This physics video tutorial provides a basic introduction into isothermal processes. It explains how to calculate the work performed by a gas during an isothermal expansion and how to determine the heat energy transferred as well as the change in the internal energy of the system. This video explains how to use calculus to derive the formula to calculate the work done by a gas during an isothermal expansion. This video also includes the PV diagram of an isothermal process as well as plenty of examples and practice problems.

every single time, I come here panicking cause I don't understand what the question is asking off me, and every single time you never fail to be exactly what I need. Honestly I probably owe so much of my degree to these videos. This video is like 4 years old now so I doubt you'll see this, but I'm genuinely so glad for your work and effort. Thank you so much.

Exactly true;that work is supposed to be negative since it is being done by the system which would be the opposite of it was the sorrounding performing work against the system!

i think its because the ratio of [Vf/Vo] will be the same even if they are converted into m^3 since the liters would have been divided by 1000 to convert it to m^3, so it would have cancelled out, so it doesnt matter if they are in liters or meter cube. but the 8.314 constant is a must for calculating joules so that is indispensable, but that's just what i speculate

According to the first law of thermodynamics, Q=dU+W Q=Heat supply on the system or heat lost from the system dU= Change of internal energy (Increase or decrease) W=Work done by the system or done on the system Internal energy depends on the change in temperature and work done depends on the change in volume... That means if we increase the volume of a system and with the increment of volume temperature falls that means temperature changes... So, here two things occur, work done and internal energy change... Now come to the question, in the above problem, temperature is constant..As temperature changes, internal energy changes... No temperature change, so internal energy change zero... As volume changes, so here only work done... Q=dU+W Q=0+W Q=W=nRT[ln(V2)-ln(V1)] Thank you...

does it matter that the pressure is not constant? W=integral(PdV) so wouldnt W=nRTln(v2/v1) only hold true if the P could be pulled out of the integral?

In 2nd question gas is being compressed meaning work is being done on gas so W should be positive right? and in 1st question gas is doing the work so W should be negative. Can anyone explain me why? Or is he referring surrounding for symbols and not system. @ThrOrganicChemistryTutor

I don't see how you can find that W=Integral(P*dV) where P is Constant. And then when you find W=nRTln(Vf/Vi), you assume P is not constant and substitute in Pi/Pf. If P is constant, how can you substitute in Pi/Pf?
