I Got To Taste a Fruit That is a Mango Relative and it Was Weird.
Alex at www.tropicalacresfarms.com gave me a Mangifera odorata to try. Wow!
The exact origins are unknown, however, the species represents a hybrid between Mangifera indica known as the Indian mango and Mangifera foetida which is known as the horse mango.
M.odorata is native to tropical Asia and can be found in areas such as Philippines, Peninsular Thailand, South Sulawesi, Sulu Archipelago and other close islands". "In Southeast Asia it is an introduced species"

I’m growing odorata, but also an odorata hybrid, odorata x foetida. It was developed in one of the Borneo research stations, it should be amazing.

Mangifera odorata - Kwini or Queenie....considered a wild mango relative so it isn't entirely wrong to just call it a wild mango...though not so wild anymore coz it's quite widely cultivated already...very fragrant, sweet when ripe, just kinda fibrous but very juicy and great for eating!

Not quite "gasoline" tasting...more accurately described as "turpentine" tasting which is actually a flavor quality found in some other mango varieties as well.

It actually is a mango. It's not a mango relative. The word "mango" can only be reasonably interpreted as a name for the genus, not just one species like M. indica, based on all normal linguistic considerations and evidence. As a common name, it's not a scientific distinction, but rather a linguistic distinction. Many species of mango are incredibly similar, just like different species of chili pepper are all called chili pepper. Incidentally, the name of the genus, Mangifera means "bearing mango". In any case, it's laughably absurd to say M. odorata, M. casturi, etc are mango relatives, not mangos. Maprang, ambarella, jocote, etc are mango relatives. This "not a mango" schtick is just something a small number of fruit enthusiasts prescribe. The other 99.9999% of the people in the world will not hesitate to call all species of Mangifera "mango".

I have tried the Mangifera Odarata at the Fruit and Spice Park. I couldn't tell the difference from the regular mango. Except it was a different variety of Magifera Indica. The tree is the row next to the fence with the next door house to the Park. I remember a Julie mango near it. I happen to like the Odarata at the fruit and spice park.

Hi. Nice to see your video. I grow this fruit at my farm. Something you should know, this fruit is dramatically different tasting when it is ripe vs overripe. I can’t be sure, but I fear yours was overripe.

what does a ripe one taste like? This one was not sweet at all.

@@FruitfulTrees Now I’m confident yours was overripe. A ripe mangifera odorata tastes sweet and pleasant, but with the addition of a turpentine flavor. It does have a strong durian like scent. Thus the nickname “durian mango.” The seed has some fibrous hairs that make eating close to the seed unpleasant. So we just cut around it with a knife and throw away the seed (without trying to eat the flesh next to the seed). Hope that helps. In summary, you’ve got to try it again…but make sure it’s less ripe. The fruit should be sweet. In contrast an overripe odorata tastes terrible (my friend describes the overripe fruit as tasting like poison).
