I hear you about Florida crowds, AND about staying in one place/getting bored. Now starting our 4th FT year…what we have evolved to is travel from March-November/December. Then we volunteer for 3 months at a National Park site. We work 3 days as “interpretive volunteers”, greeting visitors, answering questions, and my favorite part , hiking the trails to see if people have questions. Our first time at this was Sunset Crater Volcano in Flagstaff…we were there from Labor Day to mid November. It was the perfect base. On our 4 days a week off, we took the rig over to the Grand Canyon, up to Page, down to sedona, etc. Last winter we were at Fort Sumter in Charleston, and this winter, we’re doing Casa Grande near Phoenix. For us, 3 days of volunteer work is just the right amount to keep from being bored…and since we pick new spots every year, it’s always a new area to explore. Safe travels to you both.

There's plenty of rural land in FL. Living in an RV resort is like living in a residential neighborhood. Can't have your cake and eat it too. We still like FL in the Winter. Don't forget the long term. Access to excellent medical facilities is important beginning in retirement age. Living in rural areas can be problematic.

I remember thinking that purchasing the RV property as you guys did was smart, that you would probably see quite an appreciation on it. We understand about the crowds in Florida, especially in winter when the snowbirds are here. But to an extent, it depends on what part of Florida you are in. We searched for a place to move to here 18 years ago and were pretty dismayed by all the traffic. However, we found what we think is one of the nicer, less crowded locations in the Crystal River area, which is about an hour and a half north of Tampa. You will still see a bit of an increase in traffic in the winter, but nowhere near as much as other parts of the state. That said, we are seeing a surge in development here with new shopping centers and homes going up. Also, the Suncoast Parkway extension is making the area more easily accessible. From our perspective Florida is still an attractive state for retirees for numerous reasons.

From a retired Deputy in a high crime area, it’s great to be retired and can’t imagine what it’s like to work the streets day in and day out any more. After being retired 6 years now I’m letting my guard down somewhat. I know it’s good to be hyper vigilant for safety sakes but it’s take a lot out of you when it’s time to relax. I stay away from big cities for the most part, I love the RV community, and I mostly leave my gun at home or in the car. You might say WHAT!!! That’s what i need to relax. I’d die for many, but I know longer want the lifestyle while now retired. I hope you retire soon, find your bliss, and let your guard down a little. Never though I would, but 2-3 years after retirement I did. Still part-timing and have a home as well but we spend months on the road as well.

I would loosely classify this under the similar category as a "time share" type investment. If you use it regularly it might be worth it otherwise you have to justified paying fees, loans, taxes, etc. Then you have to compare any return on investment to any other financial investment. Even CD's are paying 5% now.

I've looked at properties in FL for several years. Once I took off my rose colored glasses and objectively looked at life and pros and cons, it became clearer that it doesn't make sense to buy a property in FL or anywhere. It's easy to blow money. I had convinced myself to buy a smaller RV to downsize as we get older. That really doesn't make long-term sense either. I'm tired of blowing money on rapidly depreciating RVs. As I get older, I am less inclined to RV living. My neighbors just sold their RV because it's not comfortable for senior living. It isn't.

Overcrowding in a warm climate in the winter…I AM SHOCKED. You and every other person wants to be where it’s warm. We live in a very uncrowded place in the summer, so when we get to FL in October we are looking forward to seeing lots of active people and being busy. Good luck.

I understand the 10 year rule, but places like this are very strict on it too. No leeway, just like not allowing Super C's or travel trailers no matter how nice they look. $200,000 plus HOA of at least $350, and HOA's always go up, you could buy a house with RV space and rent the house out for a lot more for your investment. There just really isn't any investment like buying a house/condo that will appreciate in value faster than buying into places like this. This is a bad investment, that's why everyone sells.

Hello Izzy and MJ! I am not surprised about your upcoming sale of your RV lot in FL. As you approach closer to retirement, I feel like you two would like to better keep your options open as to where you "settle down". So, last year we did multiple trips to Mexico to recon areas to consider part timing in the winters once I quit work. They were a lot of fun and we really enjoyed it. But...this and that were going on, so we decided to shift our look to the US. We live at 8000 feet in Colorado; and the winter is real. So, we kind of decided to look at an area from Tucson AZ to Palm Springs CA. So, in April, we did a 2 week camping trip to Palm Springs. We also picked a mobile home on Zillow to look at as it had been recently renovated. Ha...this led to that, and before you know it, we were considering condos. And then to complicate it, we started looking at houses too. We ended up putting an offer in on a condo that was almost 5x's the price of the mobile home. Not exactly what I wanted to do as I paid off our CO house in November 2022 and we were debt free. Now, my thoughts of quitting work at 60 yrs old (in 5 yrs) are pretty much sunk as we have a mortgage again. But...we are 3 blocks from downtown Palm Springs and there is a ton of stuff to do! So...I get it with regards to continuing your winter haven look!!

