G'day Guys and Gals!
In this video I talk about some COMMON ISSUES and COMMON PROBLEMS that the Isuzu Mu-x and D-max can experience. I also show you how to fix these issues and overcome the problems with some simple DIY work. If you have any other issues that you have come across, please let me know down in the comments below. If we make this video a talking space it will be great for me and others to learn about any other issues that these vehicles experience.
My TOP 7 ISSUES with the Isuzu Mu-x and D-max are-
1. A/C belt squeaks (replace belt)
2. Hub seal Squeal/singing noise (Lubricate hub seals)
3. DPF models - TURBO issues (Warranty Turbo replacement necessary)
4. Body Mounts sagging and cracking (Replace with new mounts - Colorado mounts also Fit)
5. Body Cracking around build place in engine bay and behind airbox (Major Body repair)
6. Driveline Vibrations and Shuddering (Multiple different fixes as discussed in video)
7. Head unit crashing after period of time (Replace with Aftermarket or new head unit)
That is my top 7 Issues I have seen over the years of working as a Mechanic and also owning an Isuzu Mu-x. If you do have any other issues I didn't mention in the video just drop it down in the comments below and we can all help each other out to diagnose the issue.
The Isuzu Mu-x and D-max are a very reliable vehicle and do have minimal issues in relation to most other vehicles on the market today. The Isuzu Mu-x and D-max are a great choice of vehicle and will give you years of trouble free motoring if serviced regularly and looked after.
DISCLAIMER - Please don't let this video scare you off purchasing an Isuzu Mu-x or D-max. Every vehicle on the market, any vehicle ever made has issues. In relation to other vehicles on the market the Mu-x has very minimal issues in comparison its rivals. These are just some of the common issues and common problems to look out for if you are purchasing a new or used Isuzu Mu-x or D-max.
Isuzu Mu-x and Isuzu D-max are great 4x4 vehicles and have the reliable 4JJ1 engine which has been tried and tested for many years. The Vehicles are of a solid construction and there aren't too many issues or problems to look out for when purchasing one. A general check over is always a good idea, check for corrosion, damage and any leaks. An RACQ Pre purchase inspection is a great idea if you don't have much mechanical knowledge too.
I have fitted every modification to the Isuzu MU-X myself and really enjoy filming and teaching you guys how to do the same to your own 4x4 vehicles. The modifications I have done are listed below -
-AFN Bull Bar
-AFN 9" LED Spotlights
-Domin8r Extreme 12000IB winch
-AUXBEAM S3 LED Foglights
-Oricom DTX4200 UHF Radio with Town and country Aerial Kit 3dbi + 6.5dbi

Thanks Nick, very informative video. I've had the turbo issue on my 2019 MUX after 24,000 kms. Was replaced under warranty by Isuzu NZ. New turbo has the green dot so fingers crossed. Done 30,000kms so far and no other issues.

Thanks Nick ya legend! Love how you show us the problems parts and explain how to fix them 👍 2015 MUX LST…no problems so far. I check for the body cracks from time to time…so far so good, but I’ll be checking out those mounts now too.

I’ve actually had the body crack on my ‘16 dmax. Mostly right behind the headlights. Only just discovered this so I haven’t had it fixed. I’ve heard hit and miss stories of Isuzu covering the repair cost with many dealers blaming aftermarket accessories. I believe the factory mounts are way to soft and allow the body to flex causing the cracking. I’ve heard people swap in the Colorado body mounts which are way better.

The ac belt squeak is a really easy fix as you said. I bought my dmax second hand as an ex fleet car with 107,000km, I changed both the ac and the alternator belt at the same time, the alt belt didn't need changing but more just peace of mind. Both were the factory belts and I've changed to aftermarket and hasn't squeaked since. I did have a fuel pressure sensor fail on me, the car would start as normal then stall soon after, more commonly when parked uphill. I had to prime the fuel filter and it would run perfect afterwards. I got it replaced by a local mechanic and haven't had that problem since Loving my dmax and wouldn't buy anything else!

