My last boss kept me jumping through hoops, goals, and dreams for a promotion. For two years he kept at it. Always just one more hurdle before I could get my promotion. He even told me that the owner of the company said that I was long overdue. That last year, our branch made the highest profits of any other branch in the country due solely to my sales. When everything was done, he then told me that he didn't have the authority to promote me, and that he put in a request to the owner for my promotion. I no longer work there. It turns out that the manager was stringing me along just to make himself look great in the corporate structure and have better profits for our branch with my lower salary.

Yup. A boss held my promotion (non-competitive but performance based) because he "needed me to lead a project" before he could give me that promotion. I lead a team of one person senior to me and one person hired about a year and a half after me to get it. I had the most complex part of the project, and got all my work done early. I jumped in to help the other team members when needed, and kept everything on track despite those other team members often prioritizing other work. We met all of our deadlines (milestone and hard) with very little difficulty, and even won a group award for excellent performance. At the end of the project, he promoted both the greener coworker and I at the same time, despite them never leading a project. I found a new role within a few months, and got another promotion pretty quickly...

I had a guy refuse to pay me after I quit because his wife started throwing garbage at me when she found my log book of hours. They didn’t have a computer to keep track of anything so I kept track to prove to myself they were screwing me over. She said I was trying to steal from the company by lying about how much I worked. I asked where the book was, she pointed at the trash. I said that is my property you can’t just throw it away. That’s when she picked up the trash can and started pulling trash out and throwing it at me saying “is this it? How bout this?” I took all my company related stuff off, threw it down and quit on the spot. When the owner refused to pay me, I called the health department on him. When I came back to try and get my money he bragged that the inspector was on his football team in school and they were good friends so he had nothing to worry about. Little did he know I was recording him. I sent it to the health department and he was closed down for good by the end of the day. I felt so powerful. Because this man refused to pay me a tiny fraction of what he makes, what I was promised in the first place, he lost his entire livelihood. Do not mess with me. I might not always retaliate. But when I do, oh boy.

If they did that and I were in your shoes, I’d say the following. “Okay, [Boss], the way I see things is I’m getting reshuffled into an entirely new department with new things I’ll need to learn. And since you’re not going to give me training pay, I’m looking at three potential new outcomes that can happen in the next few minutes. The first outcome is you keep me in the department I was hired into, and I stay. The second is you give me a slight raise and I’ll remain an employee in the new department. The third option is me leaving for greener pastures since I didn’t ask for this and you consider me disposable.”

I ended a friendship once because she kept trying to get me to do artwork for her in exchange for "being able to take pictures of it when I was done." At the time I was pursuing photography as well as jewelry making and some other art forms. She wanted me to do things like encase a large beetle in resin for her, and in repayment I could take photos of it. I told her I would at least need her to pay for the supplies and she shut up real fast when she found out how much resin costs. Or she wanted me to turn some cameos into a jewelry piece and in exchange I could take photos and she'd give me one cameo (the smallest and cheapest of the lot). The final break came when she got all over me for saying I wouldn't commission someone to copy the work or an overseas artist. (Gorgeous hand carved bench, but the creator was in the UK and I am in America and can't afford the shipping etc). One of my strongest personal tenets as an artist is that I will never copy someone else's work, or ask someone to do so. She told me I was an arrogant, egotistical so and so to think that no one would ever ask me to copy someone's style. That's not what I said at all. I said I wouldn't do it, or ask anyone else to do it. But I'd had enough and haven't spoken to her since. She considered herself creative because she made pinterest projects, and no shade to pinners, there's absolutely nothing wrong with seeing a project someone has freely shared and wanting to do it yourself, but that isn't the same thing as creating original works all on your own and trying to make a living at it. Yet she acted like what I did was no big deal and I was too uptight over her constantly asking for free work.

I work for a small company that had about 30 employees at the start of 2020. As soon as things started shutting down, my boss freaked out and applied for a PPP loan. We lost a lot of business that year. One employee retired and four or five left the company for other jobs. At the beginning of 2021, she had a big meeting with everyone and told them that we are actually done better than projected all things considered, and she praised herself for “not having to lay anyone off,” even though the reason she didn’t have to lay anyone off was because 20% of her employees quit. And then fast forward to this year, four more people have left the company, and she keeps stacking up their workload onto those of us who stayed, but she doesn’t want to pay us anymore. I’m having a baby in January, so I’ll just leave then. It’s too much of a hassle to find another job while I’m pregnant. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Just a heads up from an old timer, when a job says there is, “room for growth,” or “growth opportunity,” that means you aren’t getting a raise or promotion unless someone dies, quits or retires. And even then those jobs go to the C-suite’s friends or people they owe favors to. And if you ask about promotion, the answer is usually, “You’re too valuable in this role.” So as soon as you hear any of those phrases, start looking for a new job.

I watched Target do this to people. They would make non-management workers do the work of three people, to keep the numbers down. Employees never knew how many hours they would work each week, and the company avoided giving people enough hours to get insurance, or even to pay their bills. I watched them literally work a man to death. They denied him insurance, by cutting his hours. When he had a heart attack, he had no insurance, no sick leave, or any form of support, besides going to work. So he did, and they had him working in the stockroom at 5am, where he had another heart attack, and died right there, in that stockroom. It made me sick. It made me angry. They put up a little memorial to him on a cork board in the front offices, and that made me even angrier.

I would've taken it down and put it in the manager's office. When asked why, simply explain that it was management whom worked him to death and not the rest of us, so management should be the one getting constantly reminded of the consequences of their actions. And if they threatened to fire me, I would act unsurprised. "Considering you worked a man to death, I have no doubt in my mind you would rob somebody else of their living to avoid being reminded of your failures. He's still dead, and you still did it to him, and firing me will only back you further into this cynical corner you've put yourself in."

Yes. I had my old superiors (supervisor and bosses daughter) say they couldn’t give me a raise they verbally agreed to a year prior because it “wasn’t in the budget” when I was given two clinics financials to work. CFO gave me a raise anyway because he said I was handing two positions and the reason THEY had said no was because I talked too much. But even if I did, work was done and always completed. It got too toxic that I left to a better place. Let’s just say they lost a clinic and hasn’t been the same since I left. I love my new job.

So I did the work of 3 people for 💩pay because they dangled a really big promotion in front of me and I was stupid enough to do it because I have no self worth and I let them piss all over me and then give me crap because of the mess. Then I finally stood up for myself and was walked out the door. I’m still bitter many years later.

This is my ex employer to a T. They made record results year after year and the bosses made good money. But for us actually doing the work - more work, job descriptions were wide and broad and all the time they complained we need to cut costs. People left and we never got new people to take their place; the work was just redistributed. So in the end I had 5 people's job description, no extra time to actually do the work, working in 3 languages, raking in money for the company and getting paid the same that I got when I was sitting behind a cash register at a convenience store. They actually lied to me and a few other coworkers about when our salary would be looked into. I'm much happier now, not making a ton of money but the amount of stress at work is minimal and my jonnactually has a meaning other than making rich people even richer.
