Football's Greatest With Jeff Stelling

Football's Greatest With Jeff Stelling

Күн бұрын

Sir Geoff Hurst is with Jeff Stelling on the pod this week to talk about his greatest England matches.
They cover the 1966 World Cup, including the feisty win over Argentina, how he discovered he was playing ahead of Jimmy Greaves in the final, scoring the hat-trick against West Germany that made him a legend and which team-mate ended up in someone’s garden on the night they celebrated England’s men’s greatest ever success on a football field.
He also discusses what he believes is the worst decision ever in international football (no, not that one), why VAR makes him angry, almost joining Manchester United, walking football with Harry Kane and whether he thinks the current England side will win something in the coming years.
Football's Greatest is a Folding Pocket production with BBC Studios.

Fully agree with Hursty that VAR is really really bad for the game of football! Hate it, hate it, hate it! Yes, some critical goals have been given thanks to VAR, but the stoppages disrupting the flow of the game are NOT worth it!

Geoff will always be a special man as he helped me recover after a burst appendix operation when I was 9 years old… I was very poorly ( touch and go apparently ) my dad read that he was coming to my home town to open a sports shop. He wrote to the shop and Geoff dropped off a personally signed picture and left it at the hospital reception ( as he had to get back to London ). Imagine my reaction to receive this act of kindness….My mood changed, I recovered and finally got to thank Geoff personally at his theatre event when he did a sports evening at Cheltenham Town Hall. An incredible, humble man who is always so modest when talking about his career.

Problem England had with Greaves is the bulk of his goals came in friendlies. Twenty-seven goals in friendlies, 13 goals in Home Championships and only four goals in European and World Cup qualifiers and finals (WC62-66; Euro64) and three of those were against Luxembourg in WC62 qualifiers.

Absolutely nauseating, the cheats of 66, still desperately hanging on, thank goodness for the redemption of the lampard “goal”, and then there’s the yobs, West Ham yobs in 64, yobs in 66 and yobs in 2021, and the drunken English yobs in Spain every year, hiding under a Uk flag, then the cry babies to get rattin sent off, and Charltons toe-poke, they can only win at home cause they can’t travel.
