I disagree. According to recent polls, 70% of the US citizens support Israel 100%. That means only 30% are affected by the propaganda. This is consistent with the history I've read. The German National Socialists before WW2 (I won't say their real name since youtube will hate me for it) only captured 30% of the German vote. If you read the history of WW2 you'll get a good idea why this allowed the socialists to come to power.. but the original point stands.. only a third of any population normally responds to propaganda in a way that is consistent with what the propagandists want. Most people can see through it. And Americans, God bless them, exemplify this point at this moment in history.

Ukraine was very much told from the beginning "Don't win too much". Weapons given to them had their ranges shortened. Thank you UK for crossing the line with Challenger tanks and Storm Shadow. They've been prevented from attacking into Russia with US supplied weapons. How can you not attack troops massing on your border when you are already at war? They've been told to not hit Russian oil infrastructure after sanctions were ineffective and largely bypassed. They've been supplied just enough to prolong the war without letting them succeed in evicting Russian invaders. Would the summer offensive have been successful if Ukraine had ATACMs? We'll never know, but they've been hitting Russian airfields, boats, and training and supply depots hard since they got the few they were supplied.

the ones winning are Arms Contractors. $100 Billion in additional spending to the already $850 Billion annual spending. Where are the people worried about the national Debt? Eisenhower explained the Military Industrial Complex in his 1961 speech. Orwell explained it in 1984 - the war is not meant to be won, its meant to be endless. It's profitable, that's what matters.

@@sarge5000 War is profitable, therefore war is a good result. It doesn't matter who wins or loses. The US just spent Trillions fighting in Afghanistan. We lost. But profits were high. They asked Joe Biden about US Citizens getting health care his answer is 'How you gonna pay for it'. But it's a great idea to add $100 Billion in debt to help other countries spend for their wars? Nobody even pauses to think about adding $100 Billion to the debt - see Eisenhower's 1961 speech. Israel has universal healthcare, how about they take away their citizens healthcare to pay for some weapons? We are sending billions to Ukraine to keep their pension and health care payments (its not just weapons). Adding to the debt is great for a country we have no treaty obligation to and yet we call American citizens who paid for the social security system 'entitled leeches' Its beyond insane.

The uncomfortable truth is that 50+ countries are being out produced by one that is spending less than 1/5th of what we spend on ours. A country that has a better economic forecast than most EU nations ,winning both on the economic and military fronts despite it being one of the most heavily sanctioned countries on earth. I guess the point being that you can't just throw money at the problem, you need to spend it wisely. Every war nato is backing could've easily been solved over the phone using basic diplomacy.

On the other hand I cannot see how the war in Gaza leads to a better situation for Israel. If they occupy Gaza, they will have a mess on their hand. Together with the harm done to the civilian population, they are breeding the next generation of Hamas (or whatever next terrorist organization). They have and are continuing to loose he support of the West - and Netanjahu buries his criminal affairs and the incompetence, which allowed the attack in the first place, under it.

Unlike Ukraine, people living in Gaza can’t leave Gaza, no surrounding countries will help any of them, the civilians can’t do anything but be used by Hamas as human shields or Israel as target practice. It’s a now win situation where neither side is right about what they are doing, to take a side and say the other is vehemently wrong is to deny any logic and to the situation. Pray for civilians!

The “Palestinians “ didn’t exist yet. They didn’t exist until 1960’s… and yet we MUST believe that they are the only indigenous people, and that ALL the land is theirs, that the Jews…the only ones who have ever negotiated for peaceful division, are the invaders stealing land and are the aggressors. Help me understand ... I thought Palestine was created in 1920 by the victorious allies after WW1 in the Treaty of Sèvres, along with Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, etc. Why would we not consider the people of that new state Palestinians from 1920 onwards? And how are the Israelies the only ones who ever negotiated for a two-state solution? What about Camp David and Oslo? The last Israeli leader who was serious about that was Yitzhak Rabin, murdered by Zionist extremists in 1995. Since then Israel has been ruled by leaders with zero interest in a lasting peace and who benefit politically from a never-ending conflict with Hamas and Hezbollah.

