The ketchup conversation is blatantly having a dig at Ben Foster lol. Yes ketchup isn't that big of a deal but how he handled Foster's wife going into labour tells you all you need to know about him.

Yeah exactly, the guy sounds like a right knobhead. If one of your players comes up and says 'my wife is in labour'... why on earth WOULDN'T you say 'okay get yourself there right away, good luck I hope it all goes well and take as much time as you need, don't worry about being back for the next game as it's only a friendly' I couldn't really believe that story if Foster was being truthful and accurate with it. If it was accurate you can tell why the players would hate him...

As a Juventus fan who remembers the Capello era very well and has also followed England closely for 16 years, I think I'm in a good position to judge what went wrong: Whilst I completely agree, pretty much every player at that World Cup was absolute garbage (with the arguable exception of Gerrard), Fabio wasn't blameless. Yes, he's mostly played 4-4-2, but that doesn't mean he can't adapt slightly to his players (Ancelotti did for example, when he worked with Zidane). When Capello was at Juve, the 4-4-2 worked fine against Milan (I'm using them as an example because they fielded a midfield diamond, with an unbelievable CAM, the thing England struggled with the most against Germany), because the two CM's were proper holding midfielders, four of his back five were world-class and even the wingers were workhorses. 1. England had one holding midfielder and Barry actually spent the 09/10 season playing in a 4-4-2, but next to de Jong, ie he was more attacking. As for Lampard, I think everyone knows that he's never prospered in that position, neither going forward, nor defensively. Besides look at Germany's next game (4-0 against Argentina). Argentina had Mascherano as a DM, but due to Maradona's laughable midfield structure, even he couldn't cope with the German onslaught. What's also worth noting here is that, unlike England, Argentina had a CAM (Messi btw) which meant that Schweinsteiger and Khedira played more catiously. 2. Their best player was playing on the left. When he's played there for Liverpool, the two in the middle were Alonso and Mascherano, players who "sit" a lot more and crucially are far more comfortable in those roles than Lampard ever was and clearly better players than Barry. Obviously, it's easy being smart in hindsight and he can't be blamed for his team (pretty much everyone, but in particular the 5 world-class players) underperforming and he was also unlucky with Rio's injury and that Rooney, who'd had the season of his life until March, wasn't fit either. But he didn't help himself with the lineups (particularly against Germany, but it's not like England were any better in the previous games), nor by leaving Walcott out of the squad for Lennon/SWP... Respect if you actually read through this, sorry for the amount of text😂

@@DR-uq4hn, No problem, look i understand if it's in the league that a manager can motivate the players on a week to week basis but even then it's down to the players on the pitch to perform and believe. On the international stage it's even harder for the manager to motivate the team in such a limited time frame of a tournament. It has to be down to players to give their all and have the intelligence to read the game and sometimes have to change things if it isn't working. It's just a cheap escape route for players who are under performing!!

Correct - Germany were faster, fitter and worked much harder than we did.... Capello is a great manager and needed to bring discipline to England... Personally I think our “golden Generation” is much overhyped ... David James was the England number 1 and was far from a world class Goalkeeper ... Wes brown and Glen Johnson were our right back options and neither were world class... Hargreaves, Barry and Carrick were always injured and we didn’t have a strike partnership up front... The FA interfered with selection which is ultimately why he left the job... I’m pretty much certain that Capellos first choice 11 would have been as follows 4-2-3-1 James Johnson Terry (C) Ferdinand Cole Carrick Barry Gerrard (RF) Rooney (10) Heskey (LF) Crouch (CF) This to me fits his style of play for both Milan and Roma... he always had two 6s to allow the fullbacks to drive forward so the wide attackers could invert into the box...

Reasons for failures. 1) One vital player always being unfit going into the tournament; 2) Regardless of Carragher's comments, we were overrun in central midfield because we played 4-4-2 and international football is all about possession, esp given the heat; 3) The players were tired and far below the level they showed during normal the season; 4) Big players not stepping up the way they did week after week for their clubs. I think Capello probably was past his sell-by date by the time he was managing England given how fast football evolved tactically from his hay day to the 2010 World Cup. Yes he should've adapted quicker but that's been a failing of so many great managers - some would say Mourinho and Ancelotti are finding the same thing now. But that doesn't change the fact Capello was a vastly experienced manager at the highest level and capable of pulling something off. Especially at an international tournament where managers are generally older anyway and the tactical level is nowhere near club football where they get more time to work with players. E.g. Deschamps won the World Cup. Capello's English was poor which obviously doesn't help at all, but the England National Team had far bigger structural, cultural and tactical issues than Capello and his quirks. Winning a tournament during that era was a huge ask. The argument about him being too stern for the players is just totally irrelevant - it's up to players who consider themselves professionals to adapt to the management style of their coaches and get on with it. Would've liked to see Capello manage England at Euro 2012 but we'll never know now.

