Fun story - the day after watching this video I went to the range with a buddy. I’m a barely proficient pistol shot so was working on fundamentals with a buddy. We were taking a short break after hanging new targets and talked about this video. The range went hot and I was going to take a controlled shot - so I was raising the pistol and yelled “COMMUNISM IS BAD” and took a shot and miraculously took a perfect dead center shot on the target. I’m now convinced those words are magic! I wish I could post a pic of the target!

A 45 ACP "Bear Load" has capacity of being significantly more capable than a 10mm Auto "Bear Load." Greater amount of bullet weight for similar velocities, larger meplat, heavier bullet need not be seated deeper with attendant over-pressure concerns.

@@LibertysetsquareJackalso will add underwood offers a 200gr bear defense round for both calibers . 10mm has significant more velocity and muzzle energy . I’m guessing you’re referring to someone’s “custom” bear load , that’s probably over pressured and possibly beyond safe specs . We’re talking about a less aerodynamic projectile in the same weight class but is 5.06 mm wider . Under2/10 of an inch but is also a much different shape and is seated completely different . The misconception here is that the 45 is gonna leave a larger wound channel . It will also under penetrate and with a 1200 lb apex predator , if it expands early “not enough speed so more often than not that’s the case “ , you’ll be on the menu for North Americas deadliest animal .
@LibertysetsquareJack
@LibertysetsquareJack 2 ай бұрын
@@dennismurray4088 It's not about leaving a bigger wound channel, but about the tendency of the bullet to overturn itself, be deflected, and lose momentum. All three contribute to diminished penetration. Velocity is only one factor in penetration, and, especially at practical handgun velocities, is largely insignificant. In other words, we aren't talking the difference between 800 fps and 2,300 fps, pistol and rifle, respectively, or between a 600 fps pistol round and a 1,300 fps pistol round. When we're talking between, say, 1,150 fps for one pistol round, and 950 fps for another pistol round, both velocities factor essentially identically when it comes to penetrative potential into animals. What is more significant are the other factors aforementioned: which bullet will have a greater tendency to overturn itself, have less momentum, and be deflected from striking differential material in the body, e.g. glancing on a bone. With those three considerations, bullets with larger meplats, sharper meplats, more "square" bullet profile (ogive), are "over square" in weight:caliber ratio, and just weigh more overall, will tend to penetrate both 1) more deeply initially, and 2) be less likely to deflect and/or tumble, i.e. maintain a more straight terminal path, which means deeper penetration over time within the animal. If favorable characteristics of pistol bullet P are found over another, Q, in these areas, P will have deeper and more consistent penetration, even if Q is moving up to several hundred feet-per-second faster. That's why the old timers, such as John Pondoro Taylor, accounted for caliber when evaluating cartridges for animals, in addition to bullet weight and velocity. Muzzle energy equations only take bullet weight and velocity into factor, and are then heavily biased towards velocity, because the equation has the square of such. This makes cartridges such as 10mm Auto look superior to others, but without context and the actual terminal behavior of the bullet. So take two premier "dangerous game" loads from the same manufacturer, Buffalo Bore, as example: 10mm Auto "Heavy 10mm Outdoorsman," and the 45 ACP "Heavy 45 +P Outdoorsman." In terms of muzzle energy, the 10mm Auto loading sees a 220 grain bullet developing 1,175 fps out of a Colt Delta Elite with a 5" barrel, yielding ~674 ft./lbs. The 45 ACP load sees a 255 grain bullet developing 960 fps out of a Colt Gold Cup with a 5" barrel, yielding ~522 ft./lbs. So the 10mm Auto loading is 152 ft./lbs., or just over 29%, more powerful. Looking to the Taylor Knockout factor (TKO) however, we get different evaluation. TKO is [bullet weight in grains × velocity × caliber] divided by 7,000. This yields a TKO of 14.77 for the 10mm Auto load, but 15.81 for the 45 ACP. The 45 in this equation is a clear and entire ordinal higher. Comparisons only get more lopsided when evaluating the very high velocity 10mm Auto cartridges many people posture as specifically for large animal defense, such as those using the solid copper (SC) or "mono metal" bullets. The high velocities are obtained with very light bullets, such as a 115 grain SC bullet going 1,700 fps. That yields an impressive 738 ft./lbs. However, that's only 11.17 on the TKO scale, far less than the 15 to 16 of 45 loads. Even old-school 45 ACP from 1905 (230 grains at 830 fps) yields a TKO of 12.33. Again, the reason weight, caliber and weight:caliber were accounted in the old days, and still should be today, is because bullets can do things that negate penetration, irrespective of relatively higher velocity. One of those things is the tendency for the rear of the bullet to "overtake" the front of the bullet, particularly if the bullet is heavier at the base, resulting in tumbling or at least veering from a straight path, both of which cut penetration depth. Another is deflection, which is where large meplat bullets and "square" ("short and fat") have an