You know her name.
You’re on your way home and suddenly, your phone buzzes. Everyone around you looks down at their screen, and you know it is now everywhere: on your social media feed, on TV, even on traffic boards. You don’t pay much attention to all of it but still skim through the description while walking, just in case. When you finally look up from your screen, a weirdly familiar car catches your eye and you call 911. A kidnapped child has been saved thanks to the alert on your phone. This story is not uncommon, and it all started in Texas, in 1996 with the unsolved murder of 9 year old Amber Hagerman.

In an odd twist of prison justice, even while incarcerated the beasts become prey. Many don't make it out alive and are immediately 'bulls-eyed' and wiped out by other prisoners long before the sentence is set to end. Those times I am grateful.

@@victrola2007 So they say but my abuser did. He tortured me. All of the hate he left prison with he heaped upon a child with a sadistic mother Why so many of you feel prison reforms child abusers I do not understand. They do not fear prison. Especially when they are led to believe they will never get a life sentence if they do not murder their victims. As Alladian movie mentioned. You cannot believe what you are capable of living through. We have to change the laws because there are just too many abusers out here who have written them. Too many families paying to protect offenders from justice.

Our world would be a much better place for children if we eliminated these kind of criminals. The excuses that children were the perpetrators are the worst. A child acting out is not soliciting they just need a hug. That adults like pretending children want it. This is a lie. Training a child to accept this kind of abuse is unforgivable.

“We want first-time (child sex) offenders, life in prison without parole.” Amber’s mom just said the solution. These type of child murderers had previous related offenses and were often let off the hook on the first go.

Only problem with that is if the punishment is life in prisonment, theres no incentive for sex offenders to let their victims live. Its sick, but its how some people think. If i get life in prison for murder, and life in prison for abusing a child, i may as well kill them anyway :'(

Child sexual assault resulting in murder, yes. Lifetime no parole. However if sexual assault of a minor child had a conviction of lifetime in prison then about 1 in every 20 men and 1 in every 100 women would be in jail for their lifetime for THAT offense. Disgusting and true. It hasn't gotten worse its just being reported more to the police. Then just think, that for every pedophile sexual encounter that IS reported another is not. Many know about it and cannot leave or are adult victims of assault themselves from the same offender. It's a cruel and disgusting world that we live in. Protect yourself and your children. It can be a stranger danger situation OR it could be someone in your own family.

The brother is still young so I can’t imagine how he must be blaming himself when it’s not his fault. J just hope they got him help or any help he might need. They let these people out of prison on “good behavior” as if who they are in prison, while locked up with other adults, is any indication of who they become when they have access to our children. I don’t want to go into very specifics . But my brother was abducted in 2001. We have a similar alert system in my state/country. He was found within the hour, in a man’s car at a local football oval. The man was there to buy drugs from someone and left my 6yo brother locked in his car. We lived in a small town, everyone knew everyone. A man and woman walking their dog recognised him based on his description on local radio. The man refused to leave the area near the car, the woman ran to call the police. I am so grateful for it. He was scared, but he was not hurt. I imagine someone like Amber resulted in the system being adopted here, saving my brother. RIP Amber, thank you for saving so many children.

Idk if its possible, but in 1986 a brother and sister i went to school with, convinced me to work a summer job at a dairy farm in the country town we lived. Their father who was 50 not only raped me at 12 but forced me to stay at the dairy farm for up to 2 weeks. His name was wayne stroebeck (or spelled strobeck) his son would have been about 23 in 96. Wayne stroebeck drove in 86 a dark gmc/chevy/ type square bodied pick up truck with a camper ( the type with a flip glass lid that flips up to let you put stuff in the back of truck when you put tail gate down). He had a big knife like a buck knife type that he had in a leather thing he slide the knife in and was tied to his side I remember after my assault i knew the only way i could get away is to act like as if nothing was wrong as i remained calm. Inside i was terrified & injured.after i told another friend, she went with me to tell my mom, but the sheriff at that time, didnt arrest him. And i was never taken to a hospital. The town place he worked was 2 hours away from where Amber was last seen. Is it possible that it was the same monster ? Could he have still used his son to get victims?

Hearing her mom say that she held ambers hands after she was murdered and told her “mommy is here now” just broke me. The absolute despair and rage they must have felt is beyond me. I can’t picture this being my daughters or this puts me into a dark place. Killing a child should be an immediate death sentence. And I’m not talking a controlled, peaceful “last meal” situation. Let the family and the community handle people that hurt children. It’s what they deserve.