@@davidbutler116 Ok, I’ll help you understand. Palestine was named by the Romans (Hadrian) after they conquered Judea and dispersed the Jews. (Look up Jewish Diaspora) He changed the name to cut the Jews from land. There was never a nation called “Palestine “ and there were no people who called themselves Palestinian until the 1960’s for political expediency. Palestine was the name of a territory on a map. There is no Palestinian language, no ancient Palestinian coins and so on. What you’re referring to in 1920 is the British winning the land from the Ottoman Turks who sided with the Axis in WWI, and who had controlled the territory for the previous 400 years. At no point has there ever existed a Nation, State or Country of Palestine. The now British territory was called “The British mandate for Palestine”. It was inhabited by Jews, Arabs, Christians, Druiz etc… None of those groups had ever had a nation called Palestine. In fact, when the Arabs were rebelling against the British in the mid 1930’s, they called it the Arab revolt. It never occurred to them to call themselves Palestinian. There is no separate group of Arabs who can remotely be considered to be the only indigenous people of the territory of Palestine. That is a lie, plain and simple. So the British had promised to turn the mandate over to the Arabs AND to the Jews. From the very start they were going to have to negotiate and share. The Jews wanted to negotiate, the Arabs never have. That is the source of the conflict. The British turned over the area now known as Jordan to the Arabs. They tried to do the same in Israel with the Jews but the Arabs would have none of it. They demanded it all and have not wavered from that demand with a continuing promise to destroy the Jews as seen by the election of Hamas and their promise to wipe out Israel and they’re chants of “from the river to the sea” Camp David: it was an agreement between Egypt and Israel. It has nothing to do with the “Palestinians “. You have to remember that the nations surrounding Israel all hated Israel and attacked Israel without provocation unless you count wanting to exist as a provocation. The Failure of the Oslo accords : jewishunpacked.com/the-oslo-accords-peace-between-israelis-and-palestinians/ Doomed from the start and undermined by continuing Arab violence and distrust on every side. As to your last comment about Israel not wanting peace 🤦‍♂️ What’s wrong with you? Why would Jews want thousands of rocket attacks over decades, having their Olympic athletes murdered, having extremists sneak across the border to kidnap, rape and murder them? The assertion makes no sense. The Jews want peace and to be left alone. They control Gaza because Gaza is used as a staging area by the Arabs from which to launch attacks and plot war. What’s important here is that you can’t understand the present if you don’t have any awareness of the past.

A few things here, Hamas has a history of using citizens as meat shields so there's that point. Secondly more tactical, what exactly are you expecting on that front? A few things to note, whether you agree with the statement or not, Israel views oct 7 as their 9/11. Which as we can see from america's reaction to 9/11 is a huge major emotionally motivating factor. Secondly Hamas started this war and it is essentially seen by Israel as ''if we don't get rid of hamas now they will do it again'' Lastly Over the years, many countries who initially criticized the actions of Israel , later agreed with them. Notably, operation opera in destroying Hussein's nuclear plant that was going to be used to destroy Israel.

I think there are multiple facets to this one-sided view of Israel, at least among a significant portion of the world: First, there is the vast power differential. When one side of a conflict has an enormous military advantage -- regardless of who's right and wrong -- it's human nature to root for the 'underdog.' Second, there is most definitely anti-Semitism involved, not only for racial reasons but for cultural and religious reasons as well (especially among Israel's predominantly Muslim neighbors). Third, there are those among Progressives whose entire geopolitical outlooks are shaped by the likes of Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn. They reflexively oppose ANYONE who the United States government supports, ESPECIALLY if it's militarily. Fourth, Hamas' "human shield" strategy has proven VERY effective. But intermingling and integrating themselves deeply among the Palestinian populace, they make civilian casualties inevitable, making any Israeli military response a public relations disaster.

Good points - and I'd like to add a few more. Part of the problem is that for the past forty years, more and more institutions of higher education have been inseminating people who lean left into seeing the world through one lens only - the oppressed and the oppressor. They strip down the complexity of issues, they bleach out history and the bad things one side does so that a single-sided narrative can be presented. Second, both sides of the political spectrum in many "Western" countries, though there's now backlash in certain countries of Europe, many of which have seen an influx of migrants from Islamic countries, have strayed away from holding Western muslims accountable for the fact that many, not all, of the countries their parents or grandparents came from are oppressor states with no freedom, no rights, no tolerance. Which of course, only plays into the narrative that many left-leaning people are taught in college. I mean, even most Republican politicians in America won't talk openly about the oppressive nature of many, again not all, Islamic countries for fear of losing votes from moderates and center-left Democrats who might have absorbed some of that oppressor/oppressed narrative. Another part of the problem, and it add itself to the intertwined issues I just noted - is that the countries of the Middle East stopped ganging up and attacking Israel jointly. I think if Syria or Egypt or Lebanon had joined in after October 7th and it was a wider, regional conflict, you wouldn't see as much backlash against Israel. Oh, there would still be some, but if you look at press coverage and polling data from the wars from 47 to 73, there was way more support for Israel than today because they were the underdog. But each of its neighbors learned that Israel would and could defend itself so it's been over 40 years now since a major war between Israel and one of its neighbors. And...if you look....countries doing better today than 40 years ago in that region - Jordan, Egypt, and even the UAE (which I can't recall if they participated in any of the post WW2 conflicts) all focused on developing their economies as best as they could and trying to establish more moderate religious beliefs across the country where as places that played the victim card - Lebanon, Palestine, Yemen, etc. had their economies and then their governments collapse to the point where they are now failed states filled with religious zealots who's anger and resentment at being left behind by the world is pointed towards Israel and America by their religious leaders who use faith as a weapon and as a tool to stay in power.

