Hi everyone welcome!
So I happened to have a handful of cars with “self-parking” capability so we rigged up some tests to see just how good these systems are.
Tesla Model S and 3 including AP1 v AP2
Audi E-tron GT
Ford Mustang Mach-E
BMW i4 M50
Parallel and perpendicular parking tested.
Autopilot 1 is better than AP with Enhanced AP/Full Self Driving
It’s one test where Tesla certainly don’t win!!
Hope you enjoy the video.

A fair test would have made sure there was equal clearance available for all of the cars. Bigger cars need a wider gap, but that first tesla you tried with had almost no clearance. I would have liked to see you park it yourself with the same clearance as you did with the other cars. I think your AP1 model has lidar, but the AP2 is likely just using vision, hense failing. All the cars that did well likely used LIDAR. The switch to a vision system was definitely a downgrade on Tesla. It would have been interesting to see if the other cars would have run over a kid though. The tesla did seem very aware of pedestrians... which is a good thing if you don't want to run somebody over. However in general it does seem pretty sucky at parking.

The Ford and BMW systems both use Mobileye, they are the same systems but slightly tweaked. Tesla AP1, the one that actually parked, uses an old version of Mobileye too. Later Tesla versions use Tesla's own hardware and software, which is why its actually worse at parking. The reason Elon moved away from Mobileye was because he wanted to market the cars as self driving, and Mobileye refused to do that due to safety. When Tesla's own AP2 came out, to nobodies surprise a bunch of Tesla's crashed and killed the drivers. Mobileye is the better self driving technology, they just dont push it beyond its limits like Tesla does with their system.

@@__aceofspades Actually it very much does have something to do with the sensors, as Tesla decided to use cameras instead of Lidar and ultrasound, but hadn't finished optimizing the vision , which is probably why it didn't perform as well as in the follow-up video.

I would rather have a reliable algorithm like in the Audi that just gets the job done and rocks it. You don't need complex AI, Machine Learning and general case algorithms to park a car. The scenarios for self-parking are well enveloped and much easier and reliable to write an algorithm to handle it. But Tesla, as usual, likes to overcomplicate simple things, and then they don't work reliably because they're overcomplicated (Falcon doors, motorized door presenter handles, FSD come to mind).

I love how Mercedes does this (at least in my wife's 2015 GLA, which is the only self-parking experience I have): no special buttons of any kind: you just stop past a parking spot and put your blinker on to indicate you want to go into the spot, and the car will automatically ask you if you want help with parking. If you then hit the OK button, you just take your hands off the wheel and with your accelerator and brake you control the speed at which it parks. And it parks absolutely perfectly every time. It's really, really cool :-)

Great video! Very surprised at how poorly the newer Tesla cars did. I work in the AI industry and have some familiarity with the technology at play here - so just to explain what's going on: Ford, BMW and Volkswagen Group (inc. Audi) all use ADAS systems from Mobileye (an Israeli company, now owned by Intel), which is why the parking behaviour of those cars is almost identical. Tesla also used Mobileye's tech until 2017 when they decided to switch to their own systems. It's a huge surprise to me though that the Mobileye system in the 2016 Tesla is so much better than Tesla's own FSD. I suspect the reason is that parking assist is not a big focus for the Tesla Autopilot Engineering team as they are more focused on the FSD capabilities. Conversely Mobileye have taken a more slow and steady approach with their autonomous vehicle tech and have likely focused much more on the basics like self-parking and really perfected that.

This is very much speculation, but looking at how the FSD Tesla cars were 'sawing' at the wheel and moved in quite a jerky way, I wonder if Tesla have tried to be too clever and relied more on deep learning and unsupervised AI techniques like Reinforcement Learning and trained the FSD system using datasets of human driving behaviour, but not quite got it right... The Mobileye systems look like they are just doing a solid mathematical, deterministic approach. Need to go ask a Tesla autopilot engineer!

• I liked the Audi system the best: you had to keep a button pressed while it's parking, kind of giving you some control or involvement. It also parked perfectly parallel. The beeps are a bit annoying. • The BMW system was also spot on, parked beautifully parallel. While the press a button, let go and let the car do the rest it actually nice, I think with auto-parking being a new thing we might not be ready to give the car the complete control yet. That's why I think Audi's and Ford's system is good to by leaving some immediate control on the driver (well, I assume that the car would stop if the driver would release the button). • Ford did a proper job with both parking scenarios, but didn't park as nicely parallel as Audi and BMW did. It tended to oversteer a bit. • Tesla was a disappointment and it's probably overrated. How about 45º angle parking? Can these cars manage that?

