Driver-assistance systems have become commonplace, and our testing found none of them can sniff out drivers aggressively misusing them. Check out the full story here: www.caranddriv...

I think it's a myth that people are over confident using these ADAS systems. It's just the opposite. Distrust is the initial and natural response until a certain amount of experience using the system is attained. Abuse of these systems is not due to naive ignorance, but deliberate risk taking by a tiny number of foolish people.

Words matter too. Most carmakers call it an ‘assistant’, only Tesla calls it an ‘autopilot’. Trust in ADAS and willingness to pay is improving rapidly. There’s an EU mandate coming up as well and ADAS is also in Bidens infrastructure push, together with EV. That’s why we’ll see a shopping spree in acquisitions of companies who want a stronger footing in ADAS. From sensor makers to HD map makers to software and silicon.

I test drove a new f150, and the hand on the steering wheel sensor pretty much eliminated the value of the system. I was hoping the system would give me some relief from the discomfort of keeping my hands on the steering wheel for hours on a long road-trip. Paying attention to traffic is not what wears me down. My fatigue comes from finger, wrist, elbow, and shoulder pain.

I recently rented a 2022 toyota camry, and found the steering unpleasant. I disabled every function I could and still it would try to jog the wheel against my wishes. Example: two lane road, 1 in each direction, there was a bicyler in the oncoming lane, and a car passing giving him plenty of room. I moved over about a foot, to give the two cars ample room. The camry tried to counter it. I can not think of a situation where I'd want the f'ing car to touch the steering. The steering also was twitchy and without road feel, probably from all the crap, servos etc., I felt glad to go back to my 2011 hyundai sonata with kyb struts and shocks and non-cyborg steering.

I had a coughing fit while in the driver seat with Super Cruise engaged on my Chevy Bolt. It kept disengaging because my eyes weren't in the camera during these fits. There needs to be better discernment of not paying attention and having an event that involuntarily brings your body forward temporarily (covering the camera. A second camera on the dashboard would help. Attention measured in one or the other or both.

It's not the car industries responsibility, it's the drivers. If they have driver seat sensors, someone can put a weight in the seat. They have no responsibility beyond their control. If they put a safety in place and it's just bypassed, it's the drivers who are liable who bypassed the system. Same applies to safeties on any other appliance. If I bypass and trick the draft inducer on my furnace, I'm responsible when the furnace kills my family from CO poisoning, not Carrier.

So I'm confused. I'm not being critical, I just don't understand. When you were in the driver's seat the system would quit if you looked away for more than a few seconds. But then you said you were able to fool the vehicles into driving without anyone in the passenger seat. So the system will not tolerate eyes looking away but it will tolerate no eyes. How is that possible?

Doubt it. Most of these systems clock out if it's raining too hard for them to see. No reason why they can't clock out for a broken weight sensor either. As far as moving around, no weight detected for 30s would handle that.

My experience with a Lexus ES 350 (2022). I needed to drive non stop Chicago to central Florida due to a medical emergency (20 hours). Flying was not possible at that time. ER in Chicago was not a pleasant option either.I am 80 years old and can not drive longer than a few hours without substantial rest. I used a simple rubber band to simulate to torque on the steering wheel combined with following fast trucks at a safe distance. This got me there with my Covid sick wife in record time. I had to be alert at all times to look for exceptions. Like construction or unsafe drivers. I repeated long distance driving since then with good results. I am looking forward to advances in driver assistance.

Learn what an autopilot actually does and you'll see why it's perfectly reasonable for Tesla to call it that way, until then shut up. Tesla's Full Self Driving is a future capability that is currently in beta with only a few selected users, it has not been widely released.
@dcharizard91

The reason you haven’t seen anyone attempt to use ADAS by other automakers while not being present in the driver’s seat is because Tesla is the only one calling their system Autopilot with Full Self-Driving despite currently being only Level 2 autonomy. Sure, Tesla’s system might move up to Level 3 or 4 one day through eventual updates, but calling it by those names right now is deceptive and dangerous. None of the other automakers are implying their cars can drive by themselves.
@NelsonBrown
@NelsonBrown 3 жыл бұрын
I think there's also something cultural going on where people who are willing to take risks with new technology seem to be more drawn to the Tesla brand. The names "Autopilot" and "Full Self-Driving" are just a couple examples of the much broader branding campaign. I think the vast majority of Tesla owners are more responsible, but the fringe risk takers cause a lot of worry and real problems.
