STORYLINE:
Backed by tanks, Israeli troops continued shelling the southern Lebanese village of Bint Jbail on Tuesday, after a day and night of fierce fighting with Hezbollah guerrillas, military officials said.
Bint Jbail, around 10 kilometres (6 miles) from the village of Maroun al-Ras, was pounded by artillery.
Tanks were seen moving around Maroun al-Ras, a frontier village purportedly captured by the Israeli forces in heavy fighting over the weekend.
Artillery could be heard being fired while plumes of smoke could be seen rising from the hilltops behind Maroun al-Ras.
Military officials said the forces had surrounded the village, imposed a closure and seized some houses on the outskirts. But the Israeli army said fighting with Hezbollah guerrillas, who are reportedly putting up a stiff resistance on their own terrain, was ongoing.
Inside Israeli territory, one Israeli soldier told AP Television that they "also want peace."
"We can be together without problems," he added when asked what his message for the Hezbollah fighters was.
Israel's bombardment of the Lebanese population and infrastructure has killed nearly 400, mostly civilians.
Some 750,000 people have been displaced from Lebanon and the transportation network has been dismembered.
