that scene for me is that Garp did it because he heard Ace say that he wanted to live, when Garp knows that kid Ace was never sure if he deserved to.

@@mr.shorty7310 Everyone's power was toned down a lot during the war, or rather everyone is way stronger in the new world. Garp could have destroyed the island, sengoku too, hell if whitebeard was alone, or just him and the commanders he could have done way more damage to the island and actually use the conqueror's. But the aim was to save ace and not cause destruction, in fact the war and the sheer number of people was detrimental to almost every "strong" character

Garp stands in front of Luffy but in reality he wants Luffy to succeed in rescuing Ace. That's why he gave that speech to Luffy to remind him that he needs to do his best even against Garp himself. Garp did not waver just because it is Luffy infront of him but also because deep inside he wants Ace to be rescued.

The gravity of Luffy's presence on the front line and the fact that Whitebeard is backing him is insane. This is a 17 year old who's been active on the seas for maybe a few months at most and he's THE front liner of this war right along side the EMPEROR Whitebeard. That and his conqueror's haki catapults his threat value to the world government to INSANE heights.

Garp stood in the way to show Luffy that he can't expect to keep going this route without being willing to go all out. He took a dive because Luffy was willing to fight. I know I'm probably reading too much into it, but part of me thinks Garp seeing Ace on that scaffold and Luffy being here at risk of death is stressing him the hell out because with damn near every important Navyman there (particularly Sengoku), he can't fudge his way out and save him this time. He needs to be sure, in this moment, that Luffy will _not_ stop!

@iShinobi Whitebeard couldn't use haki because, as what I've read somewhere, he was sick. so he could only use basic haki like materializing akainu and stopping him from his logia capabilities. Remember when whitebeard and shanks met, whitebeard was on lots of IV fluids.

there's also the interpretation that knocking people out is just one application of CoC and whitebeard specialized in more of a buff-effect amplifying his allies abilities. it might be that since whitebeard had no aspiration of claiming the pirate king title the CoC was kind of stuck on "mid" level. He was obviously more powerful than luffy but less ambitious if that makes sense
