In this clip from episode 5 of It Was the Music, Larry shows how he used his turntable to teach himself how to play the guitar.
It Was the Music is a musical odyssey about two musicians, who, in search of what they call “music utopia”, step into the limelight to make it on their own. “It Was the Music” features Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams, who step off the tour bus, pack their instruments and thirty-year marriage into an SUV, and set out across America. They look to fulfill their dream of playing their songs and riveting interpretations of American Gospel, Blues, Country and good old rock ‘n’ roll. He’s from New York’s Upper East Side, she’s from rural West Tennessee. A love story that also looks back to the music that brought people together in the halcyon days of the sixties and early seventies, the series features a score of great musicians and speaks to the power of music to bring people together.

The music Larry Campbell made with Bob Dylan, Charlie Sexton, Donnie Herron, Tony Gagne and Winston Watson, et al, plus GE Smith ranks among my favorites in a lifetime of seeing the greatest Singer/songwriter composer and arranger ever.

I'm from a similar generation to Larry and a professional musician too. This was all we had to learn from then; records and tapes! As you can see, we WORKED to get those notes!

Met him in 2002 in Las Vegas, at The Joint. He was meandering through the casino and walked right up to me and asked me if I had change for a twenty, which I did. He asked what I was up to and I said I was seeing Dylan play, flew all the way from Atlanta. He said, what do you think of his band and I said, mind you - I didn’t know who I was talking to as people always look different in person, so I said that they were amazing and yadda yadda. He was so kind, introduced himself, shook his hand and when they were up on stage he saw me in the crowd and pointed during a song and mouthed “CHAD”

That’s how I learned to in the mid ‘60’s. I wore those damn records out playing them over and over. Learned everything by ear those first few years. Wouldn’t have changed a thing.
