Stephen King's classic coming of age monster tale, IT, has finally been remade. Despite my endless nostalgic love for the 1990 TV Miniseries, I have always dubbed IT as the movie that NEEDS to be remade. A group of kids called The Losers Club face off against the trials and tribulations of growing up in the 80's, vicious bullies, a growing bodycount in their small town of Derry, and a demonic clown named Pennywise. Does this classic story from the world famous author finally come to screen in a way that does complete justice to the source material and once again floats into the nightmares of its viewers? Come watch my review and you'll float too!

Not really. Its hard to say which one is closer because Stephen King gives different descriptions of Pennywise throughout the book. The only constant is his silver suit and orange pompoms, and that is the one area of Pennywise where the move is identical to the book.

Tim curry’s pennywise cracked jokes, threw insults and boasted a lot (similar to the book) Skarsgard’s pennywise was like a savage animal that couldn’t control itself, mouth was always covered in saliva, never made a joke or insulted the kids and never really felt threatening. Curry’s was more book accurate in terms of personality and attitude in my opinion

Really liked this review Cody! I also didnt like the amount of cgi in this movie with Pennywise i thought that the actor when has the moments alone just him and his facial expresions was so much more effective and really capture the essense of the book Pennywise, an example of this is when Pennywise and Eddie are face to face in the house and have this really intense moment just they two, there you can really see the portrait that Bill skasgard could give of a really scary but dark humored clown. Im not a fan of the original series and was so happy when a I saw this movie bc i felt like finally they did a good adaptation to the book. Great work, keep it up :)

I agree that opening act with Georgie was such a let down. When he opened his mouth it looked like a cartoon almost. It just wasn’t real enough for me at all. Even tho the 90s mini series wasn’t exactly a great movie it will still scary and gave me nightmares for years. I still remember the night I watched it. For some reason that werewolf scene stuck with me only because I was so scared of werewolves as a child.

I recognize that the new movie is overall superior to the 90's one but it didn't catch up some importants details which resulted in me not praising it like everyone is doing. I'll be comparing the new film with the 90's and the book (though I haven't read the book since January 2013) - The new movie lacks of some what atmosphere that the first one had. I'm talking about a condition that makes the viewer feel like one of the Loser's Club. Don't get me wrong, the first time I watched the 90's film was in December of 2012 when I was 18 years old, so I'm not being blind for nostalgia effect. The first movie did a great job of ambientacion. -The cast crew in the first film was most beleaveble in terms of childhood. I'm not talking about acting precisely. It's just that the older one's are more natural in doing children stuff, they really feel like childrens, in their attitudes, their perception of the trouble around them . Meanwhile, in the 2017 film, the kids suffer for the Stranger Thing Syndrome as I like to call when we see a bunch of kids dealing with their problem or talking with eachother or with adults like if they were adults themselves. Their attitudes, decisions and ways of expressions make they look like mini-adults and that bothers me because, again, it doesn't help me to be immersed in the film to the point that I feel like one of those childrens, being strong together and resisting the evil things of the film, which is the great factor that imanes fear to the viewer: to feel like going on against that monsters that Henry and its gang and Pennywise are. And just a quick note, Beverly's actress and Mike's actor are somewhat older to the character -Richie. At first it can sound ridiculous to say that the Trashmouth kid was (in some levels) a negative aspect of the 2017 film, once he was the most proeminent character of all the Loser's Club members, but that's where the problem is. Richie was SO spotlighted during the whole filme, with his imitations, sharp talk and one-hit phrases that he became the center of attetion of all the film, in a toxic way, lowering the chacracther development of the others kids. I suspect that this was intentional as Finn Wolfhard, famous as he is now, would promote the film better with a character with as importance as the protagonist, at least in this new adaptation once Richie isn't that prevalent in the book and in the 90's movie as it was in the 2017 one. -Beverly is a damsel in distress in the new movie. What the Fuck was that???. That doesn't make any sense as the role point of fighting IT is doing this all the 7 children together! This is related to the bad situation that the producers created in the last part of this film. Again, trying to do just like Stranger Things, they created a situation where the kids in the Loser's Club argue with eachother about a subject, with two conflict ideias being discussed to the point the group of friends are divided in two or the bond of their friendships become shaken. Richie (it had to be the coool Richie) declaring that they should give up about fighting Pennywise while Bill saying that they need to keep going on against it. At the end, they put their differences aside to rescue poor Beverly, with her being awakened by Ben with a ~true love~ kiss and a cheesy red hering speech said by ~the now almost protagonist~ Richie (" You punched me in the face, you made me walk through shitty water, brought me to a fucking crackhead house and now... I'm gonna have to kill this fucking clown. Welcome to The Losers' Club asshole!") at the end. That was all a ridiculous and unecessery plot they put there, Geez. -The straight storytelling of the characters as kids is not as good as the original one where the events involving the adults are interleaved with flashbacks of the kids, 27 years ago. This way, you can fell better all the sensations related to the "comeback to Derry" that the adults need to do in order to finally finish Pennywise once at all. -The kids doesn't hang out in the Berrens as much, the Berrens doesn't get so much attencion. The scenes of them around the Berrens is important for setting and atmosphere -The exploration throught Derry's sewer in new movie is bland and rushed. On the other hand, in the 90's it takes some minutes of the film showing then going throw the sewer. Again, this creates a good atmosphere on the movie -Despite not remembering how little Stan and Mike's appearance when all kinds gather together is in the book, the new movie doesn't help highlighting them, specially in the action scene. Ben who searches all information about Derry's past and Stan's encounter with Henry Bowers doesn't happens -Henry attack on the kids in the ending are, again rushed. In the original movie shows Vic, Belch and him stalking the kids, going in the sewer and so on. Where's Vic and Belch now? And how could Henry Bowers fall from the well that way like he's gonna die? What about adult Henry? I hope to see some more details, especially about Patrick's fridge, the statue who attacks Richie etc in the next movie Again, I enjoyed the 2017's film, it did a great job updating the history especially and (the terror) of the book. But these are some questions that I made after watching IT.