We tried that a few centuries ago. It didn’t work out so well. That mob mentality ends up doing much more harm than good for the rest of us. We’d end up with ‘The Purge’ on our hands pretty f’cking quick. The thing that bothers me is that they let them back out. At very least they should never let these people out again. Ever. I was married to a guy who was in prison for several years before we got together. He was moved around a lot for fighting, and talked about his time locked up in five different Michigan prisons. He told me that in all of them, guys who hurt kids are made to suffer. These are men who prey on little children. They’re weak and pathetic. Utterly defenseless against other men. They wander around with targets on their backs, and are harassed, beaten, raped, stabbed etc. by other prisoners. There are definitely fates worse than death. May their nights be long, and their days excruciating.

It seems insane to me that the Amber alert wasn't a thing until Amber's mom fought for it. You would think that it would be an automatic thought for radio stations and cell phones to broadcast whenever a child has been abducted. It's a great thing her mom did which has saved many lives. Watching the little girl getting rescued by the cops was happy but sad at the same time seeing what she had to deal with...

There weren't cell phones back then. We didn't know anything happened until all the sirens and cops went flying down the street. It was a great step in the right direction, implementing the Amber Alert system. There was a new flash on TV within the hour. Many people organized, and many went out on their own, searching for the black truck and any signs of Amber. I believe the perp was able to ditch the truck quickly, in a garage or shop somewhere. Because it would be difficult to hide at that point.

Things like that don't spring out of nothing. Someone has to think of it for the first time, and other factors have to align before the idea takes root. At the time, the internet was still not all that common outside academic circles. Cell phones were analog, and most people's news came from broadcast television or radio. It wasn't, by any means, an obvious thing to do. Note the fact that it took ten years for every state to adopt the system. To effeojnedib7208: Obviously, you're pretty young, if you were unaware of cell phones. They most certainly existed by then. Bell Telephone created the first cellular telephones in 1947, and the first commercial cellular network was in Tokyo, 1979. After that, it grew fairly rapidly. I recall them quite well...big, clunky, ugly things.

@@firstlast2414 That’s really not true. Yes, cellular phones existed, but they were huge brick-like things that almost no one had, you wouldn’t carry them around with you unless you were a businessman who needed it, and you’d still have to be in range of a cellular tower to be able to use one. They were absolutely nothing like todays phones, and you couldn’t receive messages on them. I’m not sure what point you were trying to make, because there would be no way to send a message, and even if you could, it probably wouldn’t transmit to anymore nearby. Cell phones weren’t commonly used until the late 90’s, and most people didn’t have a cell phone until after September 11th, 2001.

The really sad part about Salem's abduction is that cops had already searched the hotel room hours before. SOMEHOW, in a hotel room, they didn't find her. The pastor's call prompted a 2nd search. She had been raped during that time. How do you not find a child in a tiny hotel room?

I thot that was pretty incredible too. And how they just dismissed her asking for her clothes when she was found. @Reiney maybe. But Rape victims wear their clothes to the hospital all the time. I wasn't really suggesting he should take time to find her clothes and put them on anyway, i was just saying dismissing her like that probably wasn't great and they should be prepared to deal with victims instead of retraumatizing them by holding a naked child against his body while he carries her away naked in front of dozens of other men. Thankfully the other cop thought of that, cause the guy who wanted to be the hero to carry her out didn't think of it.

The Silver Alert is a good idea too. Don't get me wrong, grown adults should be free to roam and wander, but if a person has dementia, Alzheimer's or any other disease that mentally and cognitively impairs them as they age, they're much more vulnerable and at a higher risk of being taken advantage of. There are also pervs out there who "enjoy" grandmothers, and criminals who see older people as easy victims to steal from, ransom and rob. We need to do more to protect society's most vulnerable people.

When she was kidnapped from our neighborhood, it changed everything. I was a few years older than her. It scared our parents to death, and playing in the neighborhood became a thing of the past. It's sad she wasn't found alive but at least reporting of missing children changed for the better

@@engineernancy sorry I thought I had replied to this. She was playing with her brother at an abandoned grocery store we all used to play at. Some guy pulled up and snatched her from her bike. A neighbor saw the abduction and was able to get a description of the car and some of the license plate. She was found a few days later in a creek nearby. It was never solved

I remember reading articles on this stuff. usually i don't care about messed up stories and stuff but after i came across the autopsy article, i genuinely had the worst feeling i had in my chest in a while. to think someone's capable of mutilating and leaving an innocent little girl like that. truly fucked up.

That poor girl that was saved, the bed enraged me so much. The horrific monsters who do this need to put away for life first time they touch or look at images of s/a , they keep letting them out until they kill.

I find it very suspicious that she disappeared when the film crew were filming her and her family. I hope they checked the crew, I can't believe this is unsolved.
