I was just thinking the other day, why aren't there more videos of people demonstrating these as pedal platforms and then boom! Here's the perfect video! Thanks for doing this Shane, I recently picked up the 100w head version and once you scoop out some of the harsher high frequencies it's brilliant as a pedal platform through the clean channel. Works great if you don't want to take a valve head for whatever reason or as a backup 👍

Marshall have nailed it with this one. They should do a stripped down version without effects (except reverb) and sell it as an entry level pedal platform. Who needs valves if the cleans are that crispy and defined anyway?

That’s essentially what the old valvestate amps were - I had a 40w. Version for years and used it live with pedals and it was incredible.

I totally agree. I thought the same thing looking for an amp lately, just put an effects loop on it. For me instead of reverb a presence nob would be nice. Also I really like the clean tone it has.

@@TheMichaelseymour it packed up sadly - a few decades of excellent service so it owed us nothing :). I’m using a Boss Katana now and pleased enough with that, along with an EHX OD Glove and Rabea Masaad Wild Fro, both of which sound great through it.

I took a chance on this amp a year ago, was barely any reviews but has definitely been an enjoyable amp with my strat. Simple to use and I find the presets good to go, usually crunch or OD-1. Looks amazing as well in the flesh.

Brilliant video! I have the 100w combo and the clean channel has great headroom. I made a stand for mine to bring it off the floor. It puts all the controls at a comfortable level. Being a heart patient it's been a great rehab for me. Keep up the great videos, it's great to see a fellow lefty.

Had this amp for a while. Got it for peanuts and it was always able to get me my tone. The gain was a little fuzzy like you said but overall it kicked butt.

From Leo: I had one for about a year. You are right, the amplifier itself is pretty good, the basic effects are usable. The gain stages are course and over the top, and the noise floor gets annoying. Good demonstration.

Many moons ago my home setup was a little Hotone British plugged into a 1x12 V30 cab and some pedals. An EQ pedal and an OCD type pedal going into front and a trem, delay, verb going into the loop. Some ppl played my setup and couldnt believe the tone that came out of it, it was amazing..

People that say they don’t like it, probably have not played with the settings enough. I’ve consistently used this amp for quite a while and it performs superbly to the point it is a permanent fixture in my studio and it’s used daily during practice… and during small gigs. Works absolutely great.

I got the amp just because of this video. I've been playing guitar for 30 years. Shane, you're right in this. It really sounds great with dirt pedals. Both the clean and crunch channels work well as a pedal platform. And the clean channel itself is really great as it gets little dirty as you crank the gain. Not many ss amps have both the gain and the volume control with the master volume. The onboard reverb is ok, other effects are quite weak, the chorus and the octave effects are okayish.

i have this amp and it is as good as you make it out to be! the cleans are amazing and crisp but the overdrive channels are gritty and warm. Everything you could want from a cheap marshall. Edit : This amp takes things like a ds-1 or any other scooped pedals really well 🤟🏻

Another contender for affordable and great pedal platform is the VOX Cambridge 50. It's nuTube with 12" speaker and has the obligatory models, but set clean it's very happy with my overdrives efx and strymon iridium. Best feature IMO is the attenuator which makes it perfect for home play.

Hello, I'm from Brazil, I'm subscribed to your channel and I agree with you, this Marshall line is a good option to play at home or jam with friends, good platform accompanied by pedals. And even I have something like that, a solid state Condor 15W with an amazing spring reverb box, a small Vox tonelab st pedalboard, Bad Monkey overdrive, I'm not a musician and that's fine with me. :-)

I have the MG 50 DFX from early 2000. Clean is warm, like a normal channel on a vintage Fender Bassman tweed. My friend said this and he has a vintage ‘59 Bassman. Great for pedals. I use the overdrive channel. I dime the bass and treble mids three quarters up. Loud amp! I have an AC30, Marshall DSL 100 with 1960A cab, Peavey Mace and more. The MG’s hold their own. Just have to know how to use them.

I have two of the massive mg 10's. No clean headroom to speak of but some really cool overdrive sounds with my pedalboard. They can get pretty loud when ran through my Marshall 4 X 12 wired for stereo.

A tiny Marshall will surprise you with its volume. My first amp was (is, I still own it) a Marshall G10 MK.II with the limited Park Speaker and I used to practice with a drummer with that little guy sitting on a coffee table.

A friend who does E-Waste salvage gave me a Marshall MG30 DFX (same but with xtra fx) and a Roland Cube 20 GX and yeah instant Wet Dry rig for the cost of an Electro Harmonix Blade+ pedal and some leads (that I bought from Sky 😉) (such a shame that these would have been scrapped due to them coming from a school and due to not being bought with sales tax on them initially so not allowed to re-sell, win for me I guess ) The onboard fx are meh but both are great little amps running clean and using pedals rather than built in stuff or trying to overdrive preamps , think the 10" speakers could be a bit of the secret sauce for these, they're very well matched with the overall Amp output.

Shane, I am just entering the world of pedals and am trying to decide between this amp and a Fender Champion 40 as a pedal platform. I will just use it for bedroom use, mostly with headphones(don't care about max volume). I play mostly clean or dad rock, no metal.Would you recommend one over the other? A lot of people think you need a huge rig to get big sound. Not the case. I used a crap old crate amp clean channel with a tube screamer and it was crazy loud without a Mic. Add the Mic and BOOM! Huge. Can do that with pretty much any amp that has a good clean. BTW, the crate amp was 15 watts if I remember.

i was looking for a back up amp for gigs ,,, the fender XL was 50 watts and i cant remember if it was as good a pedal platform but it must have been ....now i have to consider this ....but the extra 20 watts of the fender makes it that much more appealing in an "over the cliff " moment - if needed

I'm probably going to buy one of these. My daughter just started playing. I Have a Boss Katana MkII 50W that is great but I need another amp. I think the Marshall MG30GFX would be fun to pickup. Good deal for what it is. I was looking at fenders in the same price range but I like this a little better.