advantage over round nose and smaller meplat bullets, or bullets that are relatively "under square" ("skinnier"). Ironically enough, higher velocities can also exacerbate these tendencies, such as producing tumbling earlier or deflecting to a larger proportion of vector. Autoloading pistols are already at a disadvantage relative to revolvers in these regards because cartridge OAL must necessarily be shorter per given caliber, dictated by magazine dimensions and action lengths. Autoloaders must also reliably feed over a ramp of some type, and headspace differently than revolvers, meaning that bullet profiles are accordingly less able to be truncated, have less sharp meplats, and must taper sharper from base to nose, more akin to a RN, as opposed to a true SWC or FP profile. The advantage of something such as 45 ACP versus 10mm Auto, is that, within these and other limitations of the autoloading design, the 45 can have a relatively large meplat, less taper to the profile, and be heavier for caliber at acceptable pressures, relative to the 10mm, because the 45 ACP cartridge is designed to sit heavier bullets at lower pressures and is a clear five (5) calibers bigger, meaning larger diameter and ~ 27% greater circular area, yet is not considerably longer. So a heavier, broader, "over square" bullet at functionally similar (i.e. adequate) velocities, and with more meplat and ogive potential. Again, not as much potential in absolute terms as a cartridge designed for a revolver or lever action, but relatively speaking, as an autoloading pistol cartridge, more than the 10mm Auto. And the overall dimension of the pistol is not too disimilar either. It's not like we're talking about a .357 Desert Eagle or something. A Glock 21 still has 13+1 capacity as standard, for example, and with a "normal" sized frame. So I think the mystical or magical aura surrounding 10mm Auto pistols is overblown. Regardless, you went on in your comment to talk about expansion, and in the context of '1,200 pound apex predators.' Really though, it is kinda silly to be talking about bullet expansion potential from pistols, especially from autoloader pistol cartridges, and within the context of taking on large animals, let alone those c. 1,200 pounds. It is going to require several feet worth of straight-line penetration to serve as defense against such animals, and at pistol velocities especially, this means expanding bullets are not ideal at all. Bullets should be made for such purposes so as to have minimal deformation, and maximum weight for caliber at an adequate velocity. A full powered rifle or a shotgun with slugs is really what is in order for such situations, and the pistol is a sidearm. The danger with 10mm Auto pistols is that people are often treating them as a sort of primary weapon against large, dangerous animals, with magical properties. The mono-metal bullets for 10mm Auto in particular seem to have magical qualities ascribed to them, by virtue of being shot out of 10mm Auto pistols, "because velocity and muzzle energy." The idea seems to be that they combine hard bullet material and high velocity, for penetration, with "expansion"-esque terminal performance because of "fluid energy transfer" or whatever, from the fluted design. In reality, these bullets attain higher velocities with the trade off of very light bullet weight, i.e. 115 to 135 grains. On the other side of the coin, the heavier mono-metal bullets move much slower, e.g. a 190 grain 10mm Auto mono-metal is going to be going only 1,100 fps out of a typical (4.5/4.6") barrel, not 1,400, or 1,500, or 1,600+ fps like people want to think. The mono-metals actually will develop less velocity per a given weight because they must be seated deeper relative to a lead bullet (lead is more dense) to stay within OAL (which gets back to the limitations with autoloaders), which is largely why the very fast mono-metals in 10mm Auto are so small (c. 120 grains). Anyway, in both cases, whether tiny and fast or "heavy" (i.e. still light in real terms) and much slower, it apparently escapes people's attention that the "fluid transfer mechanism" is also going to impart force onto the bullet. In other words, there is reaction to every action: people are so in awe of the idea of the fluted bullet "transferring energy into the surrounding tissue" that they forget that the bullet is having a resultant force acting on it too. There is no such thing as free energy. In simple terms, it means the bullet is bleeding out energy and, thus, penetration potential once inside the animal. To get a given mono-metal-fluted to penetrate deeply, velocity must indeed be very high. But again, given the inherent limitations of the autoloading pistol cartridge dimension, that means very light bullets, which are then marginal in terms of all the other factors mentioned so far. So what exactly is all the excitement about? Beats me. I guess if such a thing as a magical bullet existed, I'd be excited to hear of it too; but in terms of actual physics, there is a reason that "magic bullets" are called such: because they exist in a fanciful sense, not in reality. Come to think of it, that's probably why the manufacturers refer to such bullets as "Fluid Transfer Monolithic." If they called it "Energy Transfer Monolithic," then every Good Ol Boy would be saying, "wait uh min'uht...if energy is bein' transferred out, don't that mean the boolit is losin' a lot uh energy in dat critter? Penetration gonna be shallow." Lol, yes.

