I was a Deputy Sheriff for 27 years, a SWAT commander and firearms instructor. My everyday duty weapon was a Glock G20 10mm, but my off duty or EDC ia a Glock G31 .357sig. I use Buffalo Bore 125gr solid copper hollow points, i think its a barnes projectile. They perform excellent in every type of barrier that it was tested against. Wishing you and all the viewers a Merry Christmas.

The .357 Sig is an excellent cartridge. The Texas DPS had many failures to stop using the issued Sig Sauer P220. They tried different ammunition to no avail. The .357 Sig was making a name for itself in law enforcement. It was like having the old .357 Magnum revolvers in a semiautomatic pistol.

@@ryantogo8359 The caveat being "the same barrel length." How long does a semi-auto barrel have to be to equal a revolver barrel? They are measured differently and a revolver runs about a 10% loss in barrel gap. Bullet travel length would probably be the closest way to measure. The .357magnum starts to show it's capabilities when you run heavier bullets like the 158grain, which in the original quoted design ran over 1500 fps in 8-3/8" barrel, that's over 800 ft-lb energy.

.357 Sig is always impressive, just barely exiting the first block is picture perfect. The .357 Sig bullets are actually designed to operate at that high velocity they didnt just shove a 9mm luger bullet in there like they do with .40 S&W and .45 ACP in 10mm in .45 Super. Thats why you see so much watered down 10mm, the bullets they use will over expand under penetrating or shed its petals off causing the core to over penetrate otherwise. XTP bullets, as they expand so little at their rated velocities, do well at true 10mm and even .460 Rowland velocity, but few other JHP designs will.

These are personal defense/LE rounds. They are loaded to penetrate 15" +/- 2" not to be the most powerful or to penetrate more or less than the goal of 15". The factory adjust the velocity to achieve this goal with this lot of bullets and do not care about the power as much as being consistent in the penetration, accuracy and expansion goals.

Its around 1380-1390 fps out of my 6 inch KKM barrel making about 777 ft/lbs. I have a lot of respect for the .357 sig, and I really believe its a true man-stopper-as it can be a very energetic round-but it falls short of true 10mm power in at least 1 regard, true full power 10mm can handle the heavier projectiles better. Hey Tools, not surprised the 357sig did better..but the 10mm is still my favorite regardless. Glock 40 packs a wallop💥💥💥 Great test, keep up the good work Sir! 👍👍👊🎄☃️

Merry Christmas Tools to you and Ms. Tools. I believe your test is the first time that the HST has under impressed me. I generally only carry my 10mm's when I'm visiting National parks or forests. I carry Buffalo Bore 200gr. I have no intention of being a bear burger. These 10mm's expanded pretty good in your G20, but did you notice how shallow they expanded? The petals peeled back really well but they didn't seem to go very far down the base of the bullet. I carry HST's for my 2 legged defense loads. I just got through testing HST's in my short barrelled carry pistols (9mm, .40, and .45acp). They performed excellently as usual. I only have one block of gel and back it up with water jugs. Everytime I melt and reform the block, I really appreciate how hard you work for us. Thanks again. Back to my point, I'm wondering how good that 10mm would perform in the 3.78" and 3.8" barrels of these shorter barrels. Thanks again for this test

I know the 357 sig had a little more energy (barely) and the 10mm isn't quite moving full power speeds but it's really not that far off like most companies.. still a really good load and if you use it in a longer barrel like i do it probably will hit those full power 10mm speeds.. i love HST's regardless of caliber.. and the bullet design makes up for the 100-120 fps its lacking in velocity.. a longer barrel makes up for it too

Perhaps the best thing about .357 Sig is you get to be “above” the caliber debate between 9 and .45. Sounds like you’re gonna need to buy a Glock 32 for a late Christmas present. If you can find an Sig P239 in . 357 Sig, it’s a nice carry option too. Thanks for the video!

Another excellent video. I am glad to see you finally showing interest in 357 sig. it is one of the most underrated cartridges. I wanted to point out something also about performance and power vs the overrated value of Foot pounds energy. This video was the perfect example of how velocity trumps caliber. You can clearly see that the 357 performed better than the 10mm and despite the fact that they were virtually tied in the foot pounds, the performance was clearly not equal. There is a simple math formula to rate power for cartridges that is more accurate in terms of real world performance. It also applies common sense as to bullet weight: it assumes that the bullet weight is within acceptable range for calibur in order to achieve acceptable penetration. Take the calibur x the velocity then divide by .1 to get a scale value 1-10. Example: .355 x 1450= 505.9 x .1= 50.6 357 sig. .401 x 1150= 461.1 x .1= 46.1 10mm. This is pretty much the difference we see in the ballistics Gel.

I totally agree about the 10mm velocity. Perhaps, the thinking on the velocity is that this is intended for personal protection, so they didn't want more penetration? I don't know. But both did great as you say. Thanks for another great review and Merry Christmas!

After years of watching your videos and learning what I have from them, I run HST in everything I have that they make a round for. Not to say it's the only good round out there, but I do believe the HST is the best performer across all calibers as where some companies rounds will perform great in one caliber and not so great in another caliber. They really have their stuff figured out.

I think both of those did really well. Impressive. I can’t recall a bad showing from HST. It would be a hard choice but I think I got to go with the 10mm even though I agree that the 357 might have had a better showing. I prefer the bigger round. My standard carry is the Colt 1911 3.5 inch with 45 +p HST. If I want something a little smaller, it’s the p30sk with 9mm +p HST. My wife carry’s the p365 9mm +p HST.
