Respectfully I understand and agree with the concept of buy a game you like or don't, however there is a bigger issue than people simply not liking it. I'm not sure comparing Hogwarts Legacy, a game made out of a purely fictional world, and Japan a real place with history and culture is very respectful. Ubisoft has completely ignored real history and culture, hence why Japan is upset over this. It's very disrespectful towards them and Ubisoft using the LGBTQ+ community as well as the black community as a shield against backlash is also unfair. I looked more into the issue as I was trying not to be biased but there were several issues pointed out by Japanese youtubers. All they want is for their history and culture to be represented appropriately. Ubisoft claims to make games off historical fact yet the only fact they used is that a man called Yasuke existed one time in Japan. In my opinion the petition probably won't do anything to the game however if it makes them feel heard. I think the issues go much deeper than just a video game and when people want to discuss issues or get their point across they get attacked for it. My opinion, if Ubisoft were to have been more historically accurate and given proper attention to customs/beliefs this would not be happening.

The difference between Hogwarts and this is that nobody is claiming Hogwarts actually exists and it’s based on historical fact. The petition is because Ubisoft used an actual person in Japan’s history, and in an interview, presented him as someone he isn’t and then proceeded to give him a title, and intentionally skewed westerners’ perspective of his importance to actual Japanese history. And when Japanese people who somehow got wind of their history being rewritten started to protest, Ubisoft CEO started attacking them, calling them malicious and hateful. Then, started to create a propaganda that Japanese people actually love it and those naysayers aren’t really Japanese. Now the people know that petition won’t really cancel the game, but it serves several purposes: 1, It gives attention to the historical revision happening right now so people would know that they are being mislead. 2. It gives Japanese players who are otherwise cut off from the English speaking community, towards whom the rewritten history is being marketed, a means to let the world know that all of that information is wrong. 3. To contradict the claim that it’s not the Japanese players who are angry at this misinformation. You’re saying people should have a choice whether or not to buy the game and you criticize this petition or protest against it. But you also have a choice to sign or not to sign the petition. Yet you’re protesting against said petition. Let the people present whatever option they want to present. Sign or don’t sign. Buy it or don’t buy it. I think before you talk about something controversial, you need to see the deeper issues involved in it - the arrogance of a western company (among others) to rewrite another country’s history, present it as based on fact all to make a profit. And these players had been looking forward to an AC set in feudal Japan. They want Ubisoft to kill this reprehensible game and make one that actually came from real research. I don’t see what the problem with that is, though. To be fair, I do think Ubisoft is catching all the flak because it dared to call the Japanese people protesting against it as “malicious” and “hateful” which intensified their anger. Thomas Lockey did this because Yasuke DID exist but he wanted to rewrite the history with his own fiction of Yasuke being a samurai without any evidence. He bribed wiki to make turn his fiction into a "real historical information about Yasuke". Many people felt for it just like you and your viewers.

But if Ubisoft should’ve replaced the generic character and create a new character without being racist, that could make Shadows a success. But let’s face it, the Triple-A gaming industry is broken and the growing modern AC games have been stale. One thing I will say about this controversy Alex, is that due to the so called "culture war" many people simply don't believe in keeping consistent standards when going against what they view as their "enemy". Companies as large as Ubi Soft can take a hit in sales even if they are viewed as a "DEI Flagship" to many people. So, Ubi Soft is not to concerned. Over all, I am glad that many have their freedoms to voice their opinions by any means (non violently). Such ways as a petition describing their disgust or the other way around. I'm hyped for this game. As Feudal Japan was one of the time periods in history that I wanted to see in an Assassin's Creed along with the Old West and the American Civil War. And I want to play this simply because I'm an Assassin Creed's fan. I 100% agree with you. While I have my issues with the game and Ubisofts' monetization decisions, I think trying to cancel the game is absolutely ridiculous. If the game is truly bad, then it will fail and they will get the message. If it's successful, then clearly the game is good enough to overcome whatever issues people have with it. At the end of the day what really matters is if the game is good.