I love this remake! I’ve seen a few clips of Bill as Pennywise in actual production without CGI that would have been much more effective. He was a great character actor for this role. I didn’t hate the CGI. But that scene in IT Chapter Two with Bev’s token scene where he was practical was the most horrific of all his scenes, I thought. He was very physical with his performance. And I loved how this was the 80’s, as well. That Dream Child! I saw that at the drive-in when it came out! Made my parents take me! Very enjoyable remake! The cast was perfect!

Awesome review sir! I really like the new Pennywise interpretation, I think the disjointed movements (at times) of the clown were spot on, like this evil being's veiled interpretation of what a clown should be and act like rather than a spot on interpretation. Love the change in the clown's voice and the drooling as it gets closer to feeding! Could have done without the jump scares as well, its more scary building up tension then blowing your wad every two minutes with a jump scare. But Cody you were spot on with the Zelda character from Pet Sematary! That as well is the type of tension building the IT remake could have used!

Cody Leach but with that part in mind, how is that going to play into the narrative with Mike being the librarian, getting then together, doing the research, it's not going to make sense unless they mk Ben do all that, once again diminishing Mike character and for what? I just don't see the logical reason why they would do that.

I just want to write that my name is Josh and i want to write that the director Andy Muschietti said that he wanted to create an IT Supercut that would be the two IT films edited together with all the footage that was cut from the theatrical cuts. the running time of the IT Supercut would be 6 hours and 30 minutes. if this were to happen then maybe they could make it available to stream on the streaming service HBOMAX.

Director Andy Muschietti kept Bill Skarsgård separate from the child actors up until they had to shoot scenes together. On the day of their first scenes together, the production staff warned the kids about how scary Skarsgård could be while in character. The kids brushed this off, claiming that they knew he was just an actor in a costume and that they were professionals and would be fine. However, when the time came for Skarsgård to be Pennywise for the scene, the kids were genuinely terrified.

Another great review bro! I agree with you on most points. Tim Curry was definitely scarier because he wasn't over-the-top or trying hard to be scary. Clowns are naturally off-putting to begin with so there's no need to go the extra mile that this new one did. Skarsgard's performance gave me 'Freddy's Dead' vibes in some scenes tbh, but mainly because of his voice and silliness. I wish they would've focused more on the Derry aspect of the story. I remember that being memorable in the miniseries. Henry Bowers embodied that in the original. Then again maybe the time-jumping captured that. The kids were okay, Stan's character was always a wet blanket though so I didn't mind this new actor, but agree about the overuse of CGI in this film being cringe-worthy. Overall, I think my expectations were a bit too high as well. P.S. that Nightmare 5 easter egg was golden!

When I really started to pay attention to IT, it was the 2017 version. Having the movie focus completely on the kids made it easier for me to follow. I am blind, so when I first saw the 1990 mini series, the going back-and-forth was really hard to follow. This one (for 2017 version) had audio description we are narrators are describing what’s happening in the film and it made it much easier to follow. Reading the book also helped me understand the 1990 version of IT as well. I know you haven’t read the book, but I think the book develops Stan a lot better than even the 1990s version, although, I think the scene where he was expressing his fear in the 1990 adaptation was a lot better then in the 2017 we make. I liked Pennywise in this version, but I definitely see what you mean. The original Pennywise I think was a lot scarier and acted to me more clown like with his ability to be goofy and funny, and then, turns scary. The newer Pennywise didn’t really capture that element. To me, he was scary, but in a creepy way; not scary for me to be terrified. Although, if I were in any of those situations and I came face-to-face with this version of Pennywise and he was acting as Pennywise, I would probably be just as scared as the kids were. The scariest part for me and the 2017 version was when the slideshow kept going by itself. I liked all the kids and the 2017 adaptation I think better than in the original one, although, the kids and the original one were a lot better than the adults I thought. I agree with you about Eddie; this version of Eddy was a lot funnier than in the 1990s version, and I also liked Richiea lot better in this one than the 1990 version. Other than that, everyone else was great!

