It's time to go Lithium. My house batteries are starting to get some age to them and I have decided to change to a lifepo4 system. Let us show you how we go about it and see if it changes my life. • Lithium Conversion
We cruise extensively along the East Australian Coast on our 13 meter catamaran. Join us as we explore new cruising grounds, cross bars, fix all kinds of problems, ride out rough weather and live aboard for extended periods.
We even have a playlist that gets us on other peoples boats.
We hope that our videos encourage others to get on board and experience this fantastic lifestyle.

I recently put a 5kv Victron , lithium system on my boat, I find the Victron touch screen beneficial monitoring the batteries and usage, all this power takes a bit of getting used to, but a great benefit to lifestyle so far , the hardest part was many trips collecting the many bits and pieces needed to do a proper job ,

CORRECTION just watched the video and saw a major blunder on my part. The Enerdrive DC to DC charger doesn't have the facility to charge 3 battery banks. That's the Enerdrive charger. Had a seniors moment there! Also should point out I didn't show fuses and circuit breakers etc in that drawing. These are always necessary and the drawing was more about giving Norm a overview of what we need in the way of major items. Sorry for that blunder

Thanks Norm. It’s great for us that you have started this planning process. It will help us with our decisions when that time comes. We are currently planning how to make it all work with our Cat C7 main , beta wing engine and our Perkins 8kva genset. We definitely don’t want to run our genset just to make a cuppa so it’s going to be interesting for us especially if we can move away from the idea of a gas cooktop
@MotorSailingforOldDudes
@MotorSailingforOldDudes 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks dudes. My plan exactly. I will only use the genset as a back up (6kva). The lifepo4 will suck up the 120amps the inverter charger delivers.

A lot has changed using lithium in last couple of years as they have all sorts of tech and use lithium phosphate chemistry . We use in 4x4 and vans and perfect for off grids and big power demands !!

I should use the terminology lifepo4. There are a few lithium chemistries available. Lifepo4 is definitely the most stable.

Hi Norm Lithium Iron Phosphate ( LiFePO4 ) is the way to go...which is what you are getting Dont call them Lithium Ion , Totaly different battery chemistry... will put shivers thru many people for boat use especally Insurance ( However some people have reused Tesla and Chev Leaf ( LI-Ion ) battey bank-Cells BUT you have to know what you are doing ) Cheers Tim

Correct dude. I should stop being lazy. Saw a good KZfaq vid recently on the different chemistries and just how safe lifepo4 was. Thanks for the comment.

Hi Norm, Looking forward to your installation. We still have AGMs on the houseboat but with 780a/h and 900w of panels we only seem to start the genset to make sure it’s still running okay. Admittedly we have gas cooking and hot water but the inverter let’s us run so many things that’s it like being at home.

Seeing your doing this put the new panels in a line connected by a rod joined to each panel and use a geared motor to have the panels follow the sun.

Gooday Norm you old salty sailor! Great move mate - this is same concept as I have in my landcruiser - std starter battery linked to a hybrid using a Redarc SBI12 so I can link them in an emergency and then I use a 170ah Lithium with BMS for 75 litre fridge, camp lights and plug in accessories charging from both an Enerdrive 180w solar panel + alternator via a Redarc BCDC1250 charger. I went with Giant batteries as they are Aussie and come with a 5 year warranty Good luck mate - love it!

Norm! I really enjoy your channel and love how you think, present and communicate,, so much so, that I feel obligated to pass on a few points if I may. There have been a few honest mistakes in this video. The dcdc 40+ doesn't have multiple charging banks. Only the enerdrive AC40 battery chargers have the 3 banks. The dcdc only charges a single battery, with both dc and solar input. It does nicely allow you the select the output amperage in 5 amps steps. Lithium battery chargers are indeed constant amperage, but not constant voltage. Have a look at the enerdrives lithium battery charging profile, through the different stages. You get what you pay for, and enerdrive has some of the best algorithms for lithium battery charging around. Definitely get the enerdrive epro plus monitor. Its essential and will tell you exactly how much power is going in and out, and exactly how much capacity is remaining in your bank. The bluetooth BMS's are ok, but they don't register small draining currents and easily get out of cycle if you leave the boat for a while. The monitor can also show the voltage on a second bank (engine) so you can also monitor that from the one little monitor screen. Don't rely on a phone! Phones and Bluetooth connection issues, drop outs - its all so painful. One indepandent monitor to tell you everything! And it has low voltage alarm set points and capacity levels to help your protect your hugely expensive battery investment. Run a BLUE SEA 5196 off your battery bank. Then all your chargers and inverters can connect to that , and be safely fused. Its so neat, tidy and you'll just have one single battery lead going the he battery bank. Safe, neat, functional. Also - install a master isolator switch! If you ever have a smoke and fumes event onboard, you response plan would be to run directly to the master cutoff and isolate 800amphours of potential energy. Once the battery disconnects, the chargers all sense the voltage potential loss and disable output voltage. So that one master isolator not only isolates the battery, but also disables all the solar regs, chargers and inverters. Safety critical,.as they say. Wish I could show you my trailer boats enerdrive electrical system. Id love to pass on all my knowledge so you get an electrical system that's absolutely faultless and perfectly tuned to your needs. Cheers legend!

Absolutely correct Scott. The Enerdrive DC/DC only does one bank. I had a bit of a seniors moment there. Your also correct on the fact that Lithium chargers are constant current but not voltage. I should have explained myself better there. I'm using that power supply ONLY as a backup should the main charger fail and that type of charger will do the job as a short term fix only. Also we intend to use a Victron BMV 702 Battery monitor, fuses, circuit breakers and battery isolation switches as would be normal practice. Thanks for your input and appreciate the way you commented without being negative. Cheers Bruce

Gday Norm. You mentioned weight was a factor in your decision to go 2x400 amp hour batteries instead of 1x800. As a matter of interest, what were their respective weights?
@MotorSailingforOldDudes

I'm not sure Leonard, The 400ah battery is 47.8kg. Imagine the 800ah battery would be twice that. It was not liftable for old dudes... That's for sure.

@@MotorSailingforOldDudes I had 4x350 a/h lead acids in Aquanita, all mounted to port in the bow. Double disadvantage - huge weight resulted in 10° list to port and only around 50% of power was usable- one of the many disadvantages of lead acid batteries. I believe you will have access to more than 90% of available amperage. Good luck