I would hope that the BMW simply links to the brake pedal as an emergency stop function. Which version is safer is up for debate. It isn't difficult to think of reasons for favouring each version. Whichever system is in place however, I suspect that if a driver sees something they are worried about, most will instinctively go for the brakes rather than release the switch. For an example, we just have to look at the perpendicular parking test with the Audi getting a bit closer for comfort with that column, and the brakes being the control used to stop the car from continuing. This is one of those things where both options are acceptable solutions, provided they function as expected.

@@damionlee7658 I agree, and would assume that the brake pedal functions as an 'abort mission' function. The one thing that car manufacturers would want to avoid 100% is running the car into other cars or objects. Tesla is obviously overzealous and even stops when there are pedestrians in sight. WIth Audi's system I liked that they displayed how it's going to park the car, ie. the path overlayed on the screen. I'd prefer a set-and-forget function like BMW's, but think that it's too early. Give us a few years and show us it's working and people would want that over Audi's one. Would be interesting to know what happens when the driver hits the brake pedal during the self-parking procedure: Will it completely abort the procedure or would the driver have the option to continue?

Notice that the so-called parking gap for the test has the front boundary created by a car parked facing against the traffic flow, which is most certainly illegal. The tesla auto collision feature will not allow the Tesla to enter that zone without human taking full control of the vehicle.

@@djtaylorutube The point being that if the stationary car was turned around and the test repeated, the result will probably change. Simple to do. But the KZfaq testers are not problem solvers. It is totally illogical that the FSD team cannot park a car, in the circumstances presented to the FSD AI. The reason is clearly auto collision avoidance safety feature receiving priority. The KZfaqrs are controlling the parked cars for the test, but they park the front car backwards, then blame tesla, generating clickbait and thousands of dumb comments. The clickbait should read Tesla's new auto-collision-avoidance feature works during auto parking. The Tesla is preventing fender benders for example when an unanticipated driver tries to steal the available parking space. The KZfaqrs control for this event in the video using a stationary inexpensive land rover. The Tesla Ai does not assume the controlled safety conditions presented by the testers are in place. Most of the time it won't even sense the tighter parking spots and when it does, it does an absolutlely terrible job at parking. Plus it does it SO SLOWLY that you will hold up traffic for sure. Even in simple parking situations it will do the classic Tesla steering wheel jitter as it freaks out and decides what to do. I just never use auto park now. Cool suggestion. As a fairly long term Tesla owner now going on 5-6 years i can definitely feel the autopilot has got WORSE over that time. The issue is when it was 'dumb' and only focussed on keeping you in the lane, it is easy for it and did it easily. Then as they started asking more from it like auto lane changing and detecting more types of situations, it started getting more confused and started doing a lot more of those phantom braking situations and whatnot. The lane keeping is still basically perfect but the phantom braking and just random braking is really annoying and requires you to keep your foot on the accelerator attentively incase it brakes so you can accelerate to over rule it.

I can tell you that my MY with enhanced auto pilot it’s an absolute dream when there’s zero traffic on the motorway. In light traffic it just about does okay, in heavy traffic it simply too dangerous to use. In Stop start traffic it will induce vomiting as it leaves breaking to the last minute and then jerks you as it accelerates way too hard to catch up with the traffic which is moving at 2 miles an hour. I could almost understand this IF it wasn't accurately seeing where the lane markers were (tho this would be a huge, but different problem altogether). My mates AMG Merc however drove up a kerb with ultra low profile tyres and did some slight damage to the rim...

My frustration with self-parking has been going almost a whole car length beyond the space before it decides you can park in it. Meanwhile any cars behind you are on your tail getting angry and someone else has just driven forward into the space, mounting the curb and risking harm to anyone walking on the path in the process. I stopped using it as it's often quicker to park yourself.