Hello Nick, great videos keep them coming. Early 2016 (pre DPF) LSM D-Max 5 sp manual, around 80,000 km started jumping out of 2nd gear. After dealer got the go ahead from IUA to repair under warranty the saga began. At 100,000 km it went in for repair which found problem to be a worn selector fork, since it was mid 2020 in the height of covid-19 with no parts in Australia I was without vehicle for 13 weeks. When I went to pick it up it wouldn't go into reverse gear, during the next 6 weeks the gearbox was sent to a specialist gearbox repairer in Melbourne (not IUA dealer), this time the problem was the reverse gear had been put on backwards. Do not trust local IUA dealer anymore and since use Local Isuzu Truck agent for my servicing/mechanical work. Now with 136,000 km on the D-Max no other major issues, had tail shaft/transfer case seal replaced as leaking which seems to be common. Have lubricated hub seals as squeaking sometimes, no cracks in engine bay or body mounts, no turbo problems.

Thanks for your informative vids on Isuzu MUX. I have a 2015 model with 73000 k's bought new. An issue I recently attended to was when the vehicle felt underpowered. A quick connection to my cheap scan tool provided the diagnostic info I needed to resolve the issue - Code PO403 (exhaust gas recirc. circuit). A few youtube searches guided me to the EGR valve being the culprit. I first emptied two cans of 'inlet manifold conditioner/cleaner' in through the MAP sensor orifice as seen on one of your other vids. Removal/strip down and clean (unbinding the valve stem within its guide within EGR) was what was needed. While at it, I removed and cleaned the throttle valve and scooped out a large amount of carbon deposits which extend down into the inlet manifold which I did not have full access to for cleaning. I think I may have to remove the manifold in the future to be sure its not too restricted. It would be helpful to view a comprehensive vid on this process and will keep searching. The vehicle is good now - full power etc. Thanks again for your work.

Had the turbo replaced under warranty on my 2019 MUX at 40000ks, no other issues. Great videos thanks Nick. Replaced the head unit myself with a Pioneer 6350BT, best mod I’ve done to the vehicle…love it, high def screen, responsive and CarPlay, smaller 7” screen is no issue due to the much improved definition…

Hello Nick . I watched your videos on changing filters which made the job very easy. A big thankyou for that .Factory air filter 55 dollars , Factory fuel filter 75 dollars. My Mux has 40 , 000 on clock. Fitted new filter in Provent also .75 dollars..It has collected 500 ml of oil in 40 , 000 k .I heard a slight whistle of AC belt today on start up .Done a couple of trips down south to Thredbo Canberra, Eden plus a few laps of Bathurst ,New England , fuel consumption 8 •5 litres a hundred .Trip out to Longreach , Winton , Mt Isa and surrounds , 8 litres a hundred..When travelling light from Northern NSW to Sunshine Coast 7 litres a hundred. I hate taking the car to the dealer to have car serviced at 500 dollars a pop , for what they do . You can do the maintenance yourself and know it's being done properly . It's a necessary evil to take it to the dealer so your covered for warranty purposes..I've always feel my car is in danger when taking it to a dealer for maintenance. You are trusting them to do the right thing and do the maintenance as per book..I bought a VX Commodore in 2000 from new had it for 20 years 300 , 000 ks only things I had to change was an Alternator and one set of brake pads plus usual filters , oil , one set spark plugs.. Very cheap motoring...Wish I could buy a new Aussie made Commodore . Minimal maintenance cost ... Very reliable...Your Videos are first class Nick .You make a lot of people very happy with you giving us all great insight into our Isuzus..

I've got a 2017 Lsu and mate I've had, 3 turbos changed (on my 4th and last) going aftermarket now, my air con condenser went at 45000kms (replaced under warranty). With that being replaced, they had to Rip apart my whole dash as it sits behind there and when they put it together the plastics don't line up anymore. Had bug fights with the dealership because they were stating that's how they come from factory lol. Started to lose love for the dmax slowly after this. My left side mirror started to fail when it folds and now folds in completely out of sync with the right side mirror at 50,000kms, head unit vol up and vol down buttons broke. My belt also needs changing now and I have the squeak pretty bad coming from the driver wheel area but cannot be the bearings as I've regreased them (thanks to your video). I've yet to check the body mounts now.... Also to note, the incab noise of the motor is really loud, even after I've dyna matted the whole interior. I really do like my dmax but after everything I've been through, the countless trips to isuzu, losing the car for days on end and the trouble the dealerships give to actually approve a warranty claim is the reason I'd never buy a isuzu car again.