So the best way to fix it is to get a new recoil spring, usually a 22 or 24 pound spring to slow the slide down and replace the magazine spring to make sure the round is picked up and fed in the proper location and time. This issue has come up in about 3/4 of the produced M&Ps. I'm one of the lucky 1/4 that didn't have the issue. Wolf springs have great after market springs.

As a hunting sidearm, it makes a ton of sense if it's loaded to the potential of 10MM. But for people carrying as personal defense in the cities and suburbs, it's just asking for over penetration trouble. 9mm is enough for anything on two legs not wearing body armor, and by that point you'd need a rifle anyway. Looking at the way that 135 grain performed, it looks almost identical to 45 Super in ballistics gel - dumping a massive amount of energy and stopping in the first 8 inches. 45 Super is a really bizarre cartridge, but I'd rather have that than 10MM for those effects.

Glocks look great and plenty of 10mm Glocks. Otoh, 9mm works fine for humans for a summer gun. .40 is good for winter. 10mm is good for bears 👍 Even .380 works if you’re using Defiant TCX, Underwood Sku 152 90 gr jhp +p, or Underwood 68 or 90 gr +p extreme defender. Bonus points if you’re using a 3.5” or longer barrel. .380 is absolutely great in those situations and has less recoil 👍 9mm is fine with many different ammos such as HST (buy it cheap in bulk, do not pay 2$ per round from Federal or big companies) or if you’re willing to pay for the best, also TCX. If you want the best for .40, 135 gr JHP from Underwood (600 foot pounds energy, .357 sig and 10mm level energy) or Hornady Critical Defense, or HST. In that order. Critical defense is bad for .380 and only marginally decent for 9mm. But critical defense is absolutely beastly in .40 S&W.

There is one 9mm cartridge that bests the 10mm, the 9x25 Dillon Underwood 125gr, 1,700fps, 802ft.lbs or 90gr, 2,000fps, 799ft.lbs. Even Underwood's 10mm loads are not that spicy. The bullet diameter matters less than what the bullet does inside the body when it hits watery tissue, most people die of internal bleeding and tissue destruction not exsanguinating through the hole in the skin i.e. caliber does not matter as much as velocity, energy, bullet construction, and did the bullet behave as expected: expand, plug with clothing, disintegrate, pass through w/o expansion, fragment by design (most handgun rounds are not supposed to fragment that was an improper bullet being used in a cartridge with too high a velocity and the bullet disintegrated).

There are still a few factory loadings that meet or exceed the original Norma spec. Double tap, Buffalo Bore, and Underwood all do. Sposedly the resurgence of 10mm has caused some of the more mainstream manufacturers to up the 10mm into its intended form. Really to get most out of 10mm you need to hand load. 1400fps at 180 grain 🤯 is completely achievable.

10mm was never between 41 and 44mag. It was the 41mag Winchester silvertip that the 10mm was around the same power as. The 41mag silver tip was extremely watered down. 10mm can't get above 800foot lbs in a handgun. 41 mag can get to 1200. You need 460rowland to get to where 41mag is.

