In this video I wanted to compare two different takes on peated Single Malt Scotch Whisky made with Islay Barley. First up is one of my favourite whiskies of the last year, the 100% Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky 10th Edition from the Kilchoman Distillery on Islay. In June I was lucky enough to get to visit Islay's farm distillery and enjoyed an opportunity to see the fields where they grow their barley. The Kilchoman 100% Islay 10th Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky is matured in a combination of 39 Ex-Bourbon barrels and 2 Oloroso Sherry Butts. It is bottled at 50% ABV, is non-chill filtered and natural colour. The whisky I am comparing it too in this showdown comes from what is most likely my favourite distillery on Islay, the Bruichladdich Distillery. The whisky challenging the Kilchoman 100% Islay for Islay Barley supremacy is Bruichladdich's Port Charlotte Islay Barley 2012 Heavily Peated Single Malt Scotch Whisky. This whisky is 6 years old, bottled at 50% ABV, is non-chill filtered and natural colour ad age in a combination of 1st fill ex-bourbon and 2nd fill wine casks. There are some major differences between these but potentially the largest is that the Kilchoman 100% Islay, unlike their other releases, is only peated to a level of 20PPM where the Port Charlotte has a predistillation Phenol level of 40PPM. Which Islay Barley Scotch whisky will come out on top in this battle? Watch along to find out! Thanks a always for watching. Cheers.

I'm so glad to have company in loving this stuff John! It deserves to get noticed! Here's hoping the 100% ex-bourbon 13th edition you told me about is just as good as earlier ones. Cheers buddy🥃

Nice head to head. Just got a bottle of the 100% Islay 13th here in Canada. Looking forward to cracking it tonight!

Wild, I randomly compared regular PC10 and Kilchoman 100% 13th last night. Hard to find the Islay Barleys near me, but regular old PC10 was the winner last night.

I could certainly see the PC10 showing well in the comparison against the 100% Islay, especially if you are wanting more peat smoke. PC10 is a great whisky and one of my favourites. I feel like it would show off as bigger, bolder and heavier peated. Probably a bit more mature too. That said the 100% islay is doing something different with it's tropical fruits and lighter peat profile. The PC Islay Barley felt closer to the Kilchoman than the regular PC10 to me. Great whiskies all around. Cheers 🥃

Great video, and a fun comparison. I can't choose between these, I love them both. What is also quite fun is comparing the different years of the 100% Islay. Its £70 to £80 here so buying it each year doesn't bankrupt you!

Thanks Pete! Glad you enjoy both! They really really are a ton of fun to compare across years, which is probably why I enjoy them so much. And as you suggest the price is quite fair for the presentation. Cheers 🥃

Nice comparison! I agree both are great pours. I’ve had bottles of the PCIB 2012 and 2013 (I preferred the 2013) as well as the 11th and 12th editions of the Kilchoman. If I had to pick just one it would be the Kilchoman. I love what they are doing at Kilchoman!

Thanks Kevin! I have an unopened PCIB 2013 so I'll have to do a comparison in the future, but it's interesting hearing that you preferred the 2013. But overall I am with you, these Kilchoman Islay Barley bottlings are simply special. Looking forward to even more like that from Kilchoman. Cheers man 🥃

Hey Rob! If/when you get the Islay Barley I hope you love it as much as I do. The 10th and 12th editions were phenomenal. I love my PC Islay Barley's, but this Kilchoman just does it for me. Cheers Rob 🥃

I haven't tried every release that's makes this head to head relevant but I do agree with your pick. These distileries are both playing at the top of the game. Kilchoman 's smaller ,younger stature gives nothing away from the quality. I like the core range and the single casks are great, albeit a bit pricey, but I am loving the US releases which are very reasonable. I don't really love this PC 2012 Islay Barley. My jam was an older release of the Scottish Barley. Luckily I have a backup. I'm loving the Cask exploration series, mainly because they're cask strength and 1/3 the price of Octomores. It's impossible to chase every Islay release. Especially when Ardbeg is the king. The king may be surrounded by fools but still the king as long as the core range is steady. A lighter peated fruity Kilchoman malt does sound like a perfect dram