I really like carraghers insight here he is spot on - For me Germany were faster, fitter and worked much harder than we did.... Capello is a great manager and needed to bring discipline to England... Personally I think our “golden Generation” is much overhyped ... David James was the England number 1 and was far from a world class Goalkeeper which is why he considered using green as the first choice ... Wes brown and Glen Johnson were our right back options and neither were world class... Hargreaves, Barry and Carrick were always injured and we didn’t have a strike partnership up front... The FA interfered with selection which is ultimately why he left the job... I’m pretty much certain that Capellos first choice 11 would have been as follows 4-2-3-1 Green Johnson Terry (C) Ferdinand Cole Carrick Barry Gerrard (RF) Rooney (10) Heskey (LF) Crouch (CF) This to me fits his style of play for both Milan and Roma... he always had two 6s to allow the fullbacks to drive forward so the wide attackers could invert into the box... and for me we did have the players to suit that system ...

Well done Carragher! I'm going to go a step further! The England players were not good enough! One of Gerrads best seasons under Hullier was on the right of midfield! Ultimately, the likes of Brazil, Germany, Italy and France had better all round players that were adaptable and knew how to manage games! They were technically better on a skill level which has been a massive handicap with the past English/British players! When you look at the Golden generation, the so called prem greatest midfielders were nearly all the same! If you breakdown Scholes, Gerrard, Lampard, Paul Ince, Carrick etc they all are near enough the same. One might be stronger or quicker, taller etc but they all are very similar in what they could do with the ball. Problem is none of them were comfortable in tight situations and the other top national teams knew it. England would try to play a unrealistic paced football for 90 minutes and if that failed to effect the opponent most times it was game over! Teams like Brazil, Italy and France could control the tempo and dictate England to their benefit. England had the likes of Joe Cole, Matt Litissier, etc that never really got a look in. These players that could handle pressure in tight pockets! Only Gascoigne got the chance and he literally carried all the nations expectations! So why people think that England should of won a trophy I don't know! Greece won like how Leicester done because they probably had no egos and stuck to the game plan. Also, they had no expectations! England expect so much from their players, but fail to realise that in most of the premier league teams it's the Foreign players that are the best! They actually elevate the British/ English players and more to our detriment make the players look better than what they are. Hence when it's time to put on the national shirt, their deficiencies come to light! Hopefully with the likes of Sancho who has that ability to handle the ball in tight pockets with skill may give us a better chance! We need most the team to be like this to stand a chance! I remember watching Liverpool against Real Madrid in the CL final and watching Marcelo do things on the ball that some British/England players in the prem can't do! He is a Left-back/ wing-back.

Well said. I think the presence of Klopp and Pep in the EPL will help developing Sterling, Trent, Foden and other players. Playing team off the park and tirelessly running around doesn't work anymore. Players need to develop more awareness, creativity and skill, not run around aimlessly. If there is game control, structure and a good system, they'll get further next time. You're right, so many squad players are very similar, one of the tournaments Glenn Hoddle took Shearer, Fowler, Les Ferdinand & Teddy Sheringham. The first 3 being very similar. Ian Wright wasn't chosen even though he could bring something different off the bench as an impact sub when they used to have the "golden goal". The system is important and having a diversity of players gives you more options.

How did Crouch get more time than Fowler, Collymore, Cole even Defoe! Crouch is not rubbish and his height was a problem but would you see any other top nation with a player like that! Not copying other international teams but there will be some similarities! Sometimes we get caught up in all this work rate business! So what the Brazilian teams of past did not run their socks off! You make some excellent points !

@@marloncampbell4708 Some teams are not playing with 2 strikers now. Most play with 1 up top and 2 wingers or with a false 9 who drops back. During friendlies they have to try formations like 3-5-2, 3-4-3 (2 wingers, 1 up top) or other variations. Conte used similar with Chelsea and won the title in 2017. In the EPL, teams Pep and Klopp are focusing on creating space, pressing and controlling the typo of the game through quick passing. It's also important to have more players go on loan or go abroad to be in new enviroments and to get more game time. Sitting on the bench at Liverpool, United, Chelsea, Arsenal or City won't help these youngsters. They need to develop and gain confidence by actually playing.

My only other gripe is, apart from the Leicester manager, you're naming foreign managers to rescue the English/British players! This is mind boggling seeing that most the top managers at the best clubs are foreign!

Glen Hoddle played 3 at the back with 2 wing backs in France '98. Some times other teams play better or are more organised on the night. The system is important, but the players have to be high quality, creative and intelligent. They must be willing fit into a system, even if they are dropped or rotated, and they must leave their egos at home. Also, some of the teams have featured players with the exact same attributes, apparently because they are undroppable. In WC '98 he took 3 number 9s. Many high quality players from other countries don't get chosen at all because they don't fit the system or they are surplus of requirements.
