(SPOILERS) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . That point about the MPs needing to be equipped with ODM gear is just another example of Erwin's genius and forward planning - he anticipated the possibility of a titan or titans appearing in Stohess and wanted to ensure the MPs were at an advantage, ie being able to either fight or perhaps flee.