Hi Nick.A really great set of videos ,its never to late to learn. Two problems so far .2015 D Max Man 4x4 highride LS U. Half way around Oz in Perth rear springs went S shape. towing 2ton caravan ball weight 192-225Kg. Had Pedders fit heavy duty springs and shocks around 45000Km. I think their was a recall but did not take it up.75000 now on the clock [yes we are retired] and only saged 5 mm.other problem front wheels camber/caster scrubbing tyres fixed at around 65000km but I see right hand side is out of spec.[must buy a digital level] NB tub capacity is 1 Ton which includes weight of tub and canopy.Again many thanks for you videos.Kind regards Bill Park Newcastle

CHASSIS RUST - Now a listed check for all Dmax and MUX in New Zealand when they are taken in for their annual road fitness certificate or similar (its called a WOF here). The fault is that the front chassis crossmember, just behind the bumper, rusts on older D-Max and MUX models up to about 2019. If they fail the inspection the only remedy is to have the whole cross member cut out and a new one fitted. We have both a 2015 Dmax and a 2015 MUX, the Dmax lives in a garage, gets loved and looked after, has only 56K on it but it still has the rust problem. The MUX lives outside and had it bad but has been fixed -- this rust is a huge issue in New Zealand.

Hi Great video, About 4000km in on a new MUX MY19 LSU had a sensor that selects 2wd/4wd H/L come loose with no real reason for it to happen. Was driving when 4×4 light came on. Pulled straight over then it went into 4x4. After 20mins of not being able to stop it from happening didn't take any risks and rang Isuzu assistance straight away. Fitter said that he believed it was the sensor and had seen it happen 3 or 4 times on the Isuzu. He also said he had heard from another mechanic of someone not being aware of the change and causing a lot of damage from driving through it. Long story short it was towed to nearest dealer and they were excellent in communication and follow up and went above and beyond to get my vehicle back to my home address 250km away the following Monday. The big problem was the roadside assist outside of the call out and towing. As this happened on a Saturday afternoon during school holidays and being a weekend it was absolutely useless. Just be aware we were lucky our son was able to do 2 trips from near Perth to get us and all of our gear back home. No accommodation or car hire. I did follow up and Got $200 voucher from RAC for out of pocket costs which was better than nothing although not easy. We were very lucky we didn't go up north as we had originally planned otherwise we would completely stuffed. Still love my Muxy! Just be aware that roadside assit 24/7 365 doesn't have to include after hours, weekends or school holidays hire cars or emergencyaccommodation. Anyway keep up the great work Cheers Johny

Thankfully at 36000kms on my 2019 D-Max, I havent had these issues. Though I have got issues with rust formation at all the weld sites. For a vehicle that has been driven in the city for 99% of those kms, it was very disappointing that the dealer determined that this was a result of "extreme environmental conditions" even with the rust causing large chunks of the protective coating to flake off in areas

Thanks for another informative video again Nick. I’ve started getting the belt squeal but that should be an easy repair. I have had a rear wheel come off at speed and have found the rear wheel studs to be very short compared to other manufacturers. All up, at almost 200,000km on a 2015 LS-U MU-X I’m very happy though a rear locker would be nice so that’s on my next mods list.

But the MUX will only be a shopping trolley, I'll stick with the Landy off-road, you guys can have your limp mode pretent 4 x 4's

I had the wheel squeak issue, After a lot of mucking around I found it wasn't the seals. In my case the anti rattle shims on the front brake pads were somehow able to slide in toward the rotor and rub making the horrendous noise. The fix was easy , I just positioned them back where they belong and found there were some convenient little tabs that I bent over to keep them there. Hope this helps.

Great video as always mate!! I have 2020 LST MUX which comes with a green dot. Around a month ago I started hearing this light whining sound, not sure what it was, then it starting getting louder. Was easiest to hear when taking off slowly(crawling). I took it to my dealer and they took some videos and send to Isuzu tech which said "its fine, it's within normal parameters", because of this they didn't change the turbo. They will only change when it gets worse and start sounding like a fire truck.

Hey Nick thanks for the information and I have a 2015 mux and I've dealt with most of the issues mentioned but another issue that has just arisen is my air conditioner unit. It started turning on and off in the beginning now it just doesn't work fan included both front and rear. Going in for a service soon so I'll let you know what happened. I think it the relay and belt tbh.