We had a class A , 42' Alegro Bus by Tiffin. It did ok for us but we had breakdowns, we had trouble just getting it around in some campsites. We just bought a Renegade 38' Explorer and so far it's been a lot better for us. Its newer, so the likelihood of breakdowns is less, and the size will be easier to operate in some camp rounds with a Jeep Wrangler in behind.

My wife and I purchased at Cypress Trail RV Resort in Ft Myers. It is located on the outskirts of town so traffic is manageable. Certainly if we head toward the beach things intensify quickly. The resort allows for more than one type of RV which gives a nice blend of various RV styles. The resort is gorgeous and maintained to the highest degree. I understand wanting to travel but for us we enjoy the wonderful weather of Fort Myers and south in the winter. We have no desire to travel anywhere else north this time of year. From time to time we will hook up our 5th wheel and take a side trip further south to the Keys but for most of the winter we simply enjoy our sunny spot in Fort Myers. Best of luck on your future travel and winter decisions.

We owned Lot 23 at Myakka from June 2021 until this last March, and sold it because we found a small “home base” house with a RV garage at a wonderful RV community in East Central Florida. We agree, great place, great people and a very active friendly bunch. A ton of activities during the season; you do not get bored! Absolutely gorgeous views of the Myakka River and amazing sunsets. Yes, the area gets a bit crowded in the winter.

LOL I am from FL. I hate crowds too. I grew up in Fort Myers and remember even back in the early 80's there was no Interstate past the Tampa Area and the bridge going over to Fort Myers Beach was a floating raft you drove across. How that has changed! Now I live in St. Augustine and it is booming here! I retired from teaching in 2017. My plans have really changed. I bought the Airstream in 2013 as a hunted floorpan used model figuring I would retire in 2016. Years later I am still working! I went back to teaching in 2018 and plan to teach one more year now and retire in 2024. My Airstream is now 17 but I have remodeled it and it looks new at least on the inside. I have only used it so far as a vacationer with my longest trip 3 weeks.

Amen on the over-devolped and over-crowded. For seven winters we have been doing Florida. This last Winter we stayed near Orlando (Sanford) for 3 months, and decided we may be done with Florida because we feel like Florida has become New York City South, with the rude and crazy drivers. We used to be able to go south on 27 past Lake Wales and head toward the Keys on what seemed an abandoned road that was so relaxing; not this year. So, we may visit Florida, but not spend a lot of time there. Have RV, will travel... key word, travel. That's what motorhomes and trailers are for.

Yes it is crowded in the winter with all the snowbirds. For the last few years we have spent Jan in Indian Shores FL renting a beachfront condo....REALLY wish we had bought one of those 7 years ago when we could have bought in the building we rent for mid 300K, now for sale in that building is low 700K. :( Guess I am really surprised you are selling if the winter rent pays for the place, but I know how plans change.....(see above 4 years turned into 40 in IN) LOL Looking forward to seeing y'all again in Jan.

We looked at Myakka 7 years ago and several other resorts in Florida and decided on the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area of Alabama for the very reason you outlined. It can get crowded during holidays but it's still pretty laid back the rest of the time. We have found that having the property has allowed us to enjoy this area several times each year while still traveling around North America and having virtually no expenses for the property because it rents most of the time we're not there. I also agree about the class A only restrictions. I'm hopeful most resorts will realize that they need to expand the RV classes allowed because the class A market is the smallest in the RV industry which limits the market for the resort. Keep in mind as you think about buying a super C that a lot of the resorts you want to stay at when you retire won't allow your super C so that is definitely something to consider before you purchase one. Hope you find something that fits your needs better in the future.

