Steven, I've recently discovered your content. I am awestruck by your uncanny ability to speak cogently and forcefully in opposition to a wide spectrum of incoherent conspiratorial worldviews. The sheer tenacity and mettle required to wade through the mountains of anti-science rhetoric is, truly, astounding. I commend you for still showing up to these panels and continuously force feeding rational perspectives to the audience and other panelists. My impression is that you're too intelligent, methodical, and concerned about harboring well-evidenced worldviews to platform these people. I think you--on an intrinsic level--deserve to have intellectually stimulating conservations with good-faith and objective interlocutors. Frankly, I think you need a lyceum and not a stage brimming with bat-shit [#zoonosis] absurdity. If you're ever in the Bay/Palo Alto, I'll buy you beer.

It’s very frustrating to watch Lauren come so hard at Steven. I recognize she was trying to make a joke (or at least that’s her excuse), but he was already being dogpiled by everyone else on the panel. Lauren came so hard, swung for low blows, and doubled down when the mood got noticeably awkward. It sucks extra because Steven is always, always, always running impressive defense for Lauren.

It was a decent joke at first but she kept going with it, and it made it kinda weird when you consider their relationship outside the debate. Whenever someone says "Covid has a 99% survival rate," they should be asked how many people are in the US (~330 million), and what is 1% of that number? Oh, so you're okay with the death of 3.3 million Americans.
@johnatola7731
@johnatola7731 2 жыл бұрын
@Smally Bigs It's not overblown to any extend. Covid is the tipping point. It wasn't like the hospitals saw the same amount of deaths they would usually see and those just happened to also be Covid-positive people so they attributed them to it. The issue is that hospitalizations and deaths for those comorbidities exceeded all statistics. Hospitals ran over capacity. People who had prior conditions died a lot younger than they should have and those weren't some outliers but consistent numbers. The problem with these discussions seems to be that one side of the panel is there to earn cheap applause by talking fast and being outraged while another part is looking at the scientific evidence - which yes, changed over time, yes is not perfect, yes will reveal a lot of mistakes made years from now for sure, but is at the end of the day a thousand times more effective and reasonable to rely on compared to "yeah, just lock down those obese people (which is more than half of America, but sure)".

During the initial outbreak the Czech Rep instituted a mask mandate that required everyone to wear a mask as soon as they left their homes. It creates a grass roots movement by moms and grandmas to make hand made cloth masks, and it cut spread by close to 80 percent. When the US was at 100,000 deaths they had under 2500 and it remained quite low throughout the worst of it. The sense of duty to your community is what helped there and we see how hysterical, conspiracy brain rot caused in the US with now over 1,000,000 deaths.

To be fair, I’m sure she was saying that it’s really the other measures that work and the masks are a nearly irrelevant addition. Imagine you’re depressed and you start exercising, socializing, and eating well, but also start doing power poses in the mirror to improve your confidence. Maybe the confident poses in the mirror make some tiny impact but it is really the other things that make most of the difference. You can say “power posing in the mirror cured my depression if you combine it with the other things I did” but really the power posing likely did nothing to cure your depression. Saying a+b+c+d=100 doesn’t reveal very much about any one variable. D could be 1 and a,b,c could constitute the other 99. I think I’m overexplaining hopefully my point was clear. Just think we should be charitable, even to Lauren Southern.

The conservatives talking about not needing the covid vaccine would be echoing similiar statements during the Polio epidemic. I think the argument they’d make is the damage it did to children. Of course you can survive without use of your legs. You are wrong though. Polio had almost 15% rate of mortality while covid only had 3.5%. Also polio had way worst side effects specially to children. I'm sorry I agree conservatives re dumb but your argument is not it. Also covid 19 mortality includes people that had other diseases while having covid. Yes covid could've been the reason that made the previous condition worst and made the person die, but in some cases covid19 made no difference in the previous condition, the person died from the condition and the death still counted for ths covid statistics. My brother worked with patients with covid since the start of the pandemic and he confirmed me this. But yeah I do agree almost everyone should've had the covid vaccine, only people that where extremely debilitted or had bad reactions to the vaccine can consider not taking it but risking having covid.

Her joke about Destiny gaming had a point. Those who are introverts can handle lockdowns far better than those who are extroverts. If your routine is playing video games 8 hours a day (not an ad hom, I have done this myself as a teenager), then lockdown doesn't disrupt you very much. If your routine is going to the gym, then work, then hang outside w/friends, then go to a restaurant, then go to the movies; lockdown will completely mess you up.

I love watching a panel where 90% of the points made are emotional, and when the rational person tries to explain why those emotional responses are incorrect and misguided, they get shouted over with no reproach from the moderator. The best part was when the moderator watched the rational person get interrupted multiple times and then cut them off when they tried to respond, changing the subject in the process. Having 3 conspiracy theorists along with an idiot moderator + 1 actual person is definitely not a recipe for "better discourse". Also, it's quite obvious that these panelists have no idea about historical viral events, people were actually shot for violating mandates that were imposed during the Spanish Flu (Which I agree with).

The people who said they will never take the vaccine while Trump was in office is the exact people that was pushing so hard for everyone to get the vaccine when he out of office say….Kamala Harris, the vaccine did not change only our leadership. Yes vaccines are not 100% but when a virus has a higher infection rate vs mortality rate people will weigh the option if they will take the chance of adverse side effects vs a stronger case of the flu. I promise you if a different strand of smallpox broke out again people would desperately will to take any vaccine because death is likely if you get smallpox till a cure to it is made.
