Snyder is an incredibly talented music video director that keeps trying to make movies. If he'd just stop trying to write and story break these things himself and just directed scripts by actual writers he could probably make some pretty great projects.

If I were a screenwriter, I don't know if I'd trust him with any intimate or vulnerable moments in my script. Watchmen was meant to be a somber look at heroes as a profession with any action being deliberately short and non-flashy. Snyder turned it into an orgy of highly stylized slow motion violence while glorifying characters meant to be creepy losers or outright sociopathic criminals.

He says the studio forced him to make changes and he gets to show his ideas more fully in the Director's cut. I would have to see that version, first. I really enjoyed his Justice league director's cut, after the awful theatrical version.

@@bl8388 he didn't showed his ideas? He just need to cut out all the unnecessary slow-motions which make the cuts about 1/4-1/3 longer and take the time for good storytelling and character development. But this wont save the movie from all the stupid things that are already in.

The ONE aspect of this film that I genuinely like: I really appreciate that Charlie Hunnam's character is introduced as a good-for-nothing scoundrel who's only in it for himself - and then it turns out that he genuinely *IS* just a good-for-nothing scoundrel who's only in it for himself! No heart of gold hiding underneath his mercenary exterior, just a legit amoral guy who's happy to sell out his companions for his own benefit. The fact that he's handsome and charming doesn't mean he's trustworthy - which is a nice subversion from the dozens of stories where his type of character invariably winds up becoming a selfless, helpful true believer in the greater good. :) But yeah, aside from that part, this movie's a dumpster fire.

@@jinxie712 But even Lando was betraying them for the good of his own community, his own people, out of fear of what Vader would do to them - so there was still a moral code at play, deep down. Hunnam's character gets to be genuinely selfish, opportunistic, and lacking much empathy for others. And that's a nice change of pace.

I liked to that they show the main character falling for his charm. But unlike Han Solo, he's just actually a scoundrel you can't trust. It's nice to see since I feel like media has so many messages about bad boys being attractive and working out. In reality these kinds of guys often hurt women.

I mean, if we’re talking about Star Wars and Seven Samurai, it should be noted that The Mandalorian managed to do a pretty solid take on the story in just over half an hour (S1E4). But here’s the thing: In an alternative universe where the original Star Wars bombed in theaters - so that it never became a franchise - that one movie is still a complete story with a beginning, middle, and - most importantly - an end: the bad guy’s base is destroyed; Tarkin is dead; the princess is rescued; the scoundrel learns there’s more to life than money; and the simple farmer stops whining about his lot in life and manages to save the day. Sure, there are loose threads (like Vader surviving), but you don’t _need_ those to be explored in order for that first film to be satisfying. This is the same mistake Zack Snyder made with the DCEU: building a franchise requires more than the “building a franchise” part; each of the individual components have to be compelling in their own right. (This is also why the MCU has fallen off; each piece of content has increasingly become little more than an ad for the next piece of content.)

I guess my main question is: "Why these specific warriors?" Like, why is the Griffon riding guy absolutely necessary and indespensible from the team? What does he add that noone else in the universe can add? And why is that specific addition something that is worth the time spent doing his companion quest? Example: Oceans 11 needed all of the characters because each had a specific talent and each talent was 100% necessary for the specific heist they were performing. I don't need to know the backstory of each character, because I know a few that I can latch onto. But every character should have a unique personality and a unique, indispensable job.

I think the biggest problem with this movie is the pacing and Zach Snyders basic misconception on how that works. I know he's riffing on the Seven Samuari, Magnificent Seven, and a dozen other movies. In every other movie I can think of it takes thirty minutes to form the seven and the rest of the movie is plot, exposition, getting the village ready, and all of that. Even then if you look at the original Magnificent Seven and compare the scene where they recruit Charles Bronson and in Rebel Moon whenre they recruit Staz Nair. They are both doing chores on a farm for money. If takes five minutes to recruit Bronson and you get tons of character about how much he gets typically gets paid and how he's so down on his luck taht teh small amount they're offering is worth is time.Nair spends way more time on screen and we get very little character building. All I know about him is that he's the Navi alagory.