I am going to see it this week. Now as far as Stan goes he got the short end of the stick in the novel as well. The novel was set up in a way in which as the Losers were getting their memories back they were able to recall something that led to and them fighting it. Like Bev for instance there is a chapter of that begins with adult Bev on a plane while heading to Derry and she starts remembering an event that happened in her childhood that she had forgotten. There was only one chapter that featured Stan as an adult and it wasn't told from his point of view but rather by his wife's, and in the said chapter he gets a phone call (presumably from Mike) goes and takes a bath. The wife goes up to the bathroom and discovers the door is locked and runs to find a key and finally manages to get into the bathroom and discovers that Stan had slit his wrists. So the reader was never really able to get into Stan's head in the book. His encounter with It is recalled second hand by one of the other Losers. All we learn about Stan through his wife and the other Losers was that he liked bird watching and had a book that catalogued all the birds that he had spotted and that he had become a rather successful accountant serving some very wealthy clients in the Atlanta area. So it would have been hard for the screen writers and producers to really give Stan a proper account as he was just one of the Losers as there is really nothing that he did that really stood out. Ben saved Bev from It in the werewolf form. Bill did the ritual. Bev was quick with the slingshot. Ben in molded the slugs and knew right were the entrance to the sewers was. Richie saved Bill during the second ritual of chud, and Eddie saved Bill and Richie sacrificing himself. There was nothing that was mentioned that Stan did that really stood out that overall helped the group or saved one or more members of the group. In fact unless he actually said something or when he was mentioned standing nearby or next to another member you tend to forget that he was there while reading the book.

Cody Leach the thing that really hurt IT for me was the Georgie death scene. With all the promotional stuff, my imagination just went wild with how they were going to do his death (i knew it would regard his arm) but then after the blatantly bad CGI mouth, it just kind of set a tone of disappointment with me. I could not agree more and said the same thing. What makes a horror character frightening is not seeing them constantly, but how your mind runs away with the character. You dont need to see him a lot to have that fear be present. And I cant stand CGI. it takes so much away from the imagination and creation you get with costume and character design. I mean look at the transition in the Howling from the 1980s, def one of the best werewolf transitions of all time. I agree with you on every point you made and this IT movie was amazing. And yes this version of Eddie was much better than the wimp we got in the 1990 mini series.

Awesome review! The only fear that I thought was dumb was stans fear of the woman in the painting. It looked super cheesy and too many lame CGI effects to the actress playing the woman and took away my fear level of the movie. I do agree way too much CGI in general. Once you see pennywises spinning head more than once it takes away from how effective that could have been. Everything else I absolutely loved and enjoyed!

Like you said it's not scary but it is creepy. Just only one jump scare got me. (projector) Usually I don't like too many jump scares because most of the time they're cheap or relied on too much. But I thought these one's weren't cheap or relied on too much. I just didn't like who they chose to be the one to get the girl. Definitely plan to see it again in the cinema. I agree with most of your review!! I didn't hate Stan as much as you, I did hate his fear. Thought that was dumb too. And, it felt like a lot of his scenes were cut from the film. I liked Pennywise, just thought he should of had more creepy dialog and less CGI. Loved when he was talking to Georgie. Only other way this could of been more satisfying was if it was a limited Netflix series and it could have covered more material and given us more character development of not only the Losers Club, but the bullies and adults, as well. Mike seemed under utilized as well.

@@CodyLeachYT Hopefully, but I'm not sure how. A lot of the aspects of his character were repurposed for Ben... I'm curious as him being a historian was the reason he stayed in the originals. I only hope that they actually do something with his character in the next one instead of, once again, making him an after thought. Also, thanks for taking the time to reply.

I guess I'm just lucky that the CGI does nothing to detract me from the movie. So many people have said "yeah Skarsgard is pretty good but theres too much cgi" and whilst I certainly noticed it and I do prefer practical effects I don't care. I loved what Skarsgard did with the character in his attempts to give it an unnatural vibe. Also I cringed the first time I saw the CGI woman the first time I saw it however came to realize that she is meant to be picture come to life. it was one of the most effective build ups in the movie Even though its only two scenes it is a build up in which Pennywise torments Stan with this fear to the moment of the traumatic attack

I don't feel like Stan was nessecarily cast wrong, I've seen the actor in other things and he's good. I think the problem was they knew Stan doesn't make it through to the end of the story so didn't give him much to work with...which is kind of the opposite of what you should do with a character we all know doesn't make it (especially the way he goes out) so we actually give a crap when that happens/when the other characters talk about it. I felt like Stan and Mike both get done dirty story wise in both adaptations and in some aspects the book
