I think that's because many people see the fight for democracy and freedom more traditionally and externally; as fighting against a foreign threat/power. But at this stage in power for the US, while also considering its political landscape thanks to Trump, the likelihood of foreign takeover is becoming overshadowed by the erosion of democracy from within. You have an entire party working at all levels; local, state, and federal, to suppress votes, gerrymander, cast doubt on the validity of elections themselves and indeed all institutions (judicial, military, education, health, science, etc.) that are fundmental to this country, disguised as an ironic and insidiously named "America First" agenda for all the faux "patriots". All in a last gasp attempt to install their leader and his party of loyalists. The results and damage of which are still immeasurable from the last election + insurrection + fake elector scheme. I think people need to remember that just because we are not in an all out war with a foreign power, the fight to maintain democracy, within our own borders, is still as important as ever, if not more so. It's not something that is a natural state for human tribes, it is something that must be actively maintained and protected from human corruption and greed for power. The likes of which has consumed the Republican party at an accelerated speed, thanks to the combination of religious zealotry/agenda, cowardice, and a willing and desperate cult leader, solely out to save himself from accountability for a career of criminality. The country is at a new frontier in the fight for democracy, one in which Trump repeatedly uses divisive and vitriolic rhetoric against fellow Americans (of both parties) that don't "Tim Scott" themselves to him, this is not a time to be indifferent or complacent.

Campaigns to get people registered & to vote, campaigns & lawsuits for voting rights, strategies to protect elections from corrupt interference. Legal actions by the DOJ, state AGs, civil society groups & individuals. For justice & accountability. Community work, bringing people together to empower them to take action on issues they care about. In the long-term, building a society with better education, less inequality & more regard & care for others. Strengthening democratic institutions & guardrails of democracy. There’s no magic bullet, it’s a lot of work in a lot of areas over a long period of time. Every small effort matters.

Regarding addressing the MAGA followers. The experts make a lot of the same points. People in general respond more to people they trust, not to politicians or government leaders. MAGA people will not respond to facts, evidence or reason. And most certainly not to argument. What is driving them is deeper- a powerful emotional identification gained by exploiting powerful emotions of fear, anger, hatred, & the desire for connection. So, to break through is not easy. It needs a relationship of trust. The experts advise, if it’s possible, to keep a respectful relationship going. Reminding the person you care about them & respect them. Building trust & connection-being honest but not confrontational. Over time you can then plant seeds- ask questions, raise issues. The person will reject & reject but eventually a thought or question will take hold & develop over time in their mind. The people who’ve got out of MAGA say it takes a lot of time, it’s hard to get over the pride & shame involved in realising they’ve been lied to & exploited. They need connection & support through that, not humiliation. There are many helpful KZfaq videos on this.
