Many songs were written only by Daryl & others with John. When John introduced Sarah to Daryl in mid 70's, she began writing with them & eventually brought her sister Jana on. The girls co-wrote many of their biggest hits with them. Daryl dated Sarah for almost 30 years, & Jana passed from leukemia in 1993 at the age of 36.

"Say It Isn't So" was the 12th Top 10 charted Hall & Oates single on Billboard's Hot 100, peaking @ #2 for 4 weeks in 1983. [It was blocked from achieving #1 Pop by "Say, Say, Say" the duet by Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson which held #1 for 6 weeks]. Between 1974 - 2005, H&O charted 34 singles on the Hot 100 featuring 16 Top 10s including 6 #1 singles. "Say It Isn't So" peaked @ #45 on the R&B/Soul chart (H&O, as a blue-eyed soul crossover act, charted 21 times on the Soul chart usually in lower chart positions than the Pop chart but they did get a #1 Soul for "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)" (1981). "SIIS" was #1 on the Dance chart for 4 weeks in early 1984.

Daryl explained that this feeling was the impetus for the song. "The idea was that John and I were outside of things," he said. "You know, that line, "We like to be the strangers at the party, two rebels in a shell," that had a lot to do with John and I's relationship to the world. And I think that was coming out of a combination of people's perceptions of us at that time - we were getting a lot of flack from various things. And being on the road, and feeling sort of separate from the outside world - because we were sort of in this 'road bubble,' and also the bubble of our success."

I've never actually been able to get a true take on where this song lies in the music spectrum. To me, Hall & Oates were kind of a hybrid band that could play almost any style of music as music constantly changed. They adapted to changing music styles about as good as many did. I think it played a great part in their longevity on the charts that others often struggled with after a few albums. To me this song kind of mixes a lot of styles that were popular and becoming popular at the time. R&b, funk, jazz, with echoes of hip hop.

"Everytime You Go Away", with powerful lead vocals by Hall, who wrote it. British singer Paul Young had a Billboard Number 1 hit with a cover of the song in 1985. Though the Hall and Oates original (recorded in a Memphis-soul style) was never released as a single, it remains a fan favorite on the duo's greatest hits albums, and was featured on their Apollo Theater album in 1985, and is frequently featured in their live set to this day.

My favorite Hall & Oates song! I would categorize this song as Pop Rock with some R&B influence. React to their songs Private Eyes, Kiss On My List, Method Of Modern Love, Family Man and One On One please.

One of my all time faves by Hall & Oates. I even love listening to the karaoke version with just the music when going for a walk through the park. Walking to the beat. Thanks for sharing. Blessings to you guys !!

Daryl Hall says his music has a Philly sound to it as in Philadelphia. I saw him perform at a small town bar in Minnesota in 97. The music just pours out of him he's amazing his voice is incredible. Hall & Oates were both in the bar John Oates was playing foosball and Daryl Hall sat next to me at the bar and had a Roman Coke what a fun night. Only a thousand people showed up they were hoping for 10000. It was a cold rainy day but it was the same performance he gives for a big crowd.

Hall and Oates were do hot during the 80s that when they issued a greatest hits album during the interim between two albums they tacked on two songs to it Say It Isn't So and Adult Education, both went top ten. Straight fire 🔥

Omg, thank you guys for doing this one, few people have reacted to it...it's my absolute favorite H&O song. I first heard it when it first came out, I was 7 years old and loved it ever since. Btw, that video is the long version of the song...the radio cut is much shorter. Another great one from them that hasn't been highlighted much is Wait For Me.

You guys really need to check out Daryl's House. Almost all episodes are available on KZfaq, I think. Daryl invites famous musicians to his home to jam in his private studio. Everyone from Smokey Robinson to Kenny Loggins to CeeLo Green. There are some INCREDIBLE performances.
