Great video... Maybe a clip show episode, but at least it means the money spent making The Case wasn't wasted. nor would the footage go to waste.

Good to see I'm not the only one to figure out "The Menagerie" is essentially a clip show (really the only two part clip show in television history).

That’s an interesting point. You don’t often see a multi-part clip show. I hadn’t even thought about that before…

Yes they reused footage from their unaired pilot because Gene Roddenberry was a lot of things , but frugal was at the top of the list. The Cage wasn't that bad for a first episode, though it had more of a lost in space vibe to it than The Man Trap. Though both have similar mind reading elements to them.

You’re right on the money with the mind reading. I wonder why that happened.

@@allmousemedia Not to Dump n Roddenberry because The Original Star Trek was one of my favourite shows of all time but both those episodes made use of the Fantasy of a woman being put in a position where she could know a man's deepest desires and try to seduce him through those. Very male fantasy trope. And a little of Be Careful what you wish for, cause it's actually bad for you. Let's see the Cage was written by Gene Roddenberry and Robert Butler and The Man Trap was written by George Clayton Johnson. Okay so that theory doesn't work but Roddenberry did choose The Cage as his first pilot and maybe chose the Man Trap to be his first aired episode.

Overall I like this episode but the idea that Pike can't communicate at all just doesn't work. If he can beep he can select letters by someone reading the alphabet. This was done in an episode of The Simpsons and Stargate SG-1. Also did you notice that in the documentation of the original missipn Spock is listed as Half-Vulcan Science Officer.

Is the death penalty order enforced or is it a deterrent? We see in Strange New Worlds the Enterprise go back again. No one is killed in that second trip either. The illusions that Pike went through on Talos could have been used in Discovery as a much better explanation for why the Enterprise didn't have holography. Pike, after being tortured and manipulated by the Talosians had the holographic projectors removed from the Enterprise because he wanted nothing on his ship that reminded him of Talosians. Further he could have told Starfleet that they needed to study the tech further because of the addictive nature of illusion. Because Pike is so well respected Starfleet launches the investigation and discovers holo addiction. Which explains why Kirk era ships don't have holographic projectors either. They've been removed. Which would be a great tie in to TNG and those characters who get lost in fantasy as well, like Reg Barclay. Or Geordi in the Booby Trap episode. Or Riker in the Binar episode.

I really like this idea and would love to see it fleshed out more!

@@allmousemedia. Here's a link to my first Star Trek video about how Discovery writers could benefit from canon and not be weighed down by it. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fL9-h7J82afdkmg.htmlsi=cS1CaTVnK-D7UQSG

Actually, Gene's been deceased for years. The Cage is included in the box set for Blu Ray and DVD.

Did anyone say he was still alive? All Trek fans know he died during the making of TNG - there’s a dedication on an episode to him. We also know The Cage is on the Blu Rays, etc - I discussed that in my review of The Cage.
