A wee tip , don’t turn it off by using the decompression lever as that fucks up the valve gear . The ph petter has a stop lever just below the injection pump . Sometimes it can’t be reached . The best way to stop it is by just shoving the rack on the pump

Never stop these engines using the decompressor lever, it knackers the valves/seat up! Always cut of the fuel using the rack lever on the injector pump.

When I was 10 (in 1974) my friend and I visited a building site at night and came across a dumper truck very similar to this. We managed to start it and the thing took off like a bullet. We ran away and heard this almighty bang away in the distance. We never knew where it ended up. I've always been fascinated by construction vehicles ever since. Also, I never did anything like that again.

I've got a Johnson dumper with the same PH1 engine. I was told you shouldn't stop the engine with the decompressor, push the fuel rack towards the front of the dumper to stop it. When starting from cold do you move the brass stop on the other end of the fuel rack so the rack can move fully backwards and allow more fuel for starting? I have found filters etc available. Great engines. Make sure the bolts holding the cylinder barrel on are tight. They have a habit of working loose and breaking the barrel.

I’ve always understood that it’s detrimental to the valve gear to use the decompression device to stop a diesel engine it also leaves the fuel rack wide open, risking flooding the engine with fuel - that’s why it smokes black when you knock the decompression lever down. Move the fuel rack to the no fuel position to stop. There should also be a little catch device, like a small cam which you can lift up, which allows the fuel rack to travel further than the normal maximum fuel position to allow excess fuel for easier starting. The catch returns to its normal position as the engine runs up to speed . . . .

I once worked with a Bobcat Skid-Steer Loader. The engine was so worn-out that after starting it, it ran backwards (which I didn't noticed), pushing the handles forward (normally makes it run forward) made it move in reverse with a jump because the (unexpected direction of) movement made me push the handles even harder. Quite dangerous, luckily there was no one standing behind the machine !
@@allistairc123 In case of a motorbike (two or four stroke engine) the effect is probably due to ignition timing issues (to close behind, or even before, top dead centre). But the Bobcat had a Diesel engine, and it ran sometimes one way, sometimes the other 😵 ❗
