"It's Almost CREEPY How Good This Is" (Lightroom 11 Auto Masking Demo)

Now normally new software updates are something I do NOT care about BUT this new subject selection tool is going to save photographers so much time! It's already changing the way I edit and I wanted to show you why I think it's so powerful, especially for wedding photographers!

Love this update so much! Another thing I learned (not sure if it came with the update or if it's always done this) is when you're using the brush tool, if you click on a spot & hold shift as you click on another spot it will automatically connect the two with a straight line! So as you were subtracting the mask from the invitation suit you can get those lines super sharp. Mind blown!!

As an Aviation/Airshow Photographer, this stuff is wicked cool when isolating aircraft (some clocking speeds of near Mach 1) against the sky, especially overcast skies that we often face. It's a constant subject vs sky game when you're subjects are airborne MUCH of the time. It's awesome new tooling and for someone not well-versed in PS, it's a blessing. I've been an LR guy forever. PS, not so much. 😉. GREAT VIDEO.

Agreed, it's so dang accurate! Did a outside event yesterday and added a mask punched up the artist and then a radial to tone down a light on the way it took me minutes. WOW just WOW! I used to export to photoshop and then back to LR.... oh didn’t play with erase yet.... enjoyed the video your excitement is so wonderful !

I think this is finally giving me the push I needed to get LR! I’ve been a PS girl for 12 years (specifically CS5, and I refuse to upgrade 😂) but there are so many Lightroom presets I love! Thanks for this video!!! This tool will be amazing for newborn sessions to help select only the baby!

I just watched your video and went into LR to try out the new mask to see if it was as easy as it looked. All I can say is WOW! I was finally able to get that "pop" with an image I'd been struggling with and it only took about 1 minute.

I've been playing with this a lot over the last couple weeks, and it is amazing. But there is one problem I have found that I haven't been able to solve. If I select subject, I can then fine tune the mask by adding or subtracting as you showed. Then, if I want to select the background, I can copy then invert the mask. However, the changes I made using add/subtract don't get applied to the inversion. I have to then manually brush on the same changes to the background mask. Have you found a solution to this?

I’ve already seen so many people make super unnatural images with this. It’s a big lesson on knowing the line and not over using the easy mode.

You should also try Luminar A.I. they have auto masking is for adding more bokeh. Let's say you are shooting f2.8 lens you can make it look like f1.2.

I had the gradient stuff on the iPad I believe but it took so much time trying to use the pencil or finger to get every detail on a person at times and not go too much off the body lol so this is a big help

I’ve taken your lightings and locations course. I’m struggling most with backlit ceremonies. I had one recently and I guess the only thing to do is go with the haze, or shoot with flash? My 35mm with haze is the worst!!!

On computer we’re you never able to highlight certain subjects manually and change them ? The only new thing that popped out to me was the auto subject select where it handled all the work for me lol but I usually under expose to keep the sky details in and edit my subject after and brighten them.

This just might be the push I needed to leave camera raw for lightroom. CR has been safe for me for so long, I get it and it has so many features LR has. This new LRC update is stepping up their game. Love the PS like control they have added

Camera Raw and Lightroom editing are the same program. When you bring a photo into Photoshop, it goes through Camera Raw first. What she demonstrated is available at the beginning or if you find you need to adjust a subject, you can access it through Filters>camera raw. I used it for the first time today and was amazed.

@@patricialeonard9622 they are the same in a sense. I did discover ACR did the same update so I will most likely stay where I am. I have used the CR filter in PS for a long time and trying to avoid PS as much as possible. I think the advantage to LR is the cataloging and edits right there in the LR module. I am so familiar with the shortcut keystrokes and layout of Bridge and ACR I decided not to make the switch.

This new feature saved my rear on a recent wedding. The room was extremely tungsten but the videographer was using a daylight light, so in half the photos I selected the subject and the background separately and adjusted white balance differently.

if you didn't already know, use the option button to toggle the add/ subtract mask to intersect. Then you can add radial or linear gradient mask to your existing mask.

The new AI functionality is great but the big announcement with LRC v11 was the Color Profiles for R5/R6. Make sure you’ve set your import preferences to use the “camera specific” profile and not the Adobe default. You’ll see a huge difference in color accuracy and a better overall RAW image.

You would need to change settings of the brush. There is no opacity option for the brush itself.

Thanks for this and I might have to get the new lightroom . But I can't help feel that you could make these photos "pop" with fill flash. The modern wedding photographer seems reluctant to use it.So many people rely on post processing now when the original adage was to get it right in camera.I know you have posted about fill flash but many now use just available light. It is better to use available light when it is any available light including on camera flash.Photoshop used to have in earlier additions where you could add fill flash after.I don't know whether they still do.I find personally because I don't shoot professionally hardly ever anymore that Apple's photos app on my desktop fills all my current needs.

Knowing that AI can mask so well now, would you change up how you shoot so that instead of exposing for the shadows you now expose for the background, knowing you can brighten up the couple?

These features are awesome, but is anyone else frustrated by the extra amount of clicks needed to use the brush tool? I used to be able to just go through each photo and use the same brush. But now it makes me start all over each new photo I move onto. One click turned into like 4-5 clicks. Has anyone experienced this & figured out how to adjust this??

I must admit I struggle with this. As a student of photography a very long time ago who hand developed photos I can’t seem to love a computer edit. I do use Lightroom when when I use film.

It is nice, but in fairness, wasnt Luminar AI already doing the same? like for body shapes, skin colors and such? of course it is a bit better if in the same software but it does not sound that revolutionary, but rather Lightroom catching up with others... also, the way you describe it, sounds like if the brush mask did not exist.. I mean a week ago, I would just brush the couple and do the same adjustments as you are doing... what am I missing?

You're missing the efficiency of 1) not having to use a separate program if everything is all in Lightroom and 2) it doing the selection for you waaay faster and likely more accurate than using the brush and making the selection manually...

Check at like 13 minutes and look at the brush box all the way on the right and you'll all see you can apply some of the auto features even when you're refining the auto mask!

What's most UNfortunate about this feature is it's not possible to export this mask to photoshop via Edit In Photoshop.... that's too bad. I mean I'm happy they worked this into lightroom, and it's amazing - but I would love for the mask to follow along during the final touches in photoshop.

I was playing around with this the other day with different images. One specifically that just blew my mind was a picture of my Yorkie … she has crazy hair everywhere haha and it did an amazing job of selecting all of her “mane and ear fluff” 😂 I was quite blown away by the accuracy of the mask!
