Who is this elusive Parisian girl and what makes her so irresistible? Or maybe she is just a fantasy? Or a universal deception? Let's figure out what this charm is and how to deal with it.

We must realize “Parisian girl” doesn’t mean “common Parisian girl”. It means “high-class Parisian girl”.

That’s just so offensive and shows how little Paris you know. True style isn’t outside the shows or in luxe boutiques! It’s in Marais and on St Germain and doing the daily shop in Pernety and Plaisance and in the rue d’high of the northern suburbs. In the markets. Anyone can get a blowout twice a week and wear head to toe Chanel. That’s not style, there’s no wit or whimsy or personal touch. Go to the Universite Paris IV and see how much style from swaps, charity shops and the closet of you Maman. LEARN.

@Katw-lk6tw You’ve misunderstood the point of the comment. The commenter wasn’t talking about real girls who happen to be from Paris; hence, the usage of the quotation marks. The commenter was mocking the frenzy surrounding a caricature of a fantasy that doesn’t actually exist.

It's not even high-class girl. Parisian Chic is just old branding that lives on for marketing purposes. The majority of the women here wear minimal makeup and the average lady is not afraid to let a few pimples show.

As a French person, I find it funny that there are people who think Parisian women wear red lipstick. Most French women actually avoid wearing red lipstick because they don't want to "come across as a wh0re" or look like they're "asking for attention" (I know it sounds crazy, but it's true). Parisian fashion is just conservative fashion and makeup, really. It's about looking good without ruffling anyone's feathers (aka convering yourself up and not standing out too much).

People that have that mentality are idiots. Slutshaming women based on a single lipstick colour doesn't seem very classy to me.

I lived in Paris for a while during my early 20s and I feel so sad whenever people think of "French/Parisian style" being exactly as it is in Pinterest... because real Parisian girls/their perceptions of fashion are much more diverse, complex, interesting and fun, and it's often ignored the fact that most of them are POC..... There's life beyond Jeanne Damas and her red lips!! :(

Very interesting and realistic. My French grandmother would not allow me to socialize with “American Women” because they did not dress properly. This was in the 60’s and 70’s.. we always dressed nicely and with quality clothes when we went out. We did not have a lot of clothes and we changed into “ comfortable house attire” when we returned home. I still have that mindset and yes, I always use a light touch of quality perfume. Her “Parisienne Woman” was defined as a woman who took care of herself as best as possible and dressed to respect her body. Thank you for the memories you have brought up.

I think it's funny that in most pictures of these "Parisian girls", they are just wearing a form of "jeans and a T-shirt" and actually look kind of boring, but it's somehow "chique".... a typical case of "is it an outfit, or are you just skinny and/or a model".

On oublie que cette esthétique tourne autour de la classe sociale (haut), de l’argent et de la forme très mince… 😢Thé internet is very good at reminding women to find faults among themselves to become an aesthetic, and capitalism via social media very conveniently supplies ‘the solution’ for this ( influencers selling whatever it is they are selling to become and look like them)

I actually really liked the book “French Women Don’t Get Fat” - its this woman who grew up in the 60s talking about how her family helped her regain balance after overeating sugars and getting sick, - its set up as stories from a past time and advice for simple local food and walking. I actually found it a fun read, more like a novel oddly? (But I probably skimmed bits that weren’t relevant to me, too) Unfortunately, I guess it started a trend…

My entire life has been dominated visually by the aethetics & fashions of Paris, London, NYC & LA. Guess what--I don't live in any of those places & I am not a socialite, model or actress. I assume any large metropolitan area has a diversity of cultures & aesthetics & street fashion. (My frame of reference is SF & Seattle since I attended art school there) Smaller wardrobes makes sense since closet space is pretty hard to come by in any large city but beyond that, these aesthetics are contrived & aspirational at best & do not represent the majority of people who live & work & attend school & go out with friends for drinks, etc. Not everyone is young, thin, white & wealthy.

Generally speaking there’s always something wrong when there’s a term that just lumps people together in a hive. 😄 When it‘s „the French girl“, „the clean girl“, „the star boy“ etc. It’s just a fantasy, not reality.

New subscriber. I just found your channel. I must admit that when I was in Paris, I was a bit disappointed with how most French women dressed. I just expected more. That said, I've been a Francophile for decades. I'd love to go back to Paris, but the images of all the pro-Hamas protesters scare me. Then I read that the Israeli Olympic athletes were given death threats. What happened to Liberty, Equality, Fraternity? BTW, I love your accent. It's charming.

With the greatest of respect I've always found the 'Parisian chic' look to be pretty boring overall. It lacks any original thought, at least in this modern day. Its snooty and doesn't represent the rest of France. Some French women do get fat! Great history lesson. Thanks.

Tell me you've never been to Paris without saying you've never been to Paris. Smh I've been living in Paris for 10 years and I've never seen anyone wear a burqa. I'm French and wherever I lived, nobody was wearing a burqa. A hijab, sure. But zero burqas in sight. Maybe stop being racist and islamophobic? It literally costs nothing. Or as the French say, "Ça ne mange pas de pain".

Can I be honest with you? I prefer the 50/60s idea of a Parisienne because the modern ideal Parisienne just comes off as a starving homeless girl who takes the rejected clothes inside the dumpster behind GoodWill and uses the sample makeup from Sephora while combing her hair with her fingers.

Conclusion: imigrants and black people don't buy magazines with black models on the cover. They don't care about representation. I am Polish. When you see a Polish model on the French or American Vogue cover be sure all Polish it-girls and fans will RUN to store and buy at least one copy. It's not the magazine's fault that black models don't sell magazines.