I stopped reading your essay after your first point. It's not human nature to root for the underdog. Many don't because they root for winners. #2 - If the underdog is a terrorist using terrorist tactics most people don't root for cheats such as those deployed by Hamas. #3 Rooting interests are usually more biased than those with greater and more in-depth political understanding.

It would be legitimate to call it war if Israel admitted Palestine as an independent state. Because war is a state of relationships between countries. So far, Gaza is an unregulated enclave that they've been slowboiling and missed the pressure hike.

It's interesting how Murray is so vigilant calling out anti-Semitism with regards to the Middle East and this war. Yet I'm pretty sure he'll be obtuse about anti-Semitism when anti-Semitism on the Right fringes of Trump's base is brought to his attention. He'll then more than likely try to call out 'the other side' and somehow make some lame attempt at false equivalency. He kind of did something like this generally when Trump was being discussed towards the end of the panel discussion. He somehow thinks that there is always symmetry or that is has to exist rather than looking at what is going on and accepting obvious asymmetry.

You just proved Douglas's point. You're talking about the number of deaths, which is an indication of who is winning or losing. Putin ordered his forces to invade Ukraine. The I/P conflict predated the Oct 7th attacks. As for the 'Israel cannot win' narrative and the 'you cannot put out 80% of a fire', it's because you cannot use the military to defeat an ideology. See the British experience in Northern Island. Or Kenya. Or Malaya. But as a starting pointing there's Gaza which has been described as the world's largest open-air prison, and Israel have repeatedly allowed their settlers to 'abuse' and confiscate property from Palestinians on the West Bank. So perhaps comparing a hot war against the Red Army, on Ukrainian soil, on the edge Europe with the I/P conflict is particularly jaw-dropping.

@@johnathanh2660 before the war started, Israel gave Gazan people jobs in Israel and allowed them in for medical treatment, alongside with providing the Gaza strip with water and electricity because their gov was busy on spending money on other things (rockets, tunnels etc). then the war started and the rest is known. Israel is allways being blamed for making Gaza "an open air prison". however no one is willing to talk about Egypt, which has a border with Gaza as well and as it looks like, the Egyptians are more terrified about Gaza and Hamas than Israel does because they know their mentality however nobody is accusing Egypt of making Gaza an air open prison despite having a border with Gaza, just like Israel has.

Is Douglas Murray really saying what I think he is saying ? For context what Israel has always wanted was a State of its own , and to achieve this aim in years gone by they have forced Palestinians off their ancestral Homelands. The Palestinians have lived and worked on their lands for thousands of years , you can see it in the buildings of the old cities of Israel , Why should they be forced to leave ? The ever so nice phrase "Let Israel Win" really means getting rid of the Palestinians.

The Palestinians most certainly did not arrive to that land "thousands" of years ago. That is false. The Arabs ethnically cleansed Egypt of Egyptians, Syria of Syrians, Algeria of Algerians and are trying to ethnically cleanse the indigenous Jewish people off the land of Judea.

for thousands of years....dude you're wrong, that was the jews long before there were any "Arabs" or "Palestinians" which by the way was never meant to describe a "people". The oldest archeological sites are jewish, not Palestinian. So if this land is ancestral to anyone, than it is to the jews. The palestinans mostly weren't forced off "their" land by Israelis, nope Sir, that was by the arab states. They ordered and forced the people off these land so not to get into the crossfire. Ben Gurion and Golda Maier tried to convince them to stay and be a part of Israel, they wouldn't. Well, they lost and that was the price to pay, as every aggressor has to pay. The rest of the lands were bought from Jordanian landowners. So before you continue to spread the typical Hamas-lies, better get your information right

The Kingdom of Israel exited over 2000 years ago. Palestine is a Roman name, given by the emperor who conquered the kingdom of Israel. The Jews are the original inhabitants of that area. Arabs spread across the land from the Arab peninsula to the south and they didn't do it peacefully.

The reason the Israelis aren't allowed to win is because of the way the region was annexed. There was no "war", the superpowers of the day just annexed the region while mostly ignoring the local population that was there. I'm not saying there's an easy answer to the problem but it helps to actually look at what created the problem in the first place.

There can be no honest discussion of this without considering Netanyahu's own political and legal position- he is only in power so long as he satisfies the far-right coalition that put him in power, and if the war ends, Netanyahu will be directly in court for the criminal prosecution that was already set to begin before the war started, for corruption. Stop talking about "Israel" and start talking about the specific people and policies driving the war- they want us to think Netanyahu speaks for Israel. He doesn't. Most Israelis want him gone....

Why is it that people suddenly become 4 years old when discussing complicated global issues like this? Maybe there was a time when one group truly held the moral high ground. But both sides have killed children. And they’ve been doing it for decades. Let’s leave “morality” out of this. Both sides will have you believe that are the victim while the other is the aggressor. But they are all of those things at all times. You have to ask yourself whether you want to deal with a state that commits war crimes and shows up to their trial or a state that just commits war crimes. That’s the options we’ve got if you stop infantilizing your favorite side and see things for what they are.
