Multi-day hikes in winter require gear that is primed to keep you warm and dry, Weight is a secondary requirement but all your gear still needs to fit into your pack! This winter I challenged myself to hiked two National Trails, Yorkshire Wolds Way and the Cleveland Way.

These trails provided misty rain and torrential rain and everything in between. Temperatures were often hovering around freezing and cold winds tested my kit to the limit. I share this video so that you can critique my winter pack and gear and offer further suggestions for improvement.
To offer insight into the gear I used and the kit I wore, where possible I try to compare and contrast to the gear I would use for the rest of the year. I note that my overall base weight is just under 9kg, however, I do not explore the individual weights of each item other then when I think it is useful to provided additional insight. However, if you do need further info of any of the items used, please ask for additional information in the comments section.

Great tip about the sit mat - I’m a side sleeper too so will try that next time I’m camping. Thanks!

This was interesting. It was good to see how you managed wet/dry gear and protecting that vital change of clothes for sleeping. I've only ever done over-night wild camps in winter and the prospect of carrying on for several days in bad weather without a campsite is a bit daunting but this shows how it can be managed (and there are always B&Bs!). Interested in the hand warmers. Generally I don't like 'gizmos' but these seem like a good idea. Thank you for the helpful video.

Glad you found it interesting Catherine. Understand the gizmo reluctance, but I think the simplicity of these and their many uses make these worth exploring.

Very interesting! Particularly like the hand warmers tip. I'm too much of a wimp to camp out in cold weather, I much prefer the summer for camping.

Whilst I had done the odd night or so in winter this was my first go at a sustained period of time. It was interesting to push myself to discover and consider how to overcome the challenges that winter presented. But for sure, summer camping is best and it can’t come quick enough for me! Thanks for watching and I do appreciate your comments.

So base was actual just a tad under 9 kilos and gross was more like 12. Is that more in line with your thinking? I’m currently walking in Aus, but thinking when I get back I could put a full weight list in the description.

Nigel, A very informative video. I can't believe you can get all of that in under 9kgs. Your gear must be very light. I'd probably switch a few things in or out to suit me, but still impressive. Still have questions though, which I'll get to once you are back home from your trip (which I hope is going well - I'm waving to you across the water if you hadn't noticed, LOL). Ryk.

Did I miss it? I saw the bowl, but cooking/brew kit, stove, or do you just take food bars etc: ?

Hi John, there was a picture of my bag of bits and pieces and the tiny stove head (26grams) was in there. Did not show the fuel but that was standard small gas canister. The bowl is all I take and I use it for brews and cooking in. Definitely, could not do just food bars, I enjoy my hot food and brew, not a weight saving I would consider especially in winter. Thanks for watching and I do appreciate the comment. Cheers
