So I can speak to this from experience! On the "Exercise/diet/etc cures depression", it CAN help sometimes. The problem that some people face, myself included, is that often times your body/brain won't let you. When you're struggling to pull the sheets off of you and pull clothes onto you, you can't exactly go out and jog for three miles. When you're having to use all of your energy just to survive, you don't have the extra energy to exercise or plan your nutrition. That's why it can be such a painful cycle to get stuck in without someone else to help pull you out of it. Changing my diet helped a ton, but I couldn't fix my diet until after therapy helped me deal with enough issues that I could use my brain power for meal planning instead of my anxiety disorder taking all of it to worry about every single thing in my life. Exercise is helping now, but I had to fix my sleeping habits before I had the energy to exercise. Fixing my sleeping habits required me to, again, get my anxiety in order so I could actually sleep at night. Some of it was learning how to not spiral into a fear filled mess, some of it was as simple as "play some music while you're sleeping so you don't hear every sound in the house and worry about what it means". Exercise, sleep, and a good diet do help, but it doesn't undo 10 years of living with a violet person who pulled a knife on your mom and tried to throw her down the stairs.
