➤➤Transcript (partial):
The cause of time is really very much like the cause of a ship in the ocean-cause here’s the ship, you see, and it leaves behind it a wake. The wake fades out and that tells us where the ship has been in just the same way as the past and our memory of the past tells us what we have done. But as we go back into the past, and we go back and back to pre-history and we use all kinds of instruments and scientific methods for detecting what happened, we eventually reach a point where all record of the past fades away in just the same way as the wake of a ship. Now the important thing to remember in this illustration is that the wake doesn’t drive the ship any more than the tale wags the dog. Supposing there’s a neurotic, difficult child-one school of thought is to say, “Well bang him about. Beat him up!” And maybe he’ll change. But then they said, “Oh, no. That’s not fair to the child to beat him up because it was his parents. They didn’t bring him up properly. And so then they say, “Well, punish the parents.” Well the parents say, “Excuse me, but our parents were neurotic too. And they brought us up badly so we couldn’t help what we did.” And so, since the grandparents are dead we can’t get at them. And in any case, supposing we could, we would pass the whole blame back to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. And they say they started all this mess. But then Eve would say, “No! The serpent tempted me and I did eat and it was the serpent’s fault!” So you see, if you insist on being moved, being determined by the past, that’s your game. But the fact of the matter is it all starts right now. But we like to establish our connectivity with the past because that gives other people the impression that we’re sane. If you ask me, then, why am I talking? Well I could say, I’m making a living this way, or I have a message that I want to get across to you. But that’s not the reason. I’m talking for the same reason that birds sing, and for the same reason that the stars shine, is, I dig it. Why do you dig it? Well, I could go on answering all sorts of questions about human motivation and psychology but they wouldn’t explain a thing, because explaining things by the past is really a refusal to explain them at all!

“You are not defined by your past, or even driven by it, just as a ship is not defined by the wake it leaves behind. Reorient your mind to be free from past events in order to define yourself by what you’re doing in the present. Your future begins in the now.”

This present moment is all we really have, we don't define ourselves for what we've done in the past but for who we are today and the choices we make today, that's all that really matters. Believe in what you can be ♡

Although hard to pinpoint at first, what Alan says here is extremely important. He’s saying that we normally judge ourselves based on what we have or haven’t done in the past, when really all the past is is an explanation as to how we’ve ended up where we currently are. In this sense, if we always simply judge ourselves based on where we are right now instead, we will always be liberated from the past by not blaming it. Blaming our past selves is an excuse to not fix something in the present. We should be enjoying our time on the boat, rather than always swimming behind in the wake of it. Once we are back on the boat and behind the wheel, we can then redirect the appropriate course that is currently required. That is why I found this lesson funny, because Alan isn’t just saying to live in the now, he’s saying that taking accountability for your actions and for your life is what allows you to truly live in the present moment. A boat can’t dwell in the wakes of its past, and a dog doesn’t care about the future. Don’t think, just do - because a boat just drives, and a dog just wags it’s tail :)

My favorite Alan Watts' video - he articulates in just over 5 minutes what some people have written entire books to explain! Thank you, Word to the Wise! Note to WTTW: In the closed captions at the beginning of the video, it should read: "The course of time is really very much like the course of a ship in the ocean". You have the word "cause" instead of "course". Other than that, a fine job! Thanks again!

I just got amazing revelation from that. It seems when you look at it, that we become what people expect of us. For example, you may be occasionally helpful to a certain person but not to others. It becomes very easy to remain helpful to that person because that's what they've come to expect, it's who they think you are and for some reason we go with it. Just like someone has your name wrong and call you Neil instead of Nick. You don't change or correct them you just allow it because you hardly interact with them. Now there are three you. One is personified as a more than average helpful person, another is someone that looks like you but is called by another name and God knows how many more people we become to different people. But behind all that ridiculousness, is a being that is very real and very true and very present. Who is it

@WordToTheWise, its so interesting that when you upload another video portraying a 'different' speaker as a collective, we cannot break the thousand mark for likes and support. However, when its Jordan Peterson lol ... For me video content like this differentiates and shows the polarizing effect on those who merely live by their Persona and those who actually work on incorporating their Shadow. I'm a huge advocate for Jordan Peterson I think what he is doing is remarkable and it is needed now more than ever, but more people should actually take on what he says and read the different educators he recommends. Unarticulated action is just as important as articulated knowledge. Anyway, Happy New Year to all connected to this channel.
