Hey 👋🏻 So I know that you were in the family first, but I still want to welcome you to Coach Greg’s family! I am a fitness and nutrition coach. Fitness saved my life and now I’m passionate about learning as much as I can about it, hence why I follow the doc. However, I just got into nursing school. We have to learn a lot of smart people stuff over the next few years soooo I thought it would benefit me to follow Coach Greg’s cousin as well 🤷🏼♀️Hope you keep posting more than last time.

Hey, here from coach Greg. Could you do a video on why doping testers need to know specific compounds (e.g. anabolic steroids) to look for? I remember the Balco bust in the 2000s where athletes were recklessly using THG because it was unknown to authorities. Why could a tester not take some (animal?) androgen receptors in vitro and see what molecules from an athlete's blood binds to it? Wouldn't that allow detection of any novel compounds being used which could then be identified by NMR? (Forgive me if my terminology is wrong, it's been a while since I studied this stuff!)

In the description of the mass-spectrometer, you meant that the 12CO or 13CO molecules are first ionised before being bent by the magnetic field.

Exactly. With mass spectrometry, you are always dealing with charged ions, which are created in the ions source. There is another video that goes into more detail on how a magnetic sector mass spectrometer works, and another on electron ionization, in case you want to learn more.

That's actually a different strategy. Still based on careful measurements of isotopes, but it needs even more specialized equipment called an Accelerator Mass Spectrometer. They actually take advantage of the nuclear fallout released from all the bomb testing in the middle of the 20th century to calibrate the age of samples. For older samples like fossils, they need to look at longer lived isotopes (radioactive carbon 14 decays too quickly). Thanks for your question!
