The extremely overdiagnosed 'IT Band Syndrome' needs to be re-conceptualized as new data, methods, and techniques as to what is causing this common issue as well as how to treat it.

Wow. You open the video talking about how stupid your patients are and how annoying you find it when they try to understand physiology for themselves. "I have runners that come in ... I'm not knocking any of them ..." Actually, that's exactly what you're doing. You're the professional. Got it. Maybe try explaining the material in an accessible way. Your content is rapid-fire and your visuals are barely visible. This could have been a really useful video.

Do you need your hand held at all your visits to the doctor? Take the holistic approach and watch a dozen or more of his videos and try to absorb his many nuggets of wisdom/expertise through HIS teaching style without worrying so much about your psyche. I've learned more about my own physical shortcomings in the past hour watching his videos than I did on my last two expensive visits to an orthopedist. This is gold...and it's free, so dial back your sensitivity.

Things it could be: Bursa inflamed, irritated nerves in fat pad, could be different nearby muscle or tendon(popliteus), could even be referred pain from higher up, lateral meniscus, distal hamstring attachments, other, maybe closer to skin for some. It's not the patients fault, it's usually the doctors and physio or even the literature that label everything there as IT band.

Thanks a lot for that! I’ve been having pain right next to my right knee after running a little too early and to eagerly after a marathon. The pain always starts after 6 or so miles and disappears within minutes after a run. I wear a compressing knee bandage for now and I purposefully work on my knee stability, glute strength, hip flexors, mobility and most importantly on my running technique. No foam rolling. I worked by way up to running pain free with the bandage, without the bandage I walk pain free and I can do little sprints to the trains pain free too, I’m still keeping it on for regular runs as a precaution but going against all that foam rolling and other tips that are out there meant actual progress for the first time for me.

Saw your comment and I’m going through the same issue right now. I’m training for a marathon and ran too much too quickly. I stopped running for 2 to 3 weeks and foam rolling and stretches for the IT band. Do you recommend any bandages as it seemed to work for you. Anything particular you did or currently doing that helped?

@@chirofarmnot a real professional response there…. When a physio says “I don’t know… whatever”. When giving advice it detracts from the message. The plastic wrap and spaghetti analogy was perfect. Also the insight about not further irritating the nerve with rolling. Would there be some effective stretches recommended for releasing some of the reassure there?

Thank you. Great info. This is definitely the first time I have heard this term. After 5 months of dealing with an injury no one has suggested this is something that could be ruled in or ruled out. The initial problem healed over a month ago, but this pain was different and it has lingered. That is exactly where I am experiencing the pain (and pulling sensation). Anyhow, at least I am now armed with more knowledge. And can better explain to my chiro the issue I am dealing with.

Brilliant! Thank you so much for taking the time to share this much needed info❣️In fact, I have been having excruciating pain exactly in the area you mention and after trying all of the exercise treatment for IT band without any relief I on my own thought to grab the tissue and pull on it while walking or going down steps mainly bcuz it hurts and noticed it seemed to relieve the pain. Your video completely explains why and validates to keep doing it. Granted I look silly grabbing and pulling the tissue with one hand while walking but I’ll keep it up anyway and work knee stability. Your video helps me to know I’m on the right track where no other doctor on this channel speaks to this in my research of the last 2 years. Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart!

The outside of my right knee gets inflamed when i apply resistance to it. For example imagine going downstairs, the moment when all the weight is on the right leg. Or imagine running downhill and you try to constantly slow down. That's the "negative force" i am talking about. I could hike uphill forever, but would only last 5 min downhill. Does it sound like IT band syndrome?

I was also diagnosed with IT band syndrome and I haven't believed it from day one. I'm curious though. My pain is centralized about 6 or 7" above the area you pointed out. The pain I experience is is throbbing or stabbing. I imagine this is what nerve pain would be described as.... I'm assuming our nerves run all the way up-and-down out legs, so is it possible pain would present itself to in a different position on the side of the leg? I recently tried using a tens machine on my hip and the next day the pain was was pretty bad. Could this have been making it worse? Lastly, is there any way any sort of imaging would be able to aid in the correct diagnosis of this problem if the doctor knew what he was looking for? I appreciate any help you can give an answering my questions. Thanks for the info

I just found you. Very nice video. My wife had a bad fall onto her kneecap a number of years ago. The doctor did Meniscus surgery, then full knee replacement a number of years later, manipulations, Capsular relief and I'm probably forgetting something. The day after she had the replacement surgery she started having, what we were told was the IT Band issues (pain from her knee up the outside of the leg). All the doctors we talked to about the pain in her leg wanted to talk about the knee. No one has been able to diagnose it. She is past having therapy help IMO. You sound extremely knowledgeable and I was hoping you could point me in the right direction for a next step. Can the ITB be removed? Thank you very much for your time

Thanks for watching. First of all, any patient deserves a world-class exam, so I don't give out advice without having seen them in person. So I had an injury in a basketball game where my knee gave out/shot forward when I landed I felt the pain down the center of my knee and then moved to under my knee cap. Once I started walking on in again it hurt around the back/side of the knee right around the band in the area you circled. I got an MRI that was pretty inconclusive but they said there may be a small tear in my IT Band. It has now been a few months and I feel pain in that area you circled from standing for a long period of time or really from anything, but it is most severe from long stretches of standing or doing physical activities. By the end of the day nearly everyday I am in a pain that is kind of an achy/sharp/sore pain. It's been bothering me so much and hasn't really gotten any better so I've done some research and it's led me to believe this could be the answer. I also have a very bad knee injury history on my dad's side of the family. So I was just wondering your thoughts. Thanks