I started shooting 10mm a few years ago and instantly became a huge fan. The ammo is more expensive but it's a blast to shoot. The 10mm is a great round for both pistol and PCC. It feels like the 10mm is the closest thing to a rifle round when fired out of a PCC, compared to other rounds fired from a PCC. You're right about a lot of manufacturers selling 10mm that is barely above 40S&W specs. You have to be careful and look at the specs when purchasing 10mm ammo.

The nasty thing about point blank shots, is that it's not just the bullet doing the damage...The bullet makes the hole, all that gas EXPANDING right behind it, fills and pressurizes the hole/cavity the bullet has made and blows it out that much worse

One of my most profoundly held hopes is that one day, a majority of gun folk will understand what "point blank" range means. For a middlin' warm 10mm load with a 12" target zone, it'll be 'round 125-150 yards.

One of my co-workers helped with the Development of the Bren 10. As he related, the original ammo for the Bren was the most powerful 10mm load ever done for a 10mm firearm and was a direct reason for some of it's reliability issues. Every load since then has been weaker in strength.

@@smithsmithersen1646i see your point but not everybody is bothered by recoil or anticipates it to the point they flinch and miss thier first shot. They key to achieving that is when training, take enough time to Make Every Shot Count. With enough practice, the speed will come with muscle memory. Conversely, just pulling the trigger a bunch of times and hoping you get on target is not proper training, and just reinforces bad practices. The nice thing about training like I suggested is that is that it uses less ammo (at least till you get really good)- no reason to burn more ammo than necessary to practice hitting exactly where you want to. If you can't afford to train or don't have the time, then yeah, 9mm is your answer especially if you think about recoil when you shoot. Anyway, thats just my take, everybody's different when it comes to when that bang happens.

I literally just got my first handgun last week (I’ve shot a few handguns just didn’t own one myself) and it was a 10mm S&W M&P 2.0 4 inch barrel. It has been my carry since then and I’ve taken it to the range as well and put some underwood 180 jhp through it, ran like champ. Absolutely loved it. I knew it was a powerful gun and I knew which companies make the best ammo for it, but what I didn’t know or couldn’t find was a ballistic dummy test as to get an approximation on what it would do in a self defense situation. Needless to say, I’m not disappointed in a single aspect of my purchase.

I did one in my own time to study the 10mm, vs 41 Mag vs 44 mag debate. I used a similar ballistics dummy and your typical Tee shirt, follwed by a Tee shirt and sweater, then a Tee shirt an old leather jacket, then Tee shirt, light sweater, and leather jacket. My test was done with a Glock 20 SF and I used Underwood's 165 and 180gr Gold Dots for the 10mm back when they still made them, and my own clone using bulled HST's in the same weight and Hornady XTP's. The 10mm in both weights still made pass throughs until the leather jacket was introduced. We also saw a few failures in the bullets such as failing to expand and full jacket separation on all three bullets. All shots were taken from 10 yards and a ransom rest was used. The rumor of nobody should carry 10mm because fear of over penetration is bunk, unless you are using hard cast ammo.

Look up Paul Harrell's channel. He makes what he calls a "meat target." Its a bag of oranges or a watermelon to simulate lung tissue. Pork ribs front and back and pork chops pectorals on the front. It is covered in several layers of cloth, front and back and covered with leather front and back. The 10mm does real damage. I believe it is a pretty accurate portrait of how bad someone's life is going to become if shot in the chest with a 10.

A relative of mine built a "40 super" from a g40 (just a barrel and spring swap iirc) for bushwhacking in grizzly country. It breaks factory frames after a few hundred rounds on account of the metal pins expanding the holes. His friend built a .45 super for the trip. If you don't know 45 super is a 45 acp with a thicker case to allow higher pressure while a 40 super is a 10mm auto bullet in a necked down .45 super casing, it really likes longer barrels to exploit that huge case volume. I got to try both at the range and the recoil on both of them with heavy hardcast handloads was ridiculous for a semiauto. The 45 took longer for followup shots but the 40 had this brutal yet crisp sensation that the slower 45 didnt muster. Imagine grabbing a mountain goats leg. Haven't had a chance to shoot anything bigger but my wrists aren't interested lol. I always wanted to see liberty ammo do their 60gr frags in 40 super. Same projectile in 10mm auto is breaking 2800fps from a 6" with less perceived recoil than 124 jhp underwood in 9.
