The 3.5 oz is the weight of the contents when full. It just happens to also be the weight of the canister empty. You can also use the cheap butane cartridges (tall-narrow) with an adapter. You can get a case of them on Amazon for about $24 for 12 x 8 oz cans. You've only got butane in the backpacking canister that way, but they work fine unless you are doing winter camping.

I dropped off a used canister at my local (GB) recycling centre last week and asked whether these things get reused (ie refilled and sold). The answer was no, they just get recycled (melted) and reformed into new aluminium products. Better than landfill but, still, what a waste of energy! So I’m interested in refilling my own to save waste. I’d still have the big canister to recycle, but I think that’s less wasteful than several mini ones. Thanks for the vid. 😁

Yeah definitely better than the landfill. Glad this was helpful.

I also warm the donor canister in hot water. I refill not just for 1/2 cheaper gas but also avoid tossing out half filled canisters since I like to start out with a full canister. The red MSR canisters come with full weight printed on them so that makes it a little easier and safer to not overfill and they hold an extra 10g.

That is something I like about the msr cans but the black ones are more readily available locally for me. I also try to start on a full can. Thanks for watching 👍

This is a clearly explained and helpful video. Thanks! There's also a clever hack that KrizAkoni posted on KZfaq on how to make it work with even cheaper plain butane in winter temperatures. You run a strip of copper from the side of the canister up to the flame and enough heat gets transferred down to keep the canister and the fuel sufficiently warm to burn successfully. He used a strip of copper flashing but I found copper bands used to make bracelets in jewelry making (about $10 at a local arts & crafts chain store) and it also seems to work well. Check his video to understand what I'm talking about.

Just a thought. You have to keep cooling the can that you are filling. I wonder how it would work to set the bottom can in an ice water bath with some salt in it. Same principle as making home made ice cream. If you are going to fill several canisters it might be worth the trouble.
@JasonOutdoors

That's actually a pretty good idea. Might have to try that next time I refill. 👍

Don't add salt... but the ice water is a good idea. Boyle's Law & Charles Law... This is very similar to how we fill SCUBA tanks. We put the tank in a large tub of cold water. The receiving tank will always heat up as the pressure inside builds, and the expelling tank will always cool down as the pressure drops. Although, we use a compressor for SCUBA tanks, but most people will experience this phenomenon when spraying an aerosol can for prolonged periods. You'll also experience this pressurized heating and cooling of a cylinder on a commercial jetliner as it ascends and descends, cooling off as your airplane climbs, and heating up as your plane comes in for landing. This is why people start to sweat as the plane comes in on final approach, and not because they're stressing out... although, it could be a little of each.

How did you know that you had to stop and freeze it again? Also, what would happen if you didn’t release the pressure and tried using the stove? Great video!
@JasonOutdoors
@JasonOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. You could hear the flow slow down as the canister warned up. If you overfill the canister and then use the stove you should be fine because you'll be using up the extra fuel you put in. The issue with over filling is that as the canister temperature rises.. like being in your pack on a hot day, the pressure will increase and it could cause the can to burst.

Very helpful. Will try it once my can runs dry or I'll go on a long hike. Two questions though: 1) can I mix fuels and cans from different brands? 2) how cold the receiving can should be? Is there any danger in over freezing? Thanks in advance
@JasonOutdoors
@JasonOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I've had no issues mixing brands. In the video I used 2 different ones without problems. There is no freeze warning on the cans I have. I personally don't think you could over freeze it but to error on the safe side I wouldn't leave it in for a real long time. I've had good luck in the 20 minute range.

I wonder if you were to time with a stop watch the total time to fill the empty canister, could the time be used for future refills... This would allow to be filled in one motion rather than the hit and miss method.. Would this work?
@JasonOutdoors
@JasonOutdoors Жыл бұрын
I think the idea is good and it would probably get you close. Temperature would be the big factor if the time would stay the same. I don't fill from empty anymore. I top off my cylinder before each trip, takes about a minute.

Pretty nice. Now if someone would come up with a hose and use two adapters , that would be sweet !!! Could just leave the one you are filling on the scale and could adjust for the added wt of the hanging hose . Yes , I know it would cost more .... bg

That would be great, but each time you did it, wouldn't the amout of weight of the hose and fitting that was registering on the small can change ever so slightly, depending on many factors of angle .... etc.?
@7marmot
@7marmot 3 жыл бұрын
This is what I do. I added an extension hose from aliexpress (in addition to the adapter). One side goes in hot water, the other into an ice bath on the scale. I connect the donor canister first, then briefly open the valve to flush air out of the hose. Then I connect the receiving canister, and use the shunt valve button to flush the air out from between the receiver and the valve. This is out of an abundance of caution, as someone mentioned the potential of rust causing moisture from the air (and I'd rather not have air in the canister anyways). Other considerations, the propane and isobutane will burn off first, leaving n-butane. So over time, refilling may reduce your cold weather performance. Careful you get one with lindal valves on both sides. Shop around, I think I paid $15. www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001552694419.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.3c1d3cfbnijl0l&algo_pvid=d1faf900-130e-4e02-b887-9a72dee8fd0a&algo_exp_id=d1faf900-130e-4e02-b887-9a72dee8fd0a-25