Good luck with your sale and understand you’re thinking, however Florida is still a great state to stay during the winter months. If I’m not wrong, most you’re traveling in Florida has been around the Florida RVs show on I-4 or I-75 near Port Charlotte/Fort Myers areas both are crazy with traffic at peak time. The East Coast and West Coast of southern Florida also very busy with traffic. Central Florida near Orlando/Disney is also very busy, but there is still plenty of areas Left in Florida where traffic is not a problem. I have lived in Florida for 61 years, now in Auburndale FL. You learn to use state roads to go North-South East-West. Some other benefits of Florida are low cost of living, no state income tax. Low property taxes. No matter where you go in Florida there’s water, oceans on both sides and lakes everywhere. Some other fun facts, more golf courses in Florida than any other state, 175 state parks. Theme parks and professional sport teams and my favorite two NASCAR tracks… good luck guys safe travels..

We will never buy a lot in Florida. I had many chances as far back as 2006. Nope, not for us. We will rent and move to where we want to when we want to go. This year we spent 3 months in Florida. Mostly along each coast and the panhandle. Going to different areas has the advantage of more choices of restaurants and things to do. Doing the same thing next yr. We even did 2 weeks in South Carolina and Virginia on the way north in late March early April.

The rule about super Cs is silly The majority of them are well into the 500k + price range Andrew Steele has shown some brands like 1492 that are as expensive as High end Newmars 1.5 million .I get the don't want my junky 1985 champion [class A] but its more reasonable to just approve each RV then exclude a whole class of them

Sure they can just like a HOA can say you can't park a certain type of vehicle in you own driveway it's part of the ownership contract you agree to terms and conditions or you don't get in

@@Scott924m A business can't use disparate treatment in limiting one RV, and not another. It's either all or none. Maybe on length, or size of the vehicle. But, not on an individual basis. Say, yours looks too clunky, but the big shiny one behind you is ok. That's a no no. You could be sued.

Fully understand and may have mentioned this with the surprise that bought the property. As a native Floridian currently living in Orlando, wife from Miami, and spending my adolescence when gas wars were $0.25 or less per gallon, and computers/games didn't exist, I really got out to know the roads. While nothing wrong with Ft Meyers, Naples, Ft Lauderdale, Miami, Keys, or Palm Beach, it is a long, long, long drive over basically 3 roads just to get out of the State of FL! With the goal of RV to travel, you don't want to travel those same 3 roads that are increasingly congested as it is the only choice for others as well. While it is a little colder, not intolerable, consider North Florida - Big Bend, Panhandle, and Atlantic Coast (I perfer the Gulf) Flagler Beach north. At any of those places you can get out of the State quickly and potentially have different angles of exit. There are established RV resorts, but also the other extreme of rural property like Traveling Roberts has near Perry. Good luck with your future and RV endeavors.

Buying or developing your own RV Park is definitely something worth considering in my opinion. It’s from people such as yourselves that really know what’s needed and what’s lacking. Land in America is very inexpensive in comparison with the rest of the world as there’s so much space with amazing views. One of the first properties I ever saw was an amazing opportunity to buy an RV Park and I missed it by a day or so as the realtor bought it himself. Over 100 acres with about half developed. A boat landing on a stunning river was not being used. Club house and supermarket and so many possibilities… In 2 years it’s worth more than double the investment and has yet to reach its potential. It’s definitely something I could see you guys doing. There’s even a property for management etc. Just keep your eyes open and something very special will stare at you and hey presto another life awaits ♥️🕊️💫

Wintering in FL is not vacation I tell my friends and family. You are living there. People from all over the country and Floridians don’t give you any courtesy on the rd because the don’t like seeing out of state plates in traffic during the winter.

We have lived in FL (St Petersburg) for 25 years and really like it here but will freely admit that certain areas are getting really crowded. The issue I have is that when we travel by car, or RV, it takes a while to get out of the state. That being said the weather in winter is really great!

Buyers remorse happens. This is a very common problem with some of the people from N.J. , Conn. , and N.Y. They claim to want to get away from all the traffic and crowds, ect. But they want everything they had but just non of the negatives. Then when they get there they slowly transfer that place into the place they came from. There are alot of rural places in Florida but it may not have the pampered type of life your use to. You can not have it both ways. Sorry this sounds kind of harsh but I see it all the time. You showed woods behind you and said this is what you liked. But bought a high end luxury motorcoach lot in stead with 0 privacy or woods around you and in a busy area. But it did have a very exclusive life style. But like I said you can not have it both ways.

Well you don't really own anything you're actually it's kind of like a condo you don't really own anything you can't really do what you want to do your trapped really now if you said you were going to buy 5 acres and build a RV home at least you'd have five acres a buffer to keep people away from you and you can have your own well and so you have a chance to have some Independence
Buying an RV lot - EVERYTHING you need to know!