I have had the MG30CFX for a while now... I can't play guitar yet, but my son is trying now as well. I have been happy with this unit, and the matching 4 button pedal. Maybe it is time to get a pedal or 2 and play around with sounds other than what the amp does. Do you think this would work equally well with a Headrush MX5? The only thing I think lacks about this amp is no FX loop, guess that is the case for the 12" 50W version. I have been looking into adding a second comparable amp, but with an FX loop, so I can jam with my son, or so he can jam with a friend. What would you suggest to go along with this one? Had an eye on Crush 35RT maybe, but kinda want a 12"....this little 30W DOES get loud though... Thanks for the content!

I remember having an original MG series amp (Didnt have the effects, just reverb). I thought it was a pretty good amp for the $, along with the Transtube Peavey amps they were my fav cheaper SS amps in the late 90's. I have not used one in over 20 years, so I have no idea how the new ones are.

Marshall together with Vox make some great solid state amps at a reasonable price. I like an amp with an eq and reverb. I am past my modelling days. I’m maybe wrong but I don’t see equivalent amps from Fender. I’m using my old fender mustang 1 V2 as a Fender Tweed deluxe and I do not see a reasonable priced equivalent in the Fender range.

I watched your last review on this and it sounded awesome, yet the reviews on the net are not that good, lot of people say it sounds crap, maybe they are not as good a player as you. I guess this would work well with my NUX MG 300? Looking at ordering one of these with an Ibanex GRGR131BKF from Thomann. Looks good value for 150 euro.

Yeah. Interesting. I guess my thought here there are so many similarly priced options that provide an excellent pedal platform (Boss Katana 50 handles pedals really well), it’s not a strong selling point.

Being the 30GFX, all the pedals have to go into the front end. There is no FX loop on the 30W amp. However the 50GFX has a FX loop. I wouldn't really call the 30W a pedal platform. Great sounding though. Thanks Shane ! Blues On....💙

What he meant by pedal platform is, the amp is set to clean without any fx on the amp is being used. Every fx is coming from the pedalboard.

I like my mg ,but my 1971 fender princeton ,has a different sound with pedals ,I like them both for different things ,the fender sounds more vintage ,but not as much power as far as volume .

Shane do you have a video of bedroom suitable amps that works great with pedals or multi effects? I am looking for one since I think my Fender Mustang 2 is overkill it's too loud and the effects are wasted on me. I saw some vox pathfinder 10, marshall mg & valvestate series and orange microterror with 1x8 cab and I don't know which one will work best with me.

Hi. This is the only amp I own, and I really want to get a overdrive/distortion pedal. My dream pedal is the BD-2, but I’m not sure how it would work with the MG30. I used to have a 15 watt MG with the eight inch speaker. Sounded like crap. The FX were pretty lousy and scratchy on it, too. Maybe the bigger speaker is better in the MG30.

hi guys help me out with this i have the mg30fx too but one think i noticed is that every time it switches channels. the vol. changes (lessens when u go to clean) and if u go from clean to od1/od2, you need to turn around the vol. knob a little and the volume sort of "activates". It increases while on the same setting it was. aside from all that will i get a volume increase with a ds1 pedal in clean channel? will that sound increase even more if i switch to the od1 channel? pls help me out i need a pedal but im not buying it cuz of this

I have this Marshall and for me is pretty Good but I believe the Best way to use this Marshall with pedals Is in clean mode because with crunch, overdrive 1 and 2 plus pedals Is kind of noisy and it make so much noise I dont know If someone use un other way but thats how I prefer with my boss pedals, any suggestions would be appreciated

Yep, it means it handles pedals great. Most amps like this sound no-where near as good as this one unless its a tube amplifier.

I haven't tried the newest MGs, but I think I've had the misfortune of playing every other version of them. They are all awful. At first they surprise you with their alright sounds at low volume. Until you turn them up (rehearsal or gigging volume) and man they do sound HARSH.

The *perceived* difference in volume between a valve amp and solid-state amp is due to two things: 1) The extra harmonics present in the sound of a valve amp when overdriven. 2) The use of better quality (louder) speakers (higher sensitivity dB/W) by manufacturers in their line of valve amps. Therefore, I believe this popular argument concerning "valve watts" vs "solid-state watts" is not quite correct (a watt is a watt).

I have more amps than guitars...but I only have 4 guitars. I do have a little Mustang 20 just to see what all the fuss was about with modeling amps. IMHO, way over rated for much besides using it with a computer/recording setup.

I had the previous carbon fiber one and it was a great amp until it stopped working. These are highly unreliable amps, imo.

I had one of the originals,didn’t want a pedal board. Worst amp ever played through.Could not for the life of me dial a tone with my fender Strat.Overdrive awful.

The drive tones on this amp aren't great but the clean channel is glorius :)

@@intheblues Agreed. And the Orange RT-35 is also a good pedal platform and only has reverb on it.

Fender Champion 30 watt has glorious clean channel also.

@@johncollins5552 I had one and hated it because for whatever reason, all my pedals sounded insanely trebly. I had a shin ei companion clone that was not usable with it. Something HAD to be wrong with it.
