Islam in Suriname is a religion followed by 13.5% of the country's population or around 500 thousand people. In his article entitled Surinamese Muslims in a Plural Society, R S Chickrie said that the Muslim community in Suriname is relatively active economically and politically.
Many people speculate that Muslims first came to Suriname as slaves from West Africa and then converted to Christianity over time, although there is little evidence to support this speculation. The ancestors of the Muslim population actually came to this country as indentured laborers from South Asia and Indonesia, who are currently the descendants of the majority of Muslims in Suriname
