I think the Austrian-Hungarians actually enabled the Germans during WW1 to start their tank-production. Because the Germans got the idea for the tank tracks from them. They needed to invite the Hungarian driver to teach them to drive with that, if I am not entirely wrong here.

Hungary was the official successor to the Austro-Hungarian Empire after World War I, which I assume is why the path to restore it is is their focus tree, if anyone's wondering.

What I find surprising, is if you're playing the Germans and Austria-Hungary forms, their AI is actually really useful (by hoi4 AI standards). They do naval invasions, make plenty of units, and go all over the world. Much better than the Hungarian AI. It's strange that each country has a "personality" in this game.

If you look through the history of Austria and Hungary after WW1 you’ll see that the reformation of Austro Hungary was heavily Hungarian based and in fact the Kingdom of Hungary is the remains of the old Empires government so realistically the only true reformation effort would be Hungarian based as the Austrian government draws legitimacy from the fall of the old empire.

Iraq is pretty decent in Road to 56 The fascist tree is fun and gets you a lot of manpower to face the colonial powers so I recommend you play R56 instead of vanilla just so that you don't jump out of that window

On the RNG matter of the decisions, you can actually manipulate that to a fair degree with things like what your relations are with a country, by exerting diplomatic pressure via a spy, military power and at times the right timing. For instance Czechoslovakia would be more likely to give in if the Germans had claims on their land and you're exerting diplomatic pressure. So to an extent there's an extra behind the scenes arena one can some what manipulate as well now, which is useful for some countries.

The Czech decision is actually weighted by their opinion of you, same with Austria, so if you do the reintegrate the railroads focus (second industrial tree focus) and then use improve opinion you can pretty much guarantee both will accept full annexation from you. Still a tiny bit of RNG to it but the higher the opinion the more likely they just accept annex.

a reworking of the focus tree would be cool where getting back together isn't based so much on luck, it's always a reload when i try to join together with austria or gain land.

I think the reason why Hungary forms it and not Austria is beacause the leader of Hungary, Miklos Horthy, was an Austro-Hungarian admiral, while Austria at this point had cut basically all political ties with the former imperial crown.

For Italy, I recommend LVN: La Vittoria è Nostra! Massive fascist branch ending in either rebuilding the Roman Empire or forming a proper Italian Empire, anti-fascist branch allowing for either democratic or monarchist Italy and an entirely separate tree for Communist Italy. Also colonial Libya and East Africa trees, but those are... eh, they're only really there to make Italy's life easier.
