Unironically I occassionally play Shanxi. Why you ask? Because Yan Xishan is pretty funny and it'd be even more funny if he turns a terrible 2 province nation into an overpowered superstate. Has it ever worked? No. Will I keep trying? Yes. The endless grind must continue, for Yan's sake.

@@UnknownLord711 Yes, the only thing that provides supply in the game (beyond the tiny trickle of local supply and what you can get with aerial supply) is from supply hubs with a railway connection to the capital and ports. You increase the range of a hub with motorisation, you increase the amount of supply a hub provides by upgrading its railway connections. Of course things like weather, commander skills, terrain types and a whole host of other variables affect this as well. It would be nice if railways provided a small amount of supply, not as much as supply hubs of course so that hubs are still important, but enough to make preparing for campaigns in sparse areas slightly less cock-and-ball torture. It would represent unloading supplies from train stations and railheads.

I assume you're talking about Tunganistan, which I believe is in Road To 56 and is led by Ma Zhongying. (EDIT) I looked it up and apparently it's led by Ma Hushan. Both of these people were kind of insane IRL and both Zhongying and Hushan were hated by the entire rest of the Ma Clique (Xibei San Ma in HOI4) after Ma Zhongying disappeared in 1934, Ma Hushan was his successor and controlled roughly the southern half of Xinjiang (Sinkiang in HOI4) province until 1937. I would really recommend reading about this period of time in Xinjiang because it's absolutely crazy.

One of the first nations I played in HOI4 was Shanxi. I can't remember why I thought it was a good idea. I managed to survive against the Japanese, but quit because I couldn't figure out how to push. I think I had over 100 crappy default template divisions by the end of the game.

I have played shanxi before. I used the artillery genius as the main strategy. This was back when you had to have more than 50% of the divisions be artillery to actually get the bonus. Using border conflicts I took over ~75% of China. I don't remember what trick I used to stay out of the war, but after I took the last chinese state in a border conflict, Japan manually justified on me. I having spent the whole game memeing wasn't prepared and just said F it, and started a new game.

I actually played as Shanxi and got lucky because the Japanese got tied up by Manchuria so I managed to kill off Mao and then usurped the position of China from Kai-Shek. It was an interesting challenge for what is normally a formality amongst the Chinese Warlords.