I find your videos to be VERY INFORMATIVE and that means a lot to me. You supply GREAT CONTENT and it helps me (in my opinion) from a consumer standpoint to make the best informed decision on a current or future purchase. I live in the US and your videos are just refreshing to say the least. You point out things that most dealers wouldn't even tell you, do things to prep the cars before sale that most US dealers wouldn't and provide services that help the customer have a better customer experience overall. NOW THAT'S CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!! The Audi e-Tron self parked well, but was just so noisy and I must admit it did get the tightest space to the curb (IMPRESSIVE). The BMW i4 M50 did it (IMO) twice perfectly and I would say Exactly in the same spot with same curb gap (REALLY IMPRESSED BY THAT)!!!! It actually caught me off guard. The Ford Mach-E did it perfectly as well, but I did notice that the front end curb space was closer than the rear. NOW, The Tesla Model S (#1 Black) was downright horrible...it was almost like it was trying to figure out what to do "in the process" of actually parking and at one point...I was like ("is it learning as it parks??"). I think the amount of parking space makes a difference and the Year Model of the Tesla may play a factor in how much better it self parks (IMO). The "pedestrian" was somewhat annoying, but I can understand why it stops because the car is just being cautious. IF I BUY a Tesla Model S, it will DEFINITELY be an AP1 - Pre 2017 version because the self parking software was HELLA BETTER!!!! WOW, shocked the Tesla's didn't recognize the parking space inside the building whether it was the Model 3 or Model S. That Totally Disappointed ME!!!! Parallel Park: BMW, Audi, Ford, Tesla (AP1) Inside Bldg - Back In - Park: Ford, Audi, BMW, XXTESLA(N/A)XX

The Ford and BMW systems both use Mobileye, they are the same systems but slightly tweaked. Tesla AP1, the one that actually parks well, uses an old version of Mobileye too. Later Tesla versions use Tesla's own hardware and software, which is why its actually worse. The reason Elon moved away from Mobileye was because he wanted to market the cars as self driving, and Mobileye refused to do that due to safety. When AP2 came out, to nobodies surprise a bunch of Tesla's crashed and killed the drivers.

That model S autopark was hilarious. xD I mean I have model 3 FSD and it does the parking just fine. Tested it many times on parallels, normal spots, garage autopark etc. All works fine. I just stated to wonder if theres differencies in U.S. and european parking space which contradicts with code. I've noticed you need to leave a bit of space to the side for tesla to detect parking space.

I've given up using it takes forever and doesn't make the park in the end. Real shame just like the entire FSD in the UK really. Heck it can't even read speed camera signs on the active motorways yet....

Here is their focus. Just released 10.69 Beta FSD The parking is on the non-maintained branch of software. Guess what, it will be great at parking too, as it can drive confidently like this already: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oKmEptaJl7zIe3U.html

@@My_HandleIs_ Sorry, but until they can actually fix basic functionality like auto park and until they actually address the phantom braking problem, I remain unconvinced. And while auto park is merely a nuisance, phantom braking is an actual safety issue. I have little sympathy for the fanboys who attack NHTSA for investigating reports into phantom braking (and even less for Munro, who should damn well know how important safety in the car industry is). Particularly when personally I’ve had after several instances when phantom braking nearly caused someone to crash into my car on the motorway, and as a result I simply don’t use autopilot at all in heavier traffic. I have no interest in endangering my family because Elon and his team are not focusing on fixing problems. And that’s after paying several thousand pounds for FSD.

I could imagine that the parking system from BMW and Audi (maybe even the Mustang) come from VDO. That is the biggest german producer of car instruments and navigation systems (2 of my ex-colleagues went there). Would fit perfectly into their portfolio. And when you have a specialized company concentrating on such tasks, over MANY car manufacturers, you combine all these experiences and are way faster way more efficient. And you program more efficient: You design a general algorithm for each situation that is built that it is configurable over a parameter set. With that you can tell the manufacturer quickly "ey, to be able to do this and that, we need a little more of this and that", e.g 5 degrees more steering angle, or sensors placed where to be able to get 5 cm nearer.

Another great video but the take away for me was how impractical alloy wheels are when they cause this much worry and heart ache. Or perhaps it is the kerbs at fault. Councils need to fit foam rubber kerbs to protect these delicate wheels!!!!!

Very informative and entertaining, especially the messed up part from Tesla. It's like people with bad eyesight trying really hard to adjust their parking and failed miserably everytime! Had a good laugh from that 😂. Also, not sure why the lack of constant beeping in the i4 made me anxious... I don't really trust self-parking tech yet, probably 😅. I saw some Taycans in your garage and wondering why you didn't include it in this test, but I assume it utilises the same system as the Audi e-tron, right? 5:15 and 6:23 and I thought my Google Assistant triggered... 🤭

Thanks for the video Richard, I’m not surprised at all having previously owned self parking BMWs, Volvos and Audis - and now own a Tesla MY. Quite frankly I am extremely disappointed in the self parking capabilities of the Tesla. Enhanced auto pilot also induces vomiting in the stop start traffic in a way that the other cars did not. Still happy with the Tesla as an overall package, just really hope they improve these things sooner rather than later.
