STORYLINE
The Israeli army continued its ground offensive against Hezbollah militants along the border with Lebanon on Monday but suspended airstrikes over Lebanon for 48 hours, a day after killing 56 civilians, most of them children, in the Lebanese town of Qana.
An Israeli tank was struck by a rocket as it operated on the Lebanese side of the border on Monday morning. Soldiers could be seen escaping from the tank seconds later.
No casualties have been reported.
The exact location of the ground forces cannot be given due to IDF (Israeli Defence Force) restrictions.
The pause in aerial bombings began at 2 a.m. local time (23:00 GMT Sunday) and will last for 48 hours, an army spokesman said.
The halt does not apply to artillery fire or limited ground operations which entered the 20th day on Monday.
Israel reserves the right during the suspension to attack any militants who pose an immediate threat to Israel, like those preparing to launch rockets against Israel or transporting rockets that they are preparing to fire, the army said.
Israel is also considering to "expand and strengthen" its attack on Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon, the defence minister said on Monday, possibly with more ground troops.
The Qana attack escalated international pressure on Washington to back an immediate end to the fighting and prompted US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to cut short her Mideast mission.
For eight days, Rice has been in meetings around the globe, trying to find a consensus to end the 20 days of fighting between Israel and Lebanon-based Hezbollah without pressing Israel to implement an immediate ceasefire, a policy many observers say was taken by its main regional ally, Israel, as a green light to continue its bombardment of Lebanon, resulting in hundreds of civilian deaths.
Rice said on Monday she will push for a ceasefire and a "lasting settlement" in the conflict between Lebanon and Israel through a UN Security Council resolution this week.
