Maldives ground water is worst brakish. They have rain water harvesting in every house. Sintex tanks in all houses. We can drink it. If you are worried then we have to buy bottle water from their stoc. Average 100$ a month for water. For bathing ground water smells horrible to counter it they have O2 plant installed in houses. 2 yrs I lived there both in south end & north. Same everywhere

Actually you didn't see other side of maafushi island... Especially arena hotel side... That's actually perfect tourist place... You could see more shops for water activities... Unfortunately you stayed in wrong side of island that's the reason the room was very cheap.. I would say you really missed the actual vibe of maafushi... Sad for you..