I have myself and also heard of people having issues with the rear diff spider gears wearing, I purchased my 2015 dmax second hand with 140k on the clock, drained the diff oil and found a substantial amount of metal on the magnet, fixed the issue by replacing the centre with a lsd centre from an earlier Colorado. Sometimes I've seen major failure where they completely strip.

Thanks for the video. We’ve got a 2019 MY2018 MU-X. So far perfect. But only done around 40K. One possible point of difference for us is we always give it a minute to cool the turbo before shutting down the engine. On a hot day off the highway, maybe 5 mins. We also keep the DPF display up and never turn it off mid burn. After a burn is complete, we give it 5 mins to cool from 600 deg. When it was new I had problems refueling as it would click off. Later the dealer explained to not put the nozzle fully in. With it out about 4-5 cm and kind of flat I can use the truck stop fast fill. I haven’t fitted a catch can just yet. However we never do short trips and use fuel doctor. Plus we change the oil more frequently than required. I suspect this helps. It runs like new. However I’ll probably fit one sometime this year.

Mine’s a 2015 MUX and it clicks off while refuelling too. Like you mention, pulling the nozzle out a few cms does the trick. Also after it is full it usually does a big gurgle and spits out a bit of fuel if you remove the nozzle straight away…so I give it a few seconds to clear its throat first 😉

Hi Nick thanks for all your"how to" videos, after watching your "common issues" I went out to my 2017 Mux to have a look under the bonnet to see if mine had any cracks on the inner guards and to my surprise I found two cracks on the passenger side the 1st was exactly where you described and the second was a little further back just in front of the fuel filter. What exactly should I do next "what's the proper procedure"

Hi Nick. Our 2017 DMax had the air-conditioning go last August. The dealer didn't honor the warranty.we took it to dealer twice and he replaces hoses etc and said it was fixed each time but one day later, the air wouldn't be working again.Afee $700 in bills, We got a second opinion. Easy diagnosis showed evaporator Waa the problem. Another $3,200 to get it fixed. Very disappointed with Isuzu as it is a common problem and they knew it.

Yep, 2019 MU-X - we are on our 3rd turbo so this problem rings very true.... Factory head unit (LSU) had a broken button, 12 weeks and they replaced under warranty is a "refurbished" unit - we will see how long that lasts. 🤫

Another common failure, evaporator under dash cracks at pipe joint and looses refrigerant gas. Repair, remove dash and fit new evaporator. Mod to prevent failure. Attach the long alloy pipe that goes through the firewall down behind motor to a place higher up the pipe with a rubber lined p clamp to the firewall to brace the alloy pipe that fails due to its length and engine vibration.

Where do I start… 2020 Isuzu MU-X LST Turbo blew at 20,000KM I then decided to modify it heavily, my CV’s have been a nightmare, I’ve gone through 2 sets with the lift. I have recently installed pedders CV’s and free wheeling hubs, along with a superior engineering diff drop. Haven’t had any further issues. Nick - I also had the same issues with the front body mounts however at my last service had them replaced, the new ones seem a lot thicker in design and had no further issues.

Thanks Nick. Pretty sure I’ve posted before about my 2017 LS-U but Isuzu didn’t honour the warranty for the cracked inner guards and left us for dead in the middle of NT last year. Cost us $10k to fix. Air con went at 125,000km volume button on the head unit broke, both of these were fixed under warranty. Doing dpf burn off every 100-150km now. The customer support or lack of we have experienced from IUA head office is frankly disgusting. We filed a VCAT Application a few months ago which could take up to a year to be heard. It’s been a nightmare owning this thing. Panel beaters said the cracks will happen again. Mine was the 5th repair of a Dmax/mux cracked inner guards they had that year. Isuzu are blaming it on the gvm upgrade (installed after the cracks appeared ) They originally said it was the xrox bull bar until I pointed out the dealer approved it through finance at the time… Never again would I buy an Isuzu especially the current gen being close to the same price as a Prado which is far superior especially for off-road work. At least they stick by their slogan ‘Go your own way.’ 😂

Hi. Thanks for your detailed descriptions of issues and solutions. Mu-x off road abilities are very interesing for me but what is more important for me now (I'm just choosing my next vehicle) is long on road trips. So what's your opinion about Mu-x behaving there? I've just heard from other bloggers that 3.0l engine noice could be slightly annoying. Do you by chance have some video where you drive on road with constant speed some time and then with acceleration without any acompaning voices or radio so just to hear pure engine sound. Thanks a lot anyway.