I see a few basic ways of connecting these characters so that it is a coherent plot. 1) The evil general should have either been the official governor of this moon, OR hiding resources and garrisons on the moon because he was planning to backstab the Emperor. Anything that was a more substantial and specific reason for him to care at all about what happens in this region. 2) The prince working as a slave should have been the previous regent of the moon. "Return of the king" is an actual plot point; rescuing some guy just because, isn't. 3) The drunk general could have been from THIS prince's kingsguard. Either that, or his Big Disgrace should be related to the death of the White Lantern Princess. Who cares about whatever battle he lost if it has nothing to do with the big myth or the specific story? Nemesis is just a Jedi expy, so what she doesn't really matter. She's a ronin. Myeh. Gamora's quest should be specific: to regain the power of THIS moon from THIS imperial officer.

They took every single SciFi/Fantasy trope/cliche and mashed them all together trying to make them all work but instead they just got.... mush. Plus I can't stand the guy that played the main evil character so that probably didn't help my perception of the movie at all. It's pretty sad, like you continually pointed out the visuals/special effects were pretty good. Most of the acting was okay, but the writing/story just killed it. Honestly I don't think I'm even going to bother watching Part 2

the first 20-30min I enjoyed, but then it all went downhill for me...People saying "oh wait for the directors cut", is nonsense imo. I'm sure it will be better, but why can't you just make a good film the first time around?

I'm not sure it will be better. I understand why BvS was better, because of studio interference, and the scenes were chopped short. But this had the slowest pacing and so much unnecessary slomo that dragged the movie to a crawl! He WASTED so much time; how can giving him another hour help?

This movie is literally 7 samuria, the anime with Star Wars coat of paint. With a lot less character development

I said when the movie came out that it could have been 20/30 minutes shorter without the Slow-Mo in it.... and even then it would be too long and too uninteresting. Snyder apparently wants to make 6 Rebel Moon movies in total. Can't see him getting a 3rd one TBH.

It is clearly a Star Wars Pitch, but I feel notes of Dune and Warhammer 40K too. I was interested in the world. this film was... ok. I liked it, but... yeah. and every single character is as SPECIMEN.

it was a Star Wars pitch, but they turned him down. which goes to prove Kathleen Kennedy doesn't get everything wrong.

@@christophermarabella5683 More time only helps if you use the time wisely. He wasted SOO much time in these movies, forgive me if I don't want even more bad pacing. Also, not all of his Directors Cuts are better than the original, just a few of his comic book ones. And even then, ZSJL wasn't really a "director's cut" as much as a completely different movie. Most decades-removed remakes have more in common with their originals than Justice League did. The directors cuts that are the best are Zack Snyder fixing studio interference (like BvS) but that doesn't apply here because Netflix let him do whatever he wanted. The only reason he's getting a director's cut is because they saw how much people watch ZSJL on MAX and they are doing this to double dip! "Don't cancel Netflix because the director's cut is coming in just a couple months." No thank you!

@@christophermarabella5683 Zack basically had full creative control over this whole thing and still needed to make a "Director's Cut" ??

This movie would have been a great part 2. Or rewritten to give more character than world building. And the world building was lacking.

Many thanks to Jay & Adam! 🌙 The only thing I loved about this movie was the scene in which 'Sam' (portrayed by the lovely Charlotte Maggi) put the crown of flowers onto 'Jimmy' (voiced by Anthony Hopkins). The rest of it, aside from some lovely visuals, really didn't impact me. I will watch the second part, but it would take a lot to win me over. I guess I'm just not a huge fan of Zack Snyder. Only a couple of his works have appealed to me. Apparently, some people enjoy what he offers.

The aesthetic is much more in line with the Warhammer 40K universe, and I wonder if word that Cavill is working on this franchise inspired them to make it look similar.

Should check out Slo Mo Guys Zack Snyder. About a 50 min interview/interaction. He explains the camera angles. As well as how they released the pg-13 version first. And the R version comes this fall. Only reason I watched the 1st one, so I can see the difference. The supposedly WAY gorier angle compilation.
