Played this song at my wife’s funeral many years ago. No song describes better the type of person she was. Made me so happy to hear this song and to see your reaction. Israel was an absolute icon in Hawaii. Look at some of his last live concerts during the mid 1990s. So emotional. On a ventilator and couldn’t stand but still gave 100%.

Bruddah Iz is the easiest name to remember him by. ❤️ The funeral they had for him was amazing. So many reasons I’m proud to be Hawaiian.

I remember seeing him on TV one time years ago and thinking he has an amazing voice. I just realized he passed away in 1997. Apparently that was his celebration of life in the video and those were his ashes. I see he was a major star in Hawaii. I'm gonna have to search for more about him and more of his music because he was an incredible talent.

It’s ok. It’s a tough name for some people. No worries. He was layed to rest like a King. I was at his funeral. It was epic. No one has ever been given the honors he was given. He deserve it. If not more. The funeral was so massive no building could handle it. Even a stadium wouldn’t be big enough. Lines for several city blocks away had people waiting to pay their respects. There were hula dancers. Rich and poor people. Locals and foreigners. It went on for hours. They had his funeral at the office build of the state capital. His ash were lay out in the ocean. He was taken out by one of our rediscovered greatest ancient ships. Once again many came to their respect to him. In Ancient Greece kings fear be forgotten. Sometimes wish they were a commoner because of it. IZ was that common man rise to greatness. That brought a sincere heartwarming voice to the masses. A man that will never be forgotten. That will always be remembered by the Hawaiian people and the world. Rest In Peace

This is from his album facing future, which is absolutely beautiful, one song on it is hawaii 78 and he sings about the king and queen of hawaii and it will touch your heart. The ashes were his, he was beloved by his people and to honor him they paddled his ashes all the way around the island before spreading them in the water...♡

IZ is an inspiration and was loved by all. I was at Makua when they spread his ashes from the Hokule'a. Cars stopped along the 2 lane road leading to Ka'ena bringing traffic to a stand-still. Hundreds of people were wading in the water and hundreds more were on land. A procession of big rigs blew and held their horns echoing through the valley while his ashes were placed into the ocean making it sound as if the State of Hawaii was crying . . . it's a moment I will never forget. An incredible celebration of life for an incredible man!!

A wonderful version. Now you owe it to yourselves to listen to Eva Cassidy's version on Live at Blues Alley on KZfaq. She's definitely a singer who makes the song her own. I find her beyond astonishing.

His last name is pronounced Kamaka-viva-ole, (our w has a v sound.) and IZ well it's "is" short and slang for his first name.

Iz is the shortened version of his first name and is pronounced just like the verb "is". His core fans refer to this song as the song of the century and I can't argue with that. He is gone too soon.