My thoughts on the panel cracking is. - : - a poorly installed snorkel. an access hole that is maybe a tad off position or has been just hacked into the panel. - a poorly installed bull bar. the bull bar is attached to the chassis. the body work is on the mounts you have mentioned. movement must be clear between these two items. any hitting or rubbing will transfer a load onto the inner panel and I believe contribute to the crack situation. both of these items cross from the chassis to body. two different structures. adequate clearance is required. you should be able to fit 2 fingers in-between the bull bar and any of the guarding. after my bull bar was installed PROFESSIONALLY , I had panel rub marks by the time we drove home. plus the inner wheel arch plastic was attached to both the body and chasses. so just run an eye over your panel clearance. the car body will move heaps on the chasses when in use.

The wheel squeak is really annoying. It sounds like when you smack belt on the bed but really fast. Got a dealer take care of it a years ago and it still coming back. They said they don't know why. There is also an issue of cracking on the small spolier-like-thing above the rear window. It seems like the plastic were designed a little bit too small but they install it anyway. We've had that replaced a year ago but it happens again after a few months. Another issue is a fail on pulling motor for the trunk door. It is an automatic door that when closed, there is another motor that pulls the door. This pulling motor is broken so the trunk is not flat with the body of the car. Also replaced them a few months ago but it cannot be as perfect as when the car was brand new, there is still some visible gap. The last problem I've had is the plastic chrome on the trunk door almost fall off. I myself don't really understand the cause of this. My guess is either the glue was not strong enough (if it use glue) or the design is not perfect so the plastic chrome can't seat perfectly on the body. They already fixed this and it's been fine for now. Tbh I'm quite dissapointed with these issues as we bought this car brand new on 2018. When I was a kid, Isuzu was highly appreciated for how durable it is. At least my Mu-x has the engine that could use cheap diesel so we still keep the car. If not because of that, we gonna sell that piece of garbage and drive our 0 problem 2015 Accord.

I have had 2 issues on both my D Max's. First one on both of them is the body cracking. Exactly where you said on the side panel. I bolted a plate over as a patch but is currently having that sorted. This is on the 2014 d max (180000km), the 2018 d max (80000km) is starting the same problem now. The second issue I've had on both of them is alternators getting bits of grit under the brushes and as a result the alternator won't charge. Both vehicles were doing this on an annual basis during the rains. I sealed the back covers up on the alternators against the dealers recommendations as they said it would cause the alternator to over heat. Since I've done that fix I haven't had an alternator fail. Apart from that these two vehicles do all the farm running around and keep us mobile. I'm in central Africa so not sure if there are any differences but understand our model is assembled in South Africa.

How about the tailgate/boots don't lift high enough, obviously the car was designed by Frodo Baggins, anyone over 6ft will understand my pain. The bigger tyres and lift kit might fix the issue in your case, I have seen something about longer struts to increase clearance as the hinges have room to lift higher before hitting the roof, To be honest this probably goes for most SUVs in the MU-Xs competition.

I have my MY18 6sp auto dmax slam into 4th gear really hard especially going up hills changing down. It’s really quite a slam and shakes the car. Happens intermittently but feels like the transmission is about to fall out on the ground when it happens. When I’m going up a hill it’ll come down from 6-5 all good then thinks about changing form 5-4th for a bit then just goes bang and shudders the car violently. Just about gives you whiplash so can’t be doing the driveline any favours. Haven’t had it checked out as I don’t really trust the dealer to be tampering with it because I do a lot of country driving with it and don’t want to be stranded.

I found you have to be careful in the autos could be the manuals aswell but be careful when taking the centre console out when doing things like adjusting the handbrake there is a small sensor type thing that you can break and its quite easy to break but what it does is everything in the car will tell you it’s in park but that sensor tells the ignition barrel that it’s in park so when you break it you can’t turn the car off properly or pull the key out unless the battery is disconnected