Jack, those cask exploration series bottlings are dynamite as you suggest, and a great value proposition compared to Octomore. You are dead on. I really loved an old PC Scottish Barley too, I wonder if it's the same one. Like you, I adore both of these disitlleries and their ethic. The Kilchoman Islay Barley is just becoming one of my absolute favourites. And yet as you mention, can you dethrone Ardbeg's core range? Doubtful. Maybe I should arrange an Oogie vs Sanaig blind tasting. Hmm... either way, Cheers Jack 🥃

@@whiskyonthewestcoast it's old, it was a few years in the bottle when Erik Wait reviewed it about 3 years ago. Did I mention I have a backup? Someday I'll get a Sanaig, enjoying the overpriced Loch Gorm. Not sure if I'll pay for another anytime soon but the PC cask exploration feeds my FOMO.

Huge fangirl here of Kilchoman 100% Islay Single Malt Barley and the Port Charlotte Islay Barley! Big time! I have mulled this over after watching this terrific (as always!) video Matt, while sipping a dram of Lagavulin 16 (yup I adore it!) and I think it's mood dependent! Like you I absolutely love Port Charlotte yet my inclination was to immediately choose Kilchoman! Talk about two amazing expressions! In relaxing and thinking it over I believe it honestly depends on the day, what's on my mind, how pensive I might be, for which expression of the two that I reach for! What a great topic to think about while having some wonderful scotch! I always enjoy your superb videos so much! Hope you have a great weekend! Cheers! :-)

Thanks for the amazing comment as always Christine! With Kilchoman, Port Charlotte and Lagavulin 16 it sounds like it's an all Islay affair! I'd agree with you that mood would be a big part of it. If you want lighter peat and tropical fruits or more heavy peat and forest fruits. I could see a time and place for both of these. How great is it that we get to enjoy such wonderful whisky!? Thanks for watching Christine. Cheers 🥃

I'm with you Matt, really enjoying the Kilchoman Islay Barley right now. Other than the two recent missteps (Loch Gruinart & the 16 YR) this distillery is putting out some credit worthy whiskies. Hard to be the Sanaig for the price that you pay.
@whiskyonthewestcoast
@whiskyonthewestcoast 7 ай бұрын
The Sanaig is absolutely extremely tough to beat price to performance wise. I have followed the low scores for the Loch Gruinart and the acrimony witht he price of the 16 year. Honestly, I'm really curious to try that 16. call it a morbid curiosity haha. Cheers buddy and happy trails 🥃

I was able to sample the 16 in Glasgow last November and it was decent, but not spectacular by any stretch. Certainly not worth what they're charging for it.

Happy New Year! I haven't tried that Kilchoman but I did manage to get a couple of bottles of that Islay Barley 2012 for £55gpb which was a steal. Fantastic whiskey. I get a bit more farmyard funk from it too - think it tops the normal port charlotte 10 at that price too!

Hey Ronan! Huge fan of that farmyard funk quality, sounds like you enjoy it as well. It's one of the reasons i steer towards the Islay Barley over the PC10. PC10 is probably a more technically sound whisky, but the Islay Barley is more interesting. Cheers eh! 🥃

Hi Ronan! I'm a huge fan of that farmyard funk, and it sounds like you are too! It's definitely why i steer towards the Islay Barley as opposed to the PC10. While the 10 is probably more technically perfect than the Islay Barley I found the islay Barley more interesting. Cheers eh! 🥃

Huge fan of 2013 port charlotte islay barley, had many bottles of it and always want more, yet to try kilchomans as I'm a fan of the heavier peat, tho had many machir bay cask 2021 I think and absolutely killer imo

Glad we're both big fans of the PC Islay Barley releases! I will say, most of Kilchoman's releases are heavier peat(50PPM), only the Islay Barley is lower. And I'd agree with you that the Machir Bay Cask Strength is a knockout! Great Whisky. Cheers Spencer 🥃
