The long wait is over, we are finally working on this Offroad Racer Pacer for the OnX Offroad Build Challenge. It has been tough as I have been trying to finish my shop while Rory @trailmater is in his busy season for recoveries. But as we get going you can see what we can accomplish in a hurry on this build. You will also get to see how big a Pacer actually is since they are a deceivingly large car. Don't forget to go to the OnX Offroad Website and vote for us!!

Cool to see all working on an old AMC. My grandson and I are bringing back an AMC Eagle wagon 4 wheel drive. It is an 83. I have owned it since 86. Parking about 15 years ago. He claimed it when he was two . Now it's going to be his first High School car

Those Eagle 4WD Wagons were cool and freaking awesome in the snow and there wasn't much that would stop them in it either, if you had decent snow tires you always got to work and back in bad weather, even in Icy road conditions the 4WD shortened your braking distance with the gearing/steering and braking lightly, living in the great white north it proved itself capable, they started good in the cold, they just needed better heaters 👍

A detailing clay bar will be your best bet imo to get the sap off without hurting anything. ive taken off sap, hwy road paint, concrete, an numerous types of overspray with a clay bar.

One thing about the desert and old cars sitting low to the ground. Rattlesnakes! Always check before getting in and sitting down. If the cars have holes, they'll get in.

I don't care what anyone says about the AMC Pacers, I have liked them since they were first built. The little fish bowl and its "bigger" brother the wagon version were always cool looking to me. I could see a mildly cammed 304/4bbl or a 6.0 LS with an automatic transmission hooked to a 12 bolt LSD with 3.73 gears. Fully polyurethane bushed and refitted suspension. Tint the windows to help out the AC and away I'd go. Plus LED all lighting, interior and exterior. Would really like to do this to a wagon version. A streetable 4x4 with guts out of a AMC Eagle 4WD would be nice too.

Ya know, the easiest way to mate the two rigs together, take that body up as High as you can and let her drop, she will find her way onto that frame right quick and in a hurry like, where she lands, that's where you bolt it down! Cool Build, cant wait to see it done and winning!

I bought a new loaded 1982 6.2 diesel Silverado 2 WD long for $11,800. It was a descent rig. Regretted not spending $1,500 more for a new 4x4 Silverado. Awesome Pacer.

For the sap, hand sanitizer works great. The consistency helps it stay on the sap to soften it and get it ready to wipe off.

Isopropyl Alcohol will easilly dissolve old, thick, tree sap deposites. I used it on my daughter's Mazda 3. It worked quickly and easily. It did not harm the paint at all. Wax around it for extra protection if you want to but I didn't bother and it was fine.

Brings back memories for me. Not saying I'm an old fart but my first job out of HS was working heavy line at an AMC dealer. My very first car was a Pacer with a cracked exhaust manifold which was very common. Weird cars for sure.

There's a guy in Australia did a similar swap with a subaru onto a jeep. He lowered the body as much as possible without any major changes, then made infill panels to cover the gaps. His channel is "doin stuff" if you want to get some ideas.

Man I remember when I got my first chance to work with a lift and an overhead crane out at my buddy's farm. I learned a lot there and while I still get stuff done, every freaking time I'm wrestling drive train parts out of a rig on my back I wish I had a shop tall enough for a lift. I beat myself up pretty bad when I was younger racing MX, mountain bikes, skiing, etc. I'm also not nearly as strong as I was in my 20's, and those old injuries hurt more at 32. Maybe someday. I get to do another clutch in a Toyota soon and we almost hit 100 degrees today. My garage still isn't insulated. First world struggles I know but damn it would be nice to not melt while working on stuff.

I need that motor and transmission , my dad and I built a buggy way back 1991 we used the engine and trans from a Gremlin, I recently found that old buggy parked in a pasture motor locked up yeah nostalgia spend time turning wrenches with my dad, I bought that old buggy, funny I gave the lady junk price think it cost me $50 dollars more than it cost to build the first time .

You use isopropyl alcohol on tree sap, like the stuff you get at the drugstore. It's pretty weak compared to other forms of alcohol, so you normally can't damage anything with it. You will basically need to wear the sap down layer by layer, so it can take a while. Some people cut the top off of large drops with a single edge razor blade laid flat so it doesn't take as long, but you need to be careful. If you heat it up it can help, but don't go overboard or you'll burn the paint. More like hairdryer hot vs heat gun hot (and definitely not torch hot).

Tree sap, I was going to comment before about the pacers tree sap. I just assumed someone would suggest acetone, it works great for tree sap/pitch. I live in western Canada and cedar/fir/maple tree sap is a common issue for me. Or borrow some nail polish remover, which is mostly acetone. Acetone also has a lot of other shop uses, like cleaning up epoxy etc.

@@coltbuildsit Sounds a little bitter. I was watching Fab Rats and Chad Fab work together on their build earlier. I am ignorant to any rules set forth in the OnX challenge. I always thought it was a two man thing from past challenges. No big deal, it really only changes how complete your individual builds can get by a certain timeline.

You know, the Pacer was built in Kenosha, WI, the same state as Mike. Maybe a good name for the Pacer is the Kenosha Krawler. BTW, I don't agree with Ian on the sales of parts. If you add $7k for your jeep, you should be able to deduct whatever you get out of the tub and front clip. Selling the drivetrain of the original pacer is kind of a wash, but the body of the jeep should be reconsidered.

crazy idea for you. Allow in your rear suspension design (3 or 4 link?) ability for rear axle to rotate at a central point. Not sure how much the most heavy duty U joint you can get will allow you to let axle swing a turn a smidge (Like front axle on a red kids pull wagon) then... incorporate hydraulic rams into/above one link on each side? s (aka... they will need to telescope some) Tada... you just built a poor mans rear steer, with a none steer rear axle.
