Welcome back to ISTANBUL TURKEY! In this video, we are taking you on a full street food tour of Kadıköy, which is the Asian side of Istanbul. We are going by ferry and we will be eating Kadıköy’s BEST street food, including lahmacun (baked minced meat flatbread), Turşu suyu (pickle juice), a full seafood feast with lakerda (pickled bonito), turbot fish and raki. We will also try a Kadıköy specialty dessert “Kup Griye” and of course Turkish coffee.
This was an amazing day of eating Turkish food and Kadıköy is an awesome place to explore! The ferry is very scenic and the street food is DELICIOUS!

The "mystery pickle" is actually an unripe plum. It's also eaten without being pickled, sometimes also with a touch of salt. Crisp, sour and delicious!

@bassam2375

Sofia omeboshi are plums preserved in salt, whereas what I’m talking about here is just raw unripe plums lightly dipped in salt and eaten straight away or as seen in the video pickled in a solution that usually contains some type of vinegar.

Have never been to Istanbul specifically, but went to Turkey for the fiirst time a few years a go, being Irish I had very few dealings with Turkish people in my life, had no idea about Turkish culture and didn't know what to exepect, but I have to say I loved the country and the people, who could not have been any nicer and more welcoming. It's a great country with lovely people and I'd recommend anyone to visit.

Hi Luke and Sabrina, Glad you are back in Turkey!! It is one of our favorite destinations (for 24 years now). The round green fruit at the pickle shop in Kadıköy on Güneşlı Bahçe are called Erık. They are a great crispy green plum the Turks love. Up the street from where the pickle shop is, a famous lokata called Çiya Sofrası serves stewed lamb with these plums. They are both sweet, sour, crunchy and delicious.

7:58 these are pickled green plums or prunus domestica and yes, it is a fruit. Plums are very popular both when they are ripe and early harvest. The green ones are everywhere during the spring with their sour and tangy taste. They can be founded in every corner. The ripe red ones are a summer delicacy. Turkey is the origin place of plums. It even grows on the streets. Every house with a garden probably has a plum tree in it.

The green thing in the pickle juice looks like what Persians call “gojeh Sabz”. From what I can gather is it’s a type of plum that is no good when fully ripe so they eat them green (Unripe) and tangy with salt

The ''mystery pickle" is a kind of plum called 'yeşil erik' in Turkish and 'greengage' in English. It has a very sour taste, so it is a good idea to pickle it I think.
