Happy Birthday, everyone! 🥳 Sincerely, thank you so very much for watching. I started this channel really to just have a running catalog of my collection, but you all have turned it into a party and we hope you're having as much fun as we are. Cheers! What is the oldest whiskey YOU have tried and how was it?

I'm still fairly new to whiskey but for my last birthday I sprang for a bottle of Redbreast Single Pot Still 12 year. Not crazy high priced but a big step up from normal fare. I'm still learning how to pick out the different scents and flavors but I do know that I have enjoyed it so far. I'm currently making my way through some Roe & Co and I'm really enjoying that one. Happy Birthday from a fellow Minnesotan. Tell your wife Kaelyn, Kale In...Just Kyle that I understood what she meant about the drive by sniff and it made me laugh out loud.

I favor bourbon more so now days. But If I want scotch, JW Blue does the trick. And for something simpler , Jamason's. Cheers

Redbreast 27 is really good. Got to try it once. Not worth the 1k they are asking now but when it was 500, i would consider getting it.

Happy Birthday! You twos are awesome. Oldest whisky I’ve had was a pour of 40yr Port Ellen at a friend’s house. I wish that bottle was mine.

I was at a fancy hotel bar about 15 years ago with friends and my brother and I saw a 25yr old Macallan on the shelf. I'd just had a pour of 18 year Johnnie Walker the weekend before at a restaurant for like, $15 and thought, "how expensive could that 25yr old be?" I bought 3 pours, one each for me, my brother, and a friend. My other two buddies were drinking light beers, and we had some too. We thought the whisky was really good. Anyway, after a few beers, the check comes, my friend looks at it, starts laughing hysterically, and throws it in my face. "You're paying that tab!" he says. Turns out the Macallan 25 was $110 a glass.

Not too long ago, I saw Macallan 25-year at a bar for $400 for a 2-ounce pour. I'm not particularly impressed with the 12-year, so I'm not going to blow my money on the 25-year, especially when I can get an entire bottle of anCnoc 24-year for well under $400 - and unlike Macallan, it isn't chill filtered. Macallan is overpriced, and its target audience is rich people who are looking for status symbols.

@@heatherharrison264I couldn't agree more! I'm always looking integrity presentation in every bottle I buy now (flavor first, of course). But that story I shared was a lifetime ago and at the beginning of my "whisky journey." There are so many great distilleries offering better quality at better prices.

@@otbwhiskey The bottle was opened on my birthday about 11 years ago. It is long gone. It was a Master of Malt secret bottling (i.e. undisclosed speyside distillery). After much research, I believe it was Mortloch. From what I remember it was very smooth, fruity, light, vanilla, a hint of spice and citrus. Surprisingly it wasn't too oaky and it had a long finish.

I think if you are getting any floral or possibly soapy notes, this could be a late 80s Jim McEwan Bowmore. Also do a search on Islay Violets 33 and Peats Beast 34. I’m pretty sure the Islay Violets is also cognac matured and that is definitely a late 80s Bowmore.

HBD yall! I think I lean more towards younger peated scotch for its punch of flavor. Octomore is more my preferred style.

I tried a few of the less expensive Total Wine store brand Scotch from mini-bottles a while back. I found the quality to be highly variable. Most were watered down to 40% ABV, which didn't help, but the Glen Fohdry line is bottled at higher strength, and I found it to be better. I must admit that I have been tempted by the bottles that have 30+ age statements at a reasonable price. I wish there was more information on their provenance, but for this one, Caol Ila would be a likely suspect. Their whisky seems to be widely used by independent bottlers and blenders, which is a good thing, since their official bottlings aren't very well regarded, but it is a malt of good character when it is handled properly. (I have a Cadenhead Caol Ila 10-year that is wonderful.) I just did a quick search for reviews, and there aren't many. One reviewer who went into some detail thought that it might be Bowmore due to the flavor profile. Bowmore is another that isn't treated well in the official bottlings but might turn out well if handled properly by independent bottlers. I wonder if 44% ABV is cask strength for this whisky. At this strength, it probably is chill filtered, unfortunately. In Scotland, the alcohol content drops with age, and barrels aged for a very long time are at risk of dropping below the 40% minimum. Maybe I should blow some money on this. It certainly sounds interesting. I just looked it up, and it is available for $300 at the Total Wine closest to me. That is a great price for a 33-year age statement if the quality is there to back it up. So far, the oldest whisky I've had is 25 years. It is a Douglas Laing's Old Particular Glen Grant. It is great stuff; it has the flavorful, malty character of Glen Grant without the over-filtering that takes place in the official bottlings. I also have a bottle of anCnoc 24-year. It's a wonderful Sherry bomb, and it is a great reasonably priced alternative to Macallan, which has become ridiculously overpriced. I would love to taste anCnoc 24 next to Macallan 25, but it will never happen unless someone else offers to pay for the Macallan because I'll never pay the exorbitant price for it, especially when I strongly suspect that anCnoc 24 will be better. The oldest spirit I've had is an Armagnac. It is Darroze 1975 vintage, with an age statement of 47 years. It has a bit of dry, tannic wood and is showing its age, but I'm amazed at how much intense flavor remains in something this old. I would like to get one that is about 10-15 years younger, as I think 47 years is perhaps a little too old. Well aged Armagnac is a bargain compared to whisky. Anyone who wants to try a ridiculously old spirit without having to pay thousands of dollars should seek it out.
