It's wild to see just how quickly NYC fell apart. Just in 2018/2019 we were talking about how NYC's violent crime had fallen so low, that it was rivaling London. Which, at the surface doesn't sound great, but compared to American cities, that was a hell of an achievement. Now, it's skyrocketed back 20 years.

The National Guard is only at 2 stations. The police are only huddled in certain stations chatting and on their phones. It’s all optics and there is no way I would give away my civil liberties for the dog and pony show. Maybe we should implement policies that punish criminals.
@bellaluna1535
@bellaluna1535 2 ай бұрын
Hey, I agree. Years ago they had those guards there in NYC for about three weeks, then all of a sudden you didn't hear about them anymore. People should take a look at the actual MTA subway map to see how massive the system is. Not possible to keep guards at ALL stations, and the guards are only position at the tourist areas, like Times Square. And there is usually one or two guards standing there, with their back turned, on their cellphone.

@AiyvenConnorno but it makes ppl more tense so everyday situations that can be solved reasonably end up causing more chaos. You’re assuming any of these guards know anything about conflict de escalation on such a large scale in a metric public train system whilst already being outstretched. This can go wrong scarily easily so it’s right to acknowledge how if it’s more safety theatre than actual protection. Having a gun doesn’t make a lot of ppl feel safe since there’s no gurantee that you won’t be shot if shit goes down that has nothing to do with you Not just dudes with guns. ok so as an outside observer who has a transit system with a high rate of crime, there's 2 big problems. 1) the system doesn't work because like stated in the video it's a band-aid, 2) to solve a problem like this it takes time, effort, funds and support none of which NYC has. Armed guards and the national guard are supposed to be a band-aid, it's there to temporarily stop the bleeding or in this cause stanch the crime problem, it has has increased security help and is slowing down crime simply because the process to commit a random act of violence takes you 5 minutes more to get to the platform with a bag check. It is not a long term solution but it is something that can quickly be done to raise public moral. The problem comes with the system itself, homelessness, violent acts and gang related activity need to be pulled up from the root but that takes, cooperation, funding and time which again NYC doesn't have. in order to solve just homelessness you have to stop the influx of substance abuse, get those causing problem rehabilitated (which can sometimes be the hardest part), fix your economy so that there's work for those people to earn money, set up public programs to aid their transition and then after all of that hope that the global economy doesn't dip again. So in short NYC has taken the easy option (hopefully to spend more time solving the actually problems but who are we kidding) to stop crimes in subways by using the national guard rather then go on a lengthy and costly effort to solve the problem. Is it good? no but could anyone do better is the question?

How ever limiting the patrol areas, is just signs for failure. A show of force is good, but also bad, the pros and cons r more then just basic unrest. But baseline this program is minimally effective in regards to the social and environmental (cleanliness, smaller crime, cramped quarters, ect.) issues of the area.

@@BladeFitAcademy It is a temporary solution to a long term issue, but it works, because, as was stated in the video, illegal firearm confiscation increased by 96% since 2019 and it's actually preventing people from getting robbed and/or killed. I do agree that they need to work more on solving the root problems, but the reality is this temporary measure is not hurting anyone other than criminals. I don't think it'll become the norm, but the possibility of the state going to war against crime will definitely be ingrained in criminals' minds as a result of this, so it plays a big psychological role as well.

I moved back home from NYC after graduating college, just about 6 months before covid and quarantine happened. I was heartbroken at the time- I just couldn’t afford to stay in NYC and chase my dreams anymore, so I returned home defeated with my tail between my legs. A few years later I see the complete collapse and mess that has become of the city that I was so in love with at the time…I’ll call it a blessing in disguise in retrospect. I visited last December and was shocked at how drastically different it felt only a few years later. A much darker, scarier energy all around the city. Where before I always felt protected by the bustling public of NYC, I now felt on edge and threatened, even during the day.

I’ve been in NYC in September last year. And being myself Portuguese I found odd the a Mount of security and Police around city and places. But to be quite honest I fell very safe so as a tourist I cannot complain, anyway I understand the frustration of being local and have to be checked twice a day…

A couple of days ago a dude was shot on the train in NYC. He started a fight with someone after yelling at the guy for no reason and then pulled out a gun, and the guy he started a fight with turned the gun against this dude.

Yeah and they were no troopers there. I took a train recently and there was a fight between a homeless guy and a aggressive man, that actually started the whole fight. His girlfriend tried to calm him down but he was still going, the homeless guy was just minding his business. It’s really weird, cause these arguments literally start from nothing and it’s scary.

This. NY is defined by bust cycles as much as boom cycles. This is as serious a problem as they've ever been in.
@CaptRR
@CaptRR 2 ай бұрын
The problem is it’s in a death spiral. Crime keeps rising, businesses are leaving, and yet still there is not enough houses. However, due to political polarization, and the fact that NYC has driven out everyone who would vote differently and help pull them out of office this spiral. So as anyone who even thinks to the right of Mao is driven out and only left wingers are left, then the policies get more and more left, and without that counter, things just get worse and worse .
